    don't put your knife on a spear. You don't want to loose it or damage it. Just make a wood tipped spear for defense or hunting fish.

    • @haydenrasband1601
      @haydenrasband1601 7 лет назад

      Tell me what's more durable and more likely to catch a fish, a steel knife meant for cutting and penetration. Or a piece of green wood what is going to flatten If it hits something hard. If you know how to do it right you will not loose or damage your knife

    • @DB.KOOPER
      @DB.KOOPER 7 лет назад +12

      The wood tipped spear if you carve it right, green or not, game very-much over... DO NOT use your knife for a spear unless you're carrying multiple backups, and even then it's not ideal. Plus with wood you can carve a barb into the tip which is very important if you're after fish in fast moving water. The "knife spear" is a typical "internet bushcrafter" trope that goes right along with whittling a spoon and all the fantasy-based "survival" skills they claim to have based primarily on cutting cardboard in their backyards and watching B.Gryllis on the tube (best one I've seen is that dipship German broad "Lilly" who claimed she was carving a spear to protect herself from DEER and BEARS... holy hell that girl is incredibly fucking stupid, but anyway). Better to make as many carved spears as you can for back-up/repeated use/different tasks, and then fire-harden the tips, then to make one spear and commit your blade to it. This isn't a movie, you're not gonna fight a bear or "hunt" a moose with your "knife-spear" and your knife IS a life-death tool if it comes down to the point where you're making a spear to viably feed let alone "defend" yourself.

    • @jamesaritchie1
      @jamesaritchie1 7 лет назад +1

      There is NO way to do it right. It's a silly, dangerous thing to do, and is never, ever necessary. There must be twenty better ways of catching fish, but if you do want to use a spear, it's just not very bright to say you don't do it because a green piece of wood will flatten if you hit something hard. No one with any sense or knowledge of survival would ever fasten his knife to the end of a spear.

    • @landonbragg6732
      @landonbragg6732 5 лет назад

      Your all wrong whenever you make a wood spear heat it up in he fire and it bubbles the moisture out of it and it becomes hard not as hard as steel but you will have a strong sharp spearpoint and you will have no chance of losing your knife

    out of curiosity... why lash a knife? I see the challenge and it lends the idea your having to create a spear for what ever purpose but most importatnly the knife is obviously the only tool you have other than boot laces. why not just spear tip the tree limb, keep your laces on your boots save your only tool from being lost, broken, to say? use on gutting your meal???

    • @haydenrasband1601
      @haydenrasband1601 7 лет назад

      If you can find a piece of nice hard wood that won't flatten if it hits something that would be a better alternative to a knife spear, but in a desperate situation as long as you are careful the knife will work great.

    I've been considering switching to a neck knife from my edc folders. My wife and I bought season passes to a local water park here and carrying a folder isn't an option and I always like to have some sort of blade for emergency purposes, and with a wild 8 year old son with autism that means daily use. I like the bright colors you can get with the esee. Makes it easier to find when I'm scanning the house or wherever to make sure I didn't leave it within reach of my son. Ha ha.

    I have both the Becker necker and the Izula. They are both decent blades for what you get but I think the Izula has a slight advantage in the edge retention dept.
    don't have any experience with the Tops neck knife but it looks pretty decent.
    I think a neck knife/back up blade like these is always essential when outdoors. Folders just don't hold up over time to even a small fixed blade in these situations.
    Thank you guys for the opportunity. Good luck to everyone.

      Agree, small fixed blades Wayy more durable than Any folder. Can depend your life on a good fixed blade knife' Especially any Esee knife. My favorite is the Esee Stainless Steel Izula with black G-10 handles 💪

    When switching between knives and people you may want to put a small annotation that says what knife is currently on screen. It can be difficult to remember which knife is which when they were being used for the spear.

    Interesting vid. Would have been nice to see some opinions on the knives a bit more though. (Though I do understand that you want to sell all three brands). I would think that for longer use the Tops would have been more comfortable since it had scales.

    I really liked the fact that you guys continued the challenge through the wet and cold conditions. I only wish there would have been more content on the durability of the individual knives. I also agree on the edge retention on the becker. The best way to over come that is to put a convex edge on it. Thanks for the vid.

    Say Heah Guys, Yeah, That's why I always push for more companies to use tge 1095 CroVan over just the regular 1095. Although I like my Top's Mini Scandi Knife, but then I have the BK-14 too. I think I found my neck knife, I like full handles, My first full handle neck knife was the Rodent Solution which is a bit heavy, But over a collar it's managable especially a coat. Then I got the Browning Independence Fix Blade which I really like and it's C M 154. Then I bought a Stromeng set because I always wanted a Leuku, so I got the KS 9 and the KS 5 and then I got the Bhuku LIL STAK which is one of my lightest knives I own and it's made out of tge Sandvik 12c27 Stainless Steel which holds a keen edge, Yeah I really like it, But I still love my heavier Skookum Bush Tool, , ,

    Hey, Blade HQ, I got this idea. You know how you guys do the contests with the knife obstacle course? I was thinking you could either do a different type of contest or add this element to the “obstacle” course. Have part of the course be a segment or several different segments in which you have all the different types of opening methods represented by their respective knives and have the contestants open and close each type of mechanism like 5 or10 times. For instance, there could be a CRKT Snaplock, a flipper, an out-the-front knife, a back lock, a CRKT Fulcrum, and any other type of mechanism ( There could also be a Spyderco hole-type that needs to be Spydee flicked too. ) . I just think that the finesse required to open and close should be incorporated into the fun. I don’t see any videos about speedy open/closing. PLEASE!!!!

    I wear my Mini-Skandi Survival (TOPS Neck Knife) everday as part of my EDC set (neck knife, folder, and a fixed blade). Its perfect for me because I wear it under my shirt (at my office and even to formal outings).
    It comes with a whistle that has TOPS information, on a stainless ball chain. The stainless irritated the back of my neck (especially during the Summer), so I replaced it with a 550 paracord.
    During last years Summer, I noticed a small spot of corrosion on the tip of the blade. I believe this occured because of humidity and sweat getting through the small crack/opening on the top of the sheath where the tip of the blade sits once sheathed. But this was resolved by small application of Aegis Daily Cleaner (rust prevention/cleaner solution).
    I highly recommend this knife. The performance is great (as seen on many videos) and so is the quality. 1095 Steel proved to be a great Steel as long as you take steps to ensure the blade gets proper care (especially if you get it wet). Hell, even Stainless can rust.

    Great job on this one guys. The weather change on stage 3 gave a condition that would likely happen if your trying to survive in the wild. It's not always gonna be prefect. The ESEE Izula is a great neck knife, I own one myself and it has served me well many times. I like the look of the TOPS MSK 2.5, from the video it looks like a scandi grind which IMO would work well for these tasks. Would be nice to put that one through its paces.

  • @Galeocerdo123
    @Galeocerdo123 10 лет назад

    Interesting video. One of the key things that struck me was while making the spear, the skeletonized knives (izula and becker necker) allow for a much more sturdy lashing if you'd actually lash the paracord through the holes in the handle. They wouldn't remain stuck in the stump, I'm sure. The final test really shows how variables such as weather can influence the outcome. Very interesting! In the end, all knives performed well. Thanks for sharing!

    The only way I'm ever going to get caught in a survival situation without proper clothing, and without a LOT of gear, is if someone robs me at gunpoint and steals all my clothing,. They'll also have to carry away all my other gear at the same time.
    Even in beautiful, sunshiny, hot weather where I don't need a jacket, I still have enough gear on my belt and in my pockets to get through any survival situation comfortably, as long as I'm not seriously injured. I'll have a belt knife, two pocketknives, a small tomahawk head, and a Leatherman Super Tool 300 that has a great saw ll also have cordage, a good medical kit, a good fire kit, a large sheet of nylon that makes a great tarp that will fold up and fit in my back pocket, And I'll have a handgun.
    This doesn't even count what I carry in the haversack that I only take off when I'm sleeping. Even then, it stays inside the tent.
    I know I can survive in the wild with only a knife because I have, under supervision for safety's sake, done so for an entire month, but it's extremely tough to think of any circumstances where I would actually get caught in the wild with only a knife. Either I'm going to have a lot of gear with me, or I won't have any, including a knife, because someone stole everything I had, pants, and all.

    I have never understood the concept of a neck knife. I mean, folders are thin, slim, usually very light and can have bigger blades so more useful. Do you really need batoning in a true survival situation? Unlock them and it's ok. Neck fixed knives are so small that never could do that task.
    Hey, I don't consider into that category models like the Esee Izula!

    I like the Izula and would like to have one but got a GREAT deal on the BK11 a while back and have come to really appreciate it. The contest, to me, shows each of the knives are great choices. I really enjoyed the detailed figure four trap description. I prefer having the micarta handles on the knife but I can see the advantage of the flat frame.

    good job guys! the izula did the best in my opinion maybe due to the high edge sharpeness thin stock and great edge geometry. the bk 14 came in second because the sharpness wasnt as great and the geometry might have been a little biased to one side but the other knife i wasnt truly a fan of because of the geometry but to me being a knife guy sharpening isnt an issue
    toothy perfection for defense and vegetation and polished for push cutting into wood ;p

    I have several Ka-Bar Becker knives and I find they hold a good edge. HOWEVER the 11/14 sheaths are made of a nylon plastic reinforced with fiberglass, which if you drag the edge against will dull the knife quickly and my experience confirms this. This issue is even more common with a new knife/sheath, as the knife is drawn and inserted it will have a chance to wear a channel in the sheath around the edge. Or many people with use a small file or sandpaper to open the area up quicker. Probably my only complaint with Ka-Bar knives is their response to this issue, which has been nil.

    I found the Tops knife more appealing, also I think the sheath has less bulk and wasted material.
