The stereo effect is often lost when tracks are being played in clubs or other parties for multiple reasons. 1. many people who frequent techno events often prefer to dance right against the bass bins (yes most of the people I know that I know wear hearing protection.) so if they are right in front the left stack they arent experiencing the stereo effects. 2. at clubs that dont exclusively cater to the techno, dnb, dub, trance crowd they often have satalite speakers located throughout the club. The installation of these speakers are often an afterthought and they rarely are summed to be mono, and with music that has elements that werent checked for mono compatibility often ends up just not playing out of half the speakers in the club. and 3. Often large soundsystems set up for techno are setup in mono specifically so that the first reason isnt an issue. Im sure you check for mono compatibility when it comes to your tracks, but regardless if you check, if you are expecting that stereo image to be a build a sense of energy or tension when played in a club dont couunt on that. I definately have bought tracks thinking that the stereo image created in tracks was awesome, and then hear that not be present in the club, and its a massive letdown.
Yes you are right, but because of that it makes sense to always prepare the tracks with mono compatibility but also don't miss out on stereo because there are definitely also occasions in which the listening situation is another one like online mixes or regular streaming on home speakers or headphones. And then mono sounds pretty one dimensional to me. I think both has to be considered and therefore I prefer to produce so that it suits both situations perfectly :)
@@polygonia8301 I figured you knew that, although I felt it was something that people watching the video should know especially people who haven't DJ'd many proper gigs
@@donnydarko7624 Yeah absolutely, I'll create a video in which I'll talk about the stereo topic also in reference to the club compatibility. Thanks for your input!
really fantastic. I've been listening to alot of Amapiano, and finding alot of what you would expect to be 4 on the floor kicks is sonically being taken up by the wooden percussion sounds and usually a really deep sub bass. Your point on using alot of modulation is a really important key point here - if you want things to sound "organic" you need to create alot of movement. One thing I like to do is use the Ableton Erosion module, and modulate that which creates some interesting noise and tonal changes over time that works especially well with drums.
small question, im just getting into mono/stereo processing now so have been experimenting with mid/side, summing to mono, and duplicating mono signals and panning them to make them stereo. how much delay would you recommend doing when panning two mono signals into the stereo field? is there a limit to how much you should offset or is that just taste.
I will create a video in which I explain in detail which techniques you can use to make things sound stereo :) There are several ways to achieve it. When you do it as you described, it's not as effective as some other tricks. That what you're creating is basically a phaser. what you really want is not only duplicating the same signal and delaying it, but also changing the signal a little bit, so that the phase is not the same anymore. You don't even need to delay it. And in the best case you not only duplicate but use four tracks instead, all having a slightly different signal. Then the stereo is much bigger and has more depth.
@polygonia8301 Thank you for the reply. The terminology with stereo can get quite confusing, so an in-depth video there would be amazing for me. For example, is the mid in mid side just a mono signal? And what effects I can place on each panned signal without bouncing them to differentiate them. And also what elements of the Track to completely mono, keep stereo, or sum mono and re-widen. So many questions, thanks for the knowledge!
spannend! organic sound indeed. Does the session view have any place in your production workflow? i tend to start there, and end in the arranger. Although i prefer Bitwig nowadays, since it has vertical scenes :) Grüße aus München
Yes Bitwig is amazing. Going to look into that later this year as well. :) I use the session view mainly for my live sets. Since I am always arranging from the beginning on to speed up my production process, I tend to always use the arrangement view. I think the session view is great for exploring and building some nice loops. But as I do so much with automation curves right from the start, I definitely prefer the arrangement view for my work flow.

Hello dear :) Thanks so much for your fruitful comment! Yes indeed, I keep reverb at a minimum and only use it there where I really want to have it as an accent. @polygonia8301 It might sound a bit weird but I love watery sounds and bubbly sounds, have been on a quest for a while trying to learn how to make them... The watery sounds you create are among the best I have heard. I am really looking forward to that video! - thank you so much.

I’ve been looking through your works for a while now and I’m curious to know what music gear you find yourself using ? Definitely interested and curious!
As I want to avoid any harsh peaks which will be problematic in the mastering afterwards. I use limiters only in that way that the clipping is not hearable and the unwanted peaks are still cut. Of course I don't want the signal to be undynamic, but I also don't want it to be too dynamic. It always depends a bit on the usecase. Sometimes it can be a nice choice of style to use a heavy limiter as well.
I don't play my tracks live actually, I play completely different material in my live sets. I am iteratively working on these, so that it never sounds the same.
Thank you for sharing this, it was such a pleasure to watch! I love your music and to see your process and hear about how you think about the different components of the composition really gives me a much deeper appreciation. I’d love to hear more about your process(es) and methodologies for starting and finishing tracks. Given your limited time to produce, I’m sure you’ve worked out some great practices in this regard :) Very much looking forward to more of your videos!
Id like to give a tipp on your automation drawing at ~ 13:50. I would use the shaper lfo thing because you can automate the offset, jitter, depth and stuff. I know it is pure shit and its fucking frustrating that it doesnt have vertical grid but anyways i llike to use it on fileposition too on granulator. also you can draw in random shit, then map the phase to macro and press random until you like the sound (ofc add other effects with lfo's and also map them to macros to randomise all at once). I feel like that is a cheat code to happy accidents because you dont have to take so much time to turn all the knobs individually.
Yes I know that one, it’s handy sometimes. I actually love to also vary my curves at some spots for example and for that purpose it‘s a bit more easy to do it like I did. That could also be achievable by using various shapers and turning them on and off. But sometimes I feel more flexible when I draw that in the automation curve section directly. It depends a bit on what you want to achieve in the end. :) thanks for your fruitful comment, I am sure some producers here appreciate your tip 🌸
No, I am just too lazy to plug all synths, spend huge amounts of money and make space for them etc. I am very satisfied with my computer as I am a pc nerd. For my part I prefer it as i feel very free like this. It's a matter of individual taste I think. The result is that what counts in the end :)
@@polygonia8301fair enough! I can see the appeal of just having your laptop and not being attached to "the studio". I had a slow computer when I started to make music and naturally drifted towards carrying out the bulk of composition and sound design on hardware because hey, it doesn't run out of cpu and stutter. I think I would have to do a lot of intermediate bounces in order to pull off some of longer processing chains like in your project. It's fun to see other people's workflows.
@@personnealienee Haha yeah well I have several computers and many acoustic instruments standing and hanging around actually. So it's still feeling like a proper studio with proper acoustic and greaet monitors from my point of view. I am not really digging the laptop lifestyle, that's only me on tour. I work on a tower PC at home ;) And of course, producing on a shitty computer is no fun at all :) Also with a small laptop screen it's really annoying. I prefer the nerd space ship ;)
an excellent example of making the vey best sound imagery ,with precision your accuracy becomes naturally organical(sic)

Keep it up. It's very interesting.)
Thanks a lot :)
This is brilliant and I'd love to watch more from you. Did any of the other artists (other than Mordio) break down their approaches for this compilation? How can we find these if so?
Thanks for tuning in :)
There is one other production inside video for a track of this VA by FTP Doctor: ruclips.net/video/CSYvUVkzy6g/видео.htmlsi=QstSCpDlA5d21sRb

Hi - I discovered you through your track "Mind Alteration". Your work is immense. It was a pleasant surprise to find you are using software only - I thought you might have an army of Elektron machines. Thank you for posting this insight into your work. Did you get the lovely watery sounds in "Mind Alteration" using Ableton stock filter and the Phaser/Flanger? it would be great to make sounds so watery and organic...
Lovely to hear that you enjoy my sounds. Yes I am software only and I love it haha :D No need to spend any money at all for good quality sounds.
There are actually tons of techniques to let your music sound watery. I will do a little video about this too when I find time to do the next one.
@polygonia8301 It might sound a bit weird but I love watery sounds and bubbly sounds, have been on a quest for a while trying to learn how to make them... The watery sounds you create are among the best I have heard. I am really looking forward to that video! - thank you so much.
Just discovered you, great productions and that HOR set is really something, congrats! any chance you could reveal the ID on the track at 35 mins.
Which hör set do you mean? I can give you the ID if you tell me which one :)
@@polygonia8301 It's the Octobre 21st 2023 set, the track comes in it a 33 mins, the sound design is incredible, thank you for get back to me!! :D
@@AllSeeingIrishMan Lovely, it's my recent track for Fur:ther Sessions called Flumen. You can support it here: furthersessions.bandcamp.com/album/vivendum-3
ahhhh you're so good!! I bought your Da Nao Tian Gong EP a couple weeks back and play all of the tracks every time I spin at home. Magical music, thank you. Will be purchasing Vivendum 3 today :)@@polygonia8301
I’ve been looking through your works for a while now and I’m curious to know what music gear you find yourself using ? Definitely interested and curious!
I use Ableton only and love to record my acoustic instruments plus my voice. But voila, that's all :)
Ooooh this is awesome! I noticed you do limiter on hihat & shaker tracks. I'm very curious why 😊
@@polygonia8301 I see, thanks for explaining - huge fan!
@@clarkflavor Thanks !!
How do you play it live? 😊
Thanks for tuning in. Very happy to read your words! As soon as I find the time, I'll do more of those videos :)
thanks for your fruitful comment, I am sure some producers here appreciate your tip 🌸
HITTER!!!
Thanks for popping by :)
YeaH!
:)
@@polygonia8301 looking forward to your next exploration, if you plan on doing another one, dizl ;)
cool! pitch shifters can go a long way when abused, can't they? :D why do you stay away from hardware? dislike the lack of control?
@@polygonia8301 anyway, big fan of your precise sound design since Deformed Human Nature !
@@personnealienee Haha yeah well I have several computers and many acoustic instruments standing and hanging around actually. So it's still feeling like a proper studio with proper acoustic and greaet monitors from my point of view. I am not really digging the laptop lifestyle, that's only me on tour. I work on a tower PC at home ;)
And of course, producing on a shitty computer is no fun at all :) Also with a small laptop screen it's really annoying. I prefer the nerd space ship ;)
@@personnealienee aaw that's lovely to hear! Thanks a lot for your support!
