It has been many decades since I had a statistics course and I viewed your presentations to refresh my memory on this facet of the subject. At that time, Pearson was not part of our course. As you were drawing your squares, something didn't seem quite right to me. The distance from any point down or up to the line does not seem to be the value the equation is asking for. Y - Y(bar) does not ask for the distance from the Y value of the point to the value of the line. It asks for the distance from the Y value of the point to the calculated mean Y value. If your Y(bar) mean value is 4.5, wouldn't we draw the difference for the first data point (0,3) up to y = 4.5? Our deviations are compared to the mean and not to the line. As I mentioned, it has been a very long time since I studied this subject. It is possible that with more algebra, the differences to the line may balance out to the easier to calculate differences to the mean. Thanks for the presentation. You've given me a bit to think about.
That confused me as well. As a matter of fact, if you look up the pearson correlation coefficient on wikipedia, you'll see that it measures the correlation between two variables in a dataset, or 'how well can I approximate my data with a line?'. The connection to the actual regression line shown here happens if you set y=y_data and x=y_regression-line in the formula.

@@soniyabharti5284 Hi Soniya, it depends what yr looking for, what I mean is if yr looking for a pure maths ebook/paperback with 300+ pages of equations and formulas page after page that is heavy reading to get thru, it's not like that. Thats what I was expecting, but it's written in a different way. Eddie goes thru multiple types of examples in the 26 chapters thru out book in his story telling way describing how everyday things we may think don't really involve or display pure maths principles at first look, but Eddies then explains with his story telling how each of these 26 topics involve underlying maths principles at their cores and the reasons for their what, why, how and the way they look etc for each of these topics. I was pleasantly surprised as I found it interesting and light to read. Some of the examples are things like, Why are rainbows circles, Sound Notes, Lightning and Blood Vessels. So if yr looking for that type of thing it's interesting and enjoyable and easy to read and understand. But if you want at book with a full index at the back (there isn't one) where you can look up Formula and Equations by name, one after the other, with them all fully laid out and described number by number, it's not like that. Sorry this is a bit long but I wanted to try and give you the best overall description I felt would help you make a call. All the best, cheers Kev

Hi, I still did not get how denominator standardizes the term. could someone please explain how and what is the meaning behind denominator? Numerator I understand conceptually that for some X distance from its mean, Y scales respectively from it's mean. What does denominator mean conceptually?

Great video. Based on my formal education, I would never admit to watching this video but this is the first time I have intuitively understood the meaning of "least square regression". Many years after finishing your formal education, its a good idea to go back and review concepts. I use regression all the time in practice but rely so heavily on software that I forgot the equations and what they are functionally doing. Thanks.

What I don't get is why do you have differences with the mean in the formula if the regression considers differences with the line? The line and the mean are different, aren't they? (Except if the line has 0 slope I guess)

Any natural number can be find out by start with zero and adding 1 as adding 1 increases the value that's means 1 isn't less than zero or equal to zero

Hmm, shouldn’t the lines from the data points be perpendicular to the mean line? Instead of being perpendicular to the cartesian axis?
