For anyone wondering, this song was originally written by Adrian Păunescu around 1988-1990, and sung by his son, Andrei Păunescu, this version is performed by Mircea Patovan.
There is some controversy regarding the authorship of the song (which was originally a poem).
From what I’ve gathered, some people believed the song was created by Sava Negrean Brudașcu. However, according to Andrei Păunescu himself in a video performance, that version was intentionally written with the same line („Doamne ocrotește-i pe români") without the author’s permission.
For some reason that I can’t seem to understand, Brudașcu's version ended up being more widely promoted than the original by Păunescu's father.
The meaning of the lyrics in Brudașcu’s song is quite different, even sadder. For comparison, the first verses highlight this contrast:
    „Doamne, nu uita de noi
    Suntem săraci, plini de nevoi"
    ("God, don't forget about us
    We're poor, full of needs")
