@@rockugotcha by serious, I mean actually naming movies they like. Sometimes a celebrity will plug the movies that they have coming up, or name movies that they just worked on
I noticed that. Hanks is a few years older than me. He likely started watching movies before I did. The term motion picture was still used when 10 year old Hanks got into watching movies 😀By the time I got into watching movies my friends and family weren't talking about motion pictures they were talking about movies.
Love this. And also... I probably should have been able to predict that his favorites would include a classic about space, a classic about WW2, and a classic about '60s rock and roll.
I wonder if it always was? He was a little young to have seen that upon release, but I'd like to ask him what year or age he discovered the film's heart.
"2001: a space odyssey" is one of my favourite movies too, really just a classic. I have not seen the second movie and the fourth movie, but I always forget how fun "a hard days night" is. It really is just an enjoyable film to watch.
How old were you realized it was a favorite? How many watchings into it did the film become a favorite? I saw it within a few months of release, primarily because I didn't give a flip about Dustin Hoffman, and Jon Voight was too new for me to connect to his other films. (His rural teacher in CONRACK was my first liked-film between he and I.) Those early ''70s had appeals from HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER and a few others, and in a few years, when MIDNIGHT was back in town, I finally 'got it'. I wouldn't list it among favorites but it turns out to be more important that good-or-bad.
I still agree with his Oscar speech listing JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS. BEST YEARS, though... that opening drive and arriving at Homer's house. I may never stop a blubber when seeing the one moment when his mother looks down at his hooks, for the first time, spins and blubbers, thinking "What have they done to my baby boy?!!" Fortunately, the tears flow moments later as Myrna Loy yells repeatedly for the kids to tell her who was at the door. No answer. And finally she leans out and we all see her. And that whole sequence could be done in every era with a war and a peace afterwards. The return of the soldiers, in whole or in part. Of course, my favorite battle scene remains the beach awakening and battle against Telos.
2001 and The Best Year Of Our Lives. Perfect choices for a top 4, oh man!!! I would put Rear Window, The Pianist, The Best Year of Our Lives and 12 Angry Men(or Vertigo, so hard to choose).
Midnight Cowboy is the film I go to twice a year. It’s just that movie that takes me to a place where I’m immersed in something other than the monotony of my own life. Heh…
Might need to give 2001 space Odyssey another ago i thought it was good I've never understood why people rave about it as one of the best movies ever. On another very interesting selection by Tom love hearing the his passion for films instead of just naming 4 film's told us why they mean so much to him could of kept talking for another hour and i would of listened.
You got to give 2001 A Space Odyssey another go. Now the term AI is uttered by politicians and other known quantities. That movie portrayed AI long before the term AI became a hot topic!
2001 is a work of cinematic art-more like a poem (which is minimalist, and suggests ideas and leaves space for reflection) than a novel which is how most films are. Also, it does make a difference to see this as it was intended -on the large screen - where the audience is immersed and enveloped by environments out of the ordinary.
🎉🎉🎉You ARE! 🎉🎉🎉 I'm the lead editor of the Letterbox team, and on behalf of everyone here, I wanna sincerely congratulate you for being such an insufferable goon to think anyone cares that you posted your stupid little opinion before everyone else!
Is it just me or does Tom Hanks look kinda sick here? As in extra skinny and much older-looking than 66? Maybe it's normal aging but I was kinda shocked by his appearance here.
Still holds up pretty well. If you had seen it as a 12-year old in 1968, as Hanks did, that stays with you forever. It blew everybody away in that time.
The Best Years of Our Lives is a great film with the great actor Fredrick March and another role performed by a non-actor who lost his arms in the war, but I do not agree with Hanks that it is timeless as 99% of the military I have encountered in West Virginia are FAR right-wing extremists who cheat and abuse their spouses and then get law enforcement jobs (they should NEVER have been hired for as they abuse the Hell out of their authority whether they work as local police or the FBI). I play Hard Days Night over and over for my disabled parent, but I have watched it only once myself (I prefer later Beatles).
Here are some real sets of four great movies across time and space, mofos. Set A: Morbius Jurassic World Dominion Star Wars the Rise of Skywalker The Tourist Set B: Pretty Woman Death Wish remake by Eli Roth Saltburn Tenet Set C: Alien Covenant Terminator Genesis The Social Network The Aviator Set D: Starship Troopers Blade 3 Trinity Insidious 4 Cars {Pixar} Set E: Avengers Age of Ultron Zack Snyder's Justice League The Flash Wonder Woman 1984
Now I want a release of 2001 with non-stop Hanks commentary
i'd pay good money for that.
Right!!
U watch a movie with commentary bruh
*Opening scene with main theme music*
Narrator: “My moma always said, Life is like a box of chocolates”
One of the few actors to actually take this question seriously lmao
He's obviously a movie fan. He said he was seriously into movies when he was 10 and now he's a known filmmaker ☝
It doesn't have to be serious.
It's just favorite movies, not the solution for climate change.

Tom Hanks is the type of guy who says Motion picture instead of movie
as he should
Hes the last of that generation (or mentored by the previous generation who did) who called it motion pictures or a 'picture'. Sounds nicer anyway.
They're films

I absolutely love that he answered so sincerely
Love how genuine he is
i thought he was going to say "they're cool as fuck" for a second
he really should've tbh
YES! The Best Years of Our Lives gets some love from Tom Hanks. It remains one of my favorite moves and I watch it at least once a year.
he took this so seriously... i'm both beside myself and obsessed with him
2001 and The Best Years Of Our Lives in the same top 4 is such a wonderful combo! 😍
I was so happy to hear him pull out “The Best Years of Our Lives.” Really good movie.
I have been recommending this movie to people for years.
Love Dana Andrews in that film
What a coincidence that he included 'Hard Days Night' because I would certainly have included 'That Thing You Do' in my list.
These are good picks!! He’s so likable in his enthusiasm for these childhood favorites!!
The Beatles drop their Scouse accents for their film which is very sad but nobody outside UK would understand Scouser.
I’d pay good money for a Tom Hanks 2001 commentary track
Love that he loves The Best Years of Our Lives.
What a love for cinema he exudes
One of the best actors of our time right there. Love me some Tom
The Best Years of Our Lives.
*Please* give us the experience of 2001 with Tom Hanks audio commentary
Love this. And also... I probably should have been able to predict that his favorites would include a classic about space, a classic about WW2, and a classic about '60s rock and roll.
missing one with children... I thought that were his favorites ones.
Loved the "Best Years of Our Lives" shoutout! Such an underrated gem
Tom Hanks got based picks
Legitimately awesome answers Tom Hanks is so great
One of the most interesting answers I've seen in this series. Great list. I need to watch The Best Years of Our Lives now
It's a great movie one of my favourites
Mad respect for the Midnight Cowboy pick. I love that movie so much, so underrated
I wonder if it always was? He was a little young to have seen that upon release, but I'd like to ask him what year or age he discovered the film's heart.
"Underrated" is so Overused and misused on RUclips. It's riduculous
That's a man of a kind
Such a cool, humble and funny guy! So adorable 😍
Tom Hanks is such a cool guy
That was amazing!
I love this man.
Speaking of favorite movies when young. Turner n Hooch, Toy Story and Forrst Gump taught me and moved me
Good calls - all on my all time faves list too
One of my favorite actors regardless of that one film controversy
This came up in my feed on the 60th anniversary of the world premiere of A Hard Day’s Night!
Totally agree with all of these !!!! 🎬🎞️📽️🥇💯
"2001: a space odyssey" is one of my favourite movies too, really just a classic. I have not seen the second movie and the fourth movie, but I always forget how fun "a hard days night" is. It really is just an enjoyable film to watch.
Check them out! Both are emotionally powerful!

The world loves Tom Hanks.

Is Tom Hanks a Beatle fan? Because YESSS
I'll have to be in a better mood before I revisit Midnight Cowboy.

I would put Rear Window, The Pianist, The Best Year of Our Lives and 12 Angry Men(or Vertigo, so hard to choose).
Interesting that all of his picks have to do with a period of time: 2001, Years, Days night, and midnight.
I thought he was gonna "Number 4,Toy Story"...
it's got a Cowboy in it😂
My favourites.... 1. Forrest Gump 2. Forrest Gump 3. Forrest Gump 4. Forrest Gump 😊😊😊😊 adorable, adorable, absolutely adorable.
How'd you like Gump Worsley?
Now I want to see Tom Hanks in a space themed sci-fi movie.
Tom Hanks is the man. Toy Story is one of the best motion pictures of all time.
1. The Godfather
2. Star Wars ( Just the Lucas movies)
3. 12 Angry Men
4. The Good, The Bad and the Ugly
12 Angry Men is on my list as well
Hey dummie, you'd have only 4 Star Wars movies. And not the best ones.
❤❤❤❤

He’s great, the ole bosom buddy
He was very passionate and he didn't include any Spielberg movie: Really enjoyed this one.
If you don't have a Kubrick in your top five, you're a grinder.
1. FIGHCHY CLUBEY
2. E.T
3. FRANKENSTEIN
4. ORIGINAL WILLY WONKS

Probably Mr Nolan could have a night in with Mr Hanks and watch 2001 as Nolan blatantly said he still doesnt understand that movie
Why is he tired?
He was being sarcastic
