If we (a) standardize both X and Y to mean 0, std dev =1, and (b) compute the covariance of the standardized values, the result is Pearson's correlation. The formula Mr Woo is working with is best viewed as a "computational formula" rather than a conceptual formula. If folks don't understand covariance and std. deviations, then the formula doesn't make sense.
