I agree completely. They've actually been using Daryl and Negan in order to replace Rick but they have done a bad job. (Mostly because of the writters).
I personally think Carol has a worse case of becoming overrated. Don't get me wrong timid abused house wife to hardened survivor is a fantastic story arc and carol up until the wolves attacking Alexandria was a fantastic story/writing. But making her basically invincible, bamboozling entire groups of saviors, acting dumb during the whispers arc and living, and onward her story was pretty bad. I think she became overrated because she wasnt like Michonne who stayed on constant fighting shape, trained, etc. she was mostly sitting around from Alexandria onwards except for moments of action where she was magically some Houdini in combat every encounter. I like the wolf in sheeps clothing depiction, but it cant be overused, and with carol (including the newest spinoff) its incredibly overused
Daryl for me always worked best as Rick's right hand man, the guy that was always there when needed and everyone could count on, and that's what made him great and likeable. He's not leader or protagonist material, so him taking up the role of leadership after Rick's disappearance never really sat right. I just cannot grasp the same feeling with him as the protagonist as I did with Rick, who was a natural leader. Daryl used to be my favourite from season 3 - 5, when I think the character was at his peak, but right now with his spinoff especially, I just don't find him that interesting anymore. I've seen everything he has to offer at this point that it's starting to become repetitive and predictable. Same can be said with Carol tbh, we've seen everything from her too. I feel this is what happens when AMC just milks the hell out of this franchise with these super old characters especially. There's nothing new to see anymore.
I think Daryl being a TV character really showed after the first few seasons. It felt like they really didn't know what to do with him. I'm a fan of him, and I think he's cool, but they should've put him into some stickier situations and had him get seriously injured a few times like Rick did to at least give the illusion that he didn't have crazy plot armor. Definitely a bit overrated, though.
Also a lot of rick's right hands from the comics don't have nearly enough to do. Tyreese in the show was a good character but in the comic he was top tier. Daryl is also a better version of Dwight basically, so he gets especially shafted with daryl around.
People always say that Rick is the one who has more plot amor, however, if we think about it... it's definitely Daryl. They have been putting him as the invincible guy who never does wrong and saves and never lose, when objectively speaking, that's impossible.
I'm a Georgia I see racism everyday Darrell's transition in to what I call a human being was one of the best things about walking dead People coming together for a common cause Survival...
Insanely good video Theo. You have it exactly right. Rick is a much more complex character in comparison to Daryl. Rick needs people in his life, for his life to continue. He is emotionally vulnerable without them, whereas Daryl doesn't... in that he is a loner who has demonstrated time and again that he finds it hard to settle comfortably among other people for long. He doesn't really have a sense of place. Rick is all about community and society given he was a Sheriff, which gives him a natural instinct of being responsible for others and establishing safe communities. Daryl, is much simpler, he has a disconnect with people and finds it harder to become settled for long due in part to his childhood formative years. Thus this unfortunately for the character doesn't make him lead character material very easily as the writing dimensions are not as broad. So yes, although I love Daryl who is a complexity in his own right but i feel just need his back story fleshed out a lot more (would be great to see how he grew up and his experiences in a separate show) I do think that the character is somewhat overrated. A phenomenal side character that it is difficult to write a whole show around as a lead because of his emotional limitations.
@@nicoleme1457 wow what a comment! Summed it up perfectly and your right i would love to see Daryl’s backstory more fleshed out hopefully in Daryl Dixon season 3!

I actually completely agree with this. Daryl's a right hand man, not a leader. Rick carried TWD. So I wouldnt say he's overrated, hes a great character. But all the characters get overrated when they turn into a special forces zombie and corrupt organization slaying team, doing ridiculous shit. What made the show good was they were everyday people, with regular builds and creeds, surviving. Being ''believably'' good. Which was basically up to season 5-6
I do think Daryl is a cool character, but that’s it, cool. He’s a great sideman for rick and he definitely started taking some more responsibility later on in the show, but i have numerous other characters i like more. From being the scared priest who locked people out of the church, to becoming a bit of an antagonist to rick and the group, to then manning up, becoming a leader himself, finding his faith again in a world that’s ended, and then finally being able to open the gate for people at the commonwealth. He just had a fantastic arc in my eyes and it was all performed excellently. I really like Aaron too, and really think he should have had more of a lead over Daryl, since he was the one going outside Alexandria and looking for people, and especially finding our group. He had more urgency than Daryl and he was just an all round caring person of the community. The show had some fumbles, but in the end it is an incredible show and i love the cast of characters a lot!
I have seen a similar video from predatoure a few years ago about this exact situation, and i believe the show was like in S8 back then, i don't think he's ovverated, i mean the man has his own spin off, but i admit the memes with him grunting and barely speaking are really funny, even tho it doesn't really apply to current day, great video!
Early Daryl was great but then the fandom liked him too much and the show stopped evolving him to avoid changing him from what the fans liked. His plot armour doesn’t help either. And I say this as someone who considers him my favourite TWD character.
AS a hardcore Daryl andddd Norman reedus fan, absolutely 10000% gotta agree with everything in the video. I think u might actually underestimate how level headed Daryl fans are, I think we alllllllll, as much as we love Daryl, all agree and feel he’s way way both overused in later seasons, yet still under utilised. Daryl is a loyal natural soldier sidekick, a guard dog. And that’s where he absolutely thrives in a pack his loyalty and opinion is respected and appreciated in. He was NEVERRRR meant to become a full on pack leader, it’s not his way. Even this lone wolf way coming back to him decades later AFTER learning multiple times that he finally knows his favourite place to be is a loyal respected, well treated guard dog despite his rugged looks. Even in the lone Daryl Dixon series, despite him being one of my favourite characters ever, and Norman reedus being my favourite celebrity ((and absolute fuckin HANDSOMEEEEE ageing goals bruh my GOD to age like Norman 😫😫)), *i* couldn’t get into it. It’s just not him anymore, nothing he does anymore ever feels like a natural route he would take. Everything feels like Daryl HIMSELF, is somehow being paid to an actor now 😭😭, and they’re trying to milk every ounce of fandom love he’s got left, to the point Daryl is now a sapped out exoskeleton of who he was. Genuinely such, such a shame, and these writing decisions do nothing but now drag Daryl along like a forced, once great, well trained and self disciplined dog, now chained and whipped for others greedy amusement. The slow never dying poison grave of never being allowed to rest, a lot of TWD characters are now subjected and cursed to
Darly is such a good character but he wasn’t made to lead a massive group like in the main show but i think it works better for him in his own show becouse he doesn’t lead a massive group he just is just focused on keeping a few people around him alive and he does show them that he cares he doesn’t try and hide it as much as he always does i think it just works better for his character
I don't think that darly being the main character is the problem but ı think the moments that he and other people used to be in were a lot more realistic. Like in s2 sophia getting lost, darly looking for sophia, shane and otis looking for medical suplies, shane killing otis, the whole gang figthing with walkers at the final... moments like this were full of action, great writing and even better acting.Moments like this were a lot more realistic than the ınes in s10 or s11 but the two main problems in my opinion are plot armor and realism.I mean writers cant let the main character die in a realistic but boring way so they make them lucky af season season 6 finale with negan killing abraham and glenn was sad but still one of the most popular scenes of the show because it reminded people how dangerous the apocalypse realy is.personaly instead of questioning the character we should be questioning the writers
Daryl was the reason I started watching the show and he's still my fav character simply because I tend to always love that stereotype of characters who seem to be stoic and uncaring but are really sweethearts if they care abt someone. And that's fine, for me. I loved his arc through the first seasons but my problem is, just as you said, that his character didn't develop further and just staid being that sterotype. I liked the first episoed after Ricks death where they showed how Daryl became the next leader, because it kinda makes sence. He was Ricks right hand man after all. He had a different style of leading then Rick, more through actions then connecting with the people they are leading. Hope it's understandable what I mean. And that fit perfectly. The problem for me is though that they didn't really explore anything further than that and again stagnated his character in the story at the point he was in the episodes after Ricks death.
I think they should have showed his growth instead of falling back to the same formula with his character. So he could bounce off other characters better once he became a more of a main character. Plus, giving Daryl better stories, simply put they needed to give Norman Reedus better material for Daryl.
It's clear and it shows they could have done that, but the producers and writers just kept things the way they are instead. But I hope going forward that's something they consider if all the current spin-off shows eventually comes together and evolve into a season 12 or some kind of sequel continuation series. With returning old characters and the new ones.
I think Daryl works as a side character, but not a lead. He’s just not lead material. I would say the same for Carol. IMO, AMC needs to either do the next generation of kids - Judith, Hershel, RJ, Gracie, Coco - or let the universe die. TOWL was perfect! A great ending for Richonne and the overall show, IMO. I was fine when the show ended in S11 b/c I thought it had run its course. TOWL was the only necessary spin-off. It’s done so AMC needs to move on. Can’t keep milking the same material.
Daryl was my favourite character in the first four seasons because he had some good character writing but later he just does nothing really and is kind of always there but his character doesn't actually change in any way
I agree with all of the points made in the video. He’s a better deuteragonist than the main protagonist. Obviously Rick had to leave so literally nothing could be done about that but maybe if they kept Morgan then the both of them could carry the show, or better yet don’t kill Carl and allow Daryl to be a sort of placeholder until Carl can grow into a leader. Daryl can’t carry the show and it was shown in s11 when other characters were outshining him in his own show by this point. Gabriel was more important in s11 than Daryl so I think that says it all. Good character but very overrated and also quite poorly written at times.
Daryl and Merle were the best additions and changes to TWD that a person could come up with. It was excellently executed and deeply meaningful. Everyone knows this and no-one disagrees. But in good television fashion, they have abused and taken it to an extreme. You can't have a dish made entirely out of garlic (as amazing as it is the first dozen times!) and eat it for years. You need to balance the flavour. The first season of the Daryl Dixon show, I thought was great. it was beautiful and filmed well. And I like Carol too. But that second season.. let's say it really needed some work. It was like they hired the people who f--ked up the last season of Game Of Thrones
I just think it boils down to shitty writing honestly in my personal opinion they should have just stopped a long time ago for the walking dead as a whole.
To answer your question: yeah...he kinda is overrated. And I say this as someone who was a fan of Daryl before most people(Im talking Season1). My favorite version of Daryl was seasons 2-3. After that they just kind of stopped developing him(and made him bullet proof. Probably at least in part due to being scared of fans reactions) I liked that they gave him a bit more to do after Rick left and in the first season of Daryl Dixon, but not quite enough......
i absolutely love daryl but i wish he died in season 7 as another death in the "shocking moment" with glenn and abraham after season 7 i was insanely bored of daryl yet i loved his character.
also it wouldve made more sense for him to die at the start of season 7 because he tried to stop negan from killing maggie (i think it was maggie) it wouldve made more sense.
Daryl has been the same character for too long. They fumbled the Daryl spinoff putting him in another country. They should have just had Daryl go try and find Rick and got lost and went on his own journey. I wanna see Daryl with shorter hair again and him being more like season 1 and 2 where Daryl was a bit of a prick that’s what made Daryl so much better.
I just miss when we did not know who was about to die an it was on the edge of our seats events when ppl was on screen in a dangerous situation. Not one time watching the show have I thought Daryl was about to die an it made it kinda boring to see him in life threatening events. He was never a favorite but after the “if daryl dies we riot” crowd became to much I kinda found him to be a bit to edgy an at times it was difficult to watch in the later seasons. Also he got Glenn killed!
Daryl is my favorite character, I haven't related to a character like I did with him and I think his character arcs and development are actually overlooked, he's a great written character. But you do make some good points about some of his writing and his role as the main character.
Thank you very much for hearing me out. And don’t get me wrong I totally understand the Daryl hype and thinks he’s more grounded and relatable than Rick
Don't know if anyone has commented this but he was great from seasons 1-5 but after that I feel his personality changed just based off the plot of the episode. He had a great character but then all the dumb people were like "if you kill daryl, we riot" I know for a fact the writers knew they couldn't kill him off which means bs plot armor all the time, overuse, and finally being pushed to the front of the screen even if sometimes his story at the time doesn't need to be upfront with other better stories for others.
Thanks again for having me on man! Love the content🔥

Early Daryl was great but then the fandom liked him too much and the show stopped evolving him to avoid changing him from what the fans liked. His plot armour doesn’t help either. And I say this as someone who considers him my favourite TWD character.
I feel like a good ending for Daryl would’ve been to die in the lineup a tragic end like ricks right hand man in the comics Tyrese
Bro said “ I need them to spell it out for me instead of just watching the show and getting Daryl’s story from the stories exposition “
No not at all I dont understand how you’ve even come to that conclusion 😭😭😭
The slow never dying poison grave of never being allowed to rest, a lot of TWD characters are now subjected and cursed to
And no one blames him for Glenn’s death. He is flawed like every human..I like Daryl but he is overrated .
I agree but i did mention Norman is held back by his material hence me blaming the writers not the character
@theohuntt oh my bad bro ı forgot about that part
Daryl is The Walking Dead.
The character of Daryl can't lead a show but he's the perfect A-2 to the shows A-1
Well said!
I liked him in Season 1-5.
Daryl and Carol solos literally light work no one can compare
I think they should have showed his growth instead of falling back to the same formula with his character.
So he could bounce off other characters better once he became a more of a main character. Plus, giving Daryl better stories, simply put they needed to give Norman Reedus better material for Daryl.
@@abyssloved yeah that would have made the transition to post Andrew Lincoln era of TWD so much better if Daryl’s character actually evolved
Hahahah lol
Daryl embodies the American spirit.
Probably at least in part due to being scared of fans reactions)
I liked that they gave him a bit more to do after Rick left and in the first season of Daryl Dixon, but not quite enough......
his show is mid asf so yep
The plot armour in the show is genuinely insane 😭😭😭
@@theohuntt XD
Less captain gold more Jerry please lol.
i absolutely love daryl but i wish he died in season 7 as another death in the "shocking moment" with glenn and abraham after season 7 i was insanely bored of daryl yet i loved his character.
also it wouldve made more sense for him to die at the start of season 7 because he tried to stop negan from killing maggie (i think it was maggie) it wouldve made more sense.
Daryl has been the same character for too long. They fumbled the Daryl spinoff putting him in another country. They should have just had Daryl go try and find Rick and got lost and went on his own journey. I wanna see Daryl with shorter hair again and him being more like season 1 and 2 where Daryl was a bit of a prick that’s what made Daryl so much better.
i wouldnt say darnell is overated hes an acceptable stand in for rickydickydodahgrimes but we would rather have rickydickeydodahgrimes
some context to this i stopped watching after murrell diesd
UNDERRATED
Ngl i thought this was a new episode of twds hot takes
Hahahaha sorry new episode of that out soon I hope you still enjoyed the video though!
@@theohuntt really hope my comment is in the next video
He peaked in season 4 and has been quite dull ever since
Yeah Daryl’s peak was defo S2-S5
Yes definitely
I almost didn’t watch this🤣
I just miss when we did not know who was about to die an it was on the edge of our seats events when ppl was on screen in a dangerous situation.
Jerry rocks, but he gave me diarrhea chicken big Mac LOL.
no since he became the MC
Yes he has
Daryl's a virg... Lol
Very f'n overrated
He hasn't become overrated, HE'S ALWAYS BEEN OVERRATED.
@@MLink7 very bold take my friend
I need to stop watching these videos. I just got the TWD box set and I didn't know Rick died in the comics. Thanks a lot.
Sorry but that issue of the comic came out over 6 years ago now so you’ve had plenty of time to read it lol
Gonna watch this still but the answer is no
Is your answer still no?
Whole series is, its now a milk-cow
Let’s agree to disagree on that one
Yesss my friend has one and I using it and the bolt is so hsrd to pin I fort no shore he did this right
Don't know if anyone has commented this but he was great from seasons 1-5 but after that I feel his personality changed just based off the plot of the episode.
