  • We raise and preserve a whole lot of rhubarb at the Grow to Gather Homestead because it’s versatile, delicious and so darn hardy. In this video, Frankie-Lou demonstrates drying rhubarb as a space saving technique and discusses the many ways we use it throughout the year. Topics covered include: stalk prep, spacing and rehydration.

Girl, I'm 54, been on a farm for the majority of my life, fed my family farm raised food, and have never ever thought of drying rhubarb. Keep the content coming! Even at my age, you're giving me ideas!

Thanks so much Veta! I’m so glad it’s helpful (ladies of our age have to share our secrets or there’s no hope for a delicious future)!

That’s a great vlog; thanks! I will try dehydrating some rhubarb from my freezer soon. I love teas in the winter & that sounds so interesting.

I’m so glad you like the rhubarb use suggestions. It really is one of my favourite crops and I love it when other folks start to get interested in other ways to use it. I hope you holiday season is also going great!

Great alternative to freezing! A video sharing some of your rhubarb recipes would be great!

Thanks! Glad you like the technique. I will be creating and sharing more videos with other rhubarb recipes as I work my way through the rhubarb this week. Rhubarb liqueur and Rhubarb Red Pepper Jelly are on the agenda so far.

Well will wonders never cease. Absolutely brilliant. At 58 it never occurred to me to dehydrate it. Darn near dehydrate at least part of every crop. Know what I am doing with my rhubarb this year. My biggest problem is knowing when to harvest rhubarb. The only thing in my garden that I ponder every year when to harvest it.
I live in a zone 3 up north. Heck our garden is just being planted with late snow and wet conditions. Was looking at it yesterday and again started that darn pondering. When is it too late to harvest the rhubarb?
2nd problem and ashamed to admit this. I only know one recipe for strawberry rhubarb jam. So glad to hear you are going to show some recipes.
Heard of rhubarb bbq sauce. But do not have enough experience with this plant to know what its flavor blends well with. Not really partial to the taste if it alone.
Sadly every year I harvest and freeze then following spring still have the same number of bags to be cleaned out of freezer. It is all but forgotten.
    Thank you for the video.

I’m so glad you found the channel and are liking it. When it comes to harvesting rhubarb, I usually do so until it starts to get a little limp and/or have brown scarring on the stems. If you go to my main channel page, you will see I have a whole playlist called “Rhubarb Recipes” with 5 things on there now and I will be adding more soon.

Never thought of drying it. But then as soon as I have enough I make my rhubarb cake. Good old farm recipes, eggs, sugar, and flour plus 4 cups of rhubarb. Yum.

That does sound yummy. I’m a celiac so I always have to adapt those recipes but sometimes it works well

Can dried rhubarb still cook up like fresh rhubarb in desserts?

    • @frankie-lounelligan7050

I’m afraid that the rhubarb consistency changes quite a bit once it’s been dehydrated then rehydrated. It’s better used in stuff like sauces or teas then things like pies or desserts where you want it to have a “juiciness”
