Tyler's shelter won objectively in my book. I've got to say, it was pretty funny to hear these shelters called "forts" near the end. It's like the inner eight-year-old boy was coming out of all three of you. haha What kept you guys from trying these things out over-night?
I liked it! We have two epic projects in the works. One includes multiple channels and skills teaching. One is another bugout! keep watching. Also check out Outdoormanly. I have not filled the content yet but it's in the works. Good luck on the drawing!
I'm not sure but ,if anyone else is searching for what do you need to survive in the desert? try Franaar Escape Death Formula (do a google search )? Ive heard some super things about it and my co-worker got amazing results with it.
80 bucks huh? I'd have gone with a small forest axe and the cheapest mora I could find ;) Fun video though, keep it up guys! I love watching you guys learn!
Aaron wins in my book! A little more spacious and those rocks are going to hold heat from the fire and keep you warm all night! Love these competition videos keep 'em coming!
I really like the rock addition to Jaron's. With that said, as far as pure insulation and "Making it through til Mornin" factor, I have to go with Tyler's. Def. had more insulation and structurally more sound. I think you all did a great job considering the skill levels and short time frame. In reality, with more time, all 3 shelters good be improved and worked great! I think you all deserve a big "Atta Boy!" for jobs well done.
This video is outstanding. Not because of the shelters (none were great probably because of the 40 minute limit) or all of the false hype about the knives used. But all of these men should be applauded and congratulated for their efforts here, great job guys. This video proves you need the best quality knife you can get, save up if you have to. Your life is worth more. Check out what some of the top survival instructors, Rob from Sigma 6 survival school, Dave Canterbury(Dual Survival) from the Pathfinder school has to say about cheap knives esp the Bear Grylls piece of junk.
I'm not real big on bear grill knifes...I don't like the plastic handles ...but I do see some people saying..."that booklet is a waste of space I don't need it "...acually...you can burn that or use it for cover of your head in the rain...they just have all the tips for noobs that can't survive...
Fun stuff. Ummm. All deserve a gold star for the attempt. Given more time, Jaron's was going to be my favorite. However, given the time constraint, Tyler's was more complete.
TJack Survival good choice on the Afghan i have one of those im a big fan its a great workhorse knife and for the price im not worried about using it for multiple tasks
****The giveaway portion of this video has ended. Thanks to all who entered. We will private message the winners so watch your inbox closely. Keep watching for more chances to win****
It was nice to see one of my knives used, except, my O.K.C Ranger Afghan is the 5160 model with orange G-10 handles, and I paired it off with the Ranger RD-9, same steel, same handle, actually it was my starter set, I also use a Browning Independence, with G-10 Orange handles, or my BK-14 with orange slabs, I always liked choils on my knives, it's a great set, but I also found out, I like the Saber Grind over the Full Grind, so my favorite set is my Swamp Rat's, your video was great, because, that's how I enjoy my wilderness trips, I luv building shelters, and even cooking, great stuff guys, great video.
My vote is going to Tyler. The entrance is a little small, but that makes for better heat insulation. Add a little more brush to the top, a grouping of rocks and a fire so that it radiates inwards and you're set! All in all, all shelters would surely do. And to have made any of these in under 40 minutes is great!
I've got to say guys. I do really like the way you two are structuring these competitions. We need a big ole over nighter with "pro's" that people vote on. Should be entertaining.
my vote is for tyler, even if it has a little entrance, it provides more insulation. in that scenario i would have prefered a simpler lean to type shelter (deep enough to give protection against the rain) with a fire reflector in front of it
I say Jarron because he was resourceful yes they all were great shelters and Tyler yes his was sweet! But he does have a whole lot more experience then the rest but I still do say Jarron did the best
Ill be 18 by the time u guys announce the winner so can i enter and i think the best was tylers u guys did good but made them to tall and a lot heat would have escaped from ur doors
I like this challenge. In a survival situation time is not necessarily on your side( approaching sunset, impending inclement weather). Great video. Thank you!
Sorry guys I think Tyler won his shelter seemed better insulated and it had a tighter opening which would probably allow less air to enter in thanks for the vid
Totally disagree with the "pro"s comment at end about shelter over fire in winter. 100% Disagree. Here in the freezing Canadian Rocky Mountain winter, if you can get a fire started, there is lots of perfect dead-fall that burns well. Build up a nice 5 foot long fire, and you can sit by that all night and survive. Use some logs to get off the ground and you will survive a bit better. Now.... that is a long cold night of... sleep 20 minutes, wake up, stoke the fire, turn around, sleep 20 minutes, wake up, stoke the fire, turn around.... But without fire... You will just freeze.
I'd say Tyler, his knife to me had what I would want in a knife and his shelter was small and tough, perfect for keeping heat and maybe stopping falling branches from above. Overall, thought it was a really great video and enjoyed seeing the shelters and techniques.
I am shocked no one grabbed the Schrade SCHF9. It beats anything on the show in all areas of usage. Too much emphasis on insulation with small grasses, but for 40 minutes...good job, and TY for the entertainment.
Great Video Guys. Keep them coming. I vote for Tyler's shelter. It was the most complete in the allotted time. It looks like it would keep you the most dry and warm.
Tyler's was the best but I still don't think it was finished even though he said he was finished with time to spare, from the footage from inside his shelter you could see a lot of daylight, and if I can see the clouds the clouds can certainly see me! Your going to be wet and cold in all of the unless there are no gaps in the canopy what's so ever! Good video
I like Jaron's shelter the best. It was roomy enough he wasn't banging up against everything getting in. AND I like he had the rocks in there for some heat at night.
Nice shelters but I'm wondering why didn't you all build lean tos? It would have saved the time. But then again in that area it makes sense to make an a frame.
Hey, Blade HQ, I got this idea. You know how you guys do the contests with the knife obstacle course? I was thinking you could either do a different type of contest or add this element to the “obstacle” course. Have part of the course be a segment or several different segments in which you have all the different types of opening methods represented by their respective knives and have the contestants open and close each type of mechanism like 5 or10 times. For instance, there could be a CRKT Snaplock, a flipper, an out-the-front knife, a back lock, a CRKT Fulcrum, and any other type of mechanism ( There could also be a Spyderco hole-type that needs to be Spydee flicked too. ) . I just think that the finesse required to open and close should be incorporated into the fun. PLEASE!!!!????!!!???!!!???
Hey Americans, i got a question for you. What do you think about that 9 YEARS OLD girl (9 years, wtf, cant repead it enough) who shooted her instructor who gave her a FULLY AUTOMATIC UZI ?? Why do KIDS got to know that gun stuff ? Please tell what you think about it. Thank you
Tyler's shelter was the clear winner, it was structurally sound and had better insulation. Both of the other shelters would have been just as good if you hadn't put on the time limit. I've heard that the Bear Grylles knife is the most popular survival knife sold, good to know it actually worked. I'd still rather have the Ontario, or the Mora.
Tyler's shelter and knife choice were the best. Using cardboard for insulation was resourceful, but by using the ground litter left even that standing. Time given, I reckon all had a shot, but Tyler's was the best overall. A mention about base of trees and widowmakers wouldn't've hurt either...it's good to remind everyone when the opportunity presents ;)
I think Tyler won. I've spent time in such shelters in cold weather & can say I liked that Tyler started with insulation on the ground & kept the shelter small as possible. In cold weather the cold shoots straight up from un-insulated ground hard & fast. Nice challenge & well done by all. 73 Tyler de 76er Brad K.
I'd have to say Tyler's shelter is my choice of the three. Good area for construction with the natural cover, better insulated and smaller internal space meaning it's easier to keep warm. Strudeness seemed a bit lacking with the small branches but in a pinch for one night and with a time limit it would do the job. You all should have spent the night in the shelters you built and reviewed what you thought the next day. As far as choice of knives I would have gone with the Ontario Afgan Bush. Awesome job to all of you and keep up the great work.
I'm voting for Tyler's Shelter - most complete and functional. Additionally his Ontario knife has won me over - it is now on my Christmas list. I really liked the competition format and the various techniques therein. Keep 'em coming!
Tyler all the way I would think someone like Tyler would know to take a fero rod if not the skills to start a fire. insulate wise 100 times better than the other guys less of an entrance hole will stop predators maybe not bears or puma etc but smaller animals. The knife not as fancy as the other ones but effective and I’m really surprised you didn’t use a log to help cut through the branches you might of come out on top. Sometimes thinking rather than running can save you a lot of pain, remember the basics ground clearance good structure now saves pain later start with good bones and build around keeping dry is key I would also cover dry stones for heat. Now give me my knife.
My vote is for Tyler. Great job laying down to get a measurement for for the shelter and preparing the ground before building the shelter- that makes alot of sense. Also think the Ontario was the best knife of the group, Most "hard use" of the group. Cool video!
I'm a big guy and if I had Tyler's shelter it would fall on me. I think Jaron wins, especially if he built a reflecting wall and got a fire going. If it were longer(covered his whole body,) and he added a little more weight on the cardboard it would be even better.
I chose Jaron's based on pitch and cover. Everyone was wearing short sleeve shirts so a cold night seemed unlikely. I didn't know the weather forecast so I considered rain, and the possibility of hypothermia from being wet, a prominent factor.
Poor knife choices boys, don't get why you didn't choose a john adams uk military survival knife, cheap, well made, big, heavy, tank of a tool, you could probs get a shelter up in half the time as you could hack a branch down with one swing lol.
My vote is with jaron. It looked to be the most comfortable and structurally sound. The rocks will also be an advantage for heat and wind. But they all did a great job even with the Time restraint. Great vid guys :-)
The way that scenarios are incorporated into your vids is fantastic, keep up the good work. Love that you guys are including international subscribers now! Next give away I'm there haha
It's got to be Tyler's shelter sorry guys. That being said, I really think it needed to have a larger entrance. When I watched him crawl in it seemed as if it would take just the smallest arm or leg flinch the whole thing might collapse. His still gets my vote.
Tyler had the best shelter and it needed more roof insulation and filling of holes. YOU two guys would freeze and be soaked by any rain that hit your roof cover! The one under the cedar might do better in the rain, the one in the clearing area would be flooded. I think you should all have had to shelter in them for THAT night and give your reports in the morning!
in my book, tyler won as far as insulation and size lengthwise and wide-wise,although its a bit too short(height) and it could be hard to get in and out. Jaron had those rocks that he could build a fire between but,his shelter wasn't as insulated and it was short(lenght).
I would have to vote for tyler's shelter. It is a lot tighter and more compact with multiple layers of insulation for better heat retaining. Also he measured it for his body so he can be fully sheltered. The other 2 were good but could be better , just ran out of time. That gerber and mora look awesome.
Tyler's looked like it would be the warmest at night and driest in the rain, but it's definitely not for the claustrophobes of the world. He looks like a pretty skinny guy, and even *he* could barely squeeze in there.
Sorry gentelmen but Tyler's shelter is a lot more rain proof and the smaller of the three shelters witch means it will hold more body heat providing that if you guys were actually in a survival situation you'd spend more time on the shelter and probably do a fire second if you spent more time on the shelter as you gentlemen have seen in past competitions firestarting can be quite difficult and you may not have the chance to get a fire going so back to the point of Tyler shelter it is smaller it will radiate more body heat and it is more weatherproof so if none of you guys end up getting a fire Tyler's would definatly be the ideal one to stay in.
Better to spend time making your shelter comfortable insulation, insulation, and more insulation. if you can stay warm in your shelter with out a fire; that is a good shelter. Fix yourself a way to piss with out leaving your shelter. Getting enough fire wood to last all night and tending fire all night is not a good way to get rest.
I liked the use of the bark on one, one was to short. Tyler was the only one long enough, and really well covered. He also has a natural shelter above and access to pine for a fire. In fairness, in a survival situation no one is going to say , oh my I only have 40minutes , what will I do , lol. The mora is an awesome knife, Tyler knife looks like a tank.
Jaron had good concept and did well for someone with minimum survival knowledge and he had the second best knife and the best for the price of it but tyler was more organized and got it done quicker so he won but if jaron was as organized as tyler he could've had a good shelter
Great video. Shows that inexpensive knives also do the job. I found Joes shelter the best cuase of the thick insulation and the small door to crawl into. Less heat disapates through there. Ruud
I really like the Mora knife but Tyler's shelter was the better of the three. Being under the tree is a huge help when it comes to rain and having resources that are close at hand.
how could you even ask which is best, you 2 are not even to the amature level yet in your skills are you joking, which shelter....there was only one built
tyler for sure, the heat loss would be horrible in the other shelters. They really should have slept in them to drive home the point of small = cozy ;)
I like Jarons shelter idea more because it is easier to build and easier to get in, it may not be the best for some environments but that environment it worked well in.
I like Jaron's the best. Great knives! It's probably no surprise that Mora is my survival knife of choice. ;)
Tyler's shelter won objectively in my book.
I've got to say, it was pretty funny to hear these shelters called "forts" near the end. It's like the inner eight-year-old boy was coming out of all three of you. haha What kept you guys from trying these things out over-night?
Work. If it isn't your mom keeping you out if your fort it's the responsibility if your job!
Gotta say, on the off-chance I get picked for this drawing, I'll be going for that Ontario. Thanks for the reply.
I liked it! We have two epic projects in the works. One includes multiple channels and skills teaching. One is another bugout! keep watching. Also check out Outdoormanly. I have not filled the content yet but it's in the works. Good luck on the drawing!

Jaron, :)
Gotta vote for our boy Tyler. Check out more of Tyler on my Channel!
These are great. Keep making them!
the knives did little to help any of these 3 contestants improve their shelters. maybe we can think of better contest for knife qualifications
Geez might need to call an ambulance, looks like an extremely painful hit to the head... Said no one ever
This video is outstanding. Not because of the shelters (none were great probably because of the 40 minute limit) or all of the false hype about the knives used. Pulling the pine ground around the shelter is a no no. Squish that pine all around as close as possible and as much.
I'm not real big on bear grill knifes...I don't like the plastic handles ...but I do see some people saying..."that booklet is a waste of space I don't need it "...acually...you can burn that or use it for cover of your head in the rain...they just have all the tips for noobs that can't survive...

Don't know much about survival, but I'd go claustrophobic in Tyler's shelter (even though I don't have claustrophobia). My pick would be Jaron's then
Enter me in! Tyler's was the most insulated and he got done a little sooner then 40 mins! I would love to own the knife he used!
Fun times. Let's do this again in the spring with an over nighter
TJack Survival good choice on the Afghan i have one of those im a big fan its a great workhorse knife and for the price im not worried about using it for multiple tasks
Brendan MacKinnon Agreed! This is an old video. I need to do an updated one on my channel. Maybe in a few weeks.
every video you make is amazing and truly usable sir !! Blessings !!
Mark's, it gave a little more room to breathe!
Tyler's was the best one. Chose an existing tree and set up the ground. Spent time insulating the top. His experience shows.
My vote is for Tyler
Jaron's shelter. If Tyler's wasn't so small I would pick his (or if I wasn't so tall)

Casey Broggi Outstanding! It's about time I won something on here!
TJack i know
TJack you have a great channel can you shout me out
It was nice to see one of my knives used, except, my O.K.C Ranger Afghan is the 5160 model with orange G-10 handles, and I paired it off with the Ranger RD-9, same steel, same handle, actually it was my starter set, I also use a Browning Independence, with G-10 Orange handles, or my BK-14 with orange slabs, I always liked choils on my knives, it's a great set, but I also found out, I like the Saber Grind over the Full Grind, so my favorite set is my Swamp Rat's, your video was great, because, that's how I enjoy my wilderness trips, I luv building shelters, and even cooking, great stuff guys, great video.

And to have made any of these in under 40 minutes is great!
I would have to go with Tyler on this one. I thought it was cool calling the shelter a fort by the way.. all of us little boys built forts as kids.
I've got to say guys. I do really like the way you two are structuring these competitions. We need a big ole over nighter with "pro's" that people vote on. Should be entertaining.
my vote is for tyler, even if it has a little entrance, it provides more insulation. in that scenario i would have prefered a simpler lean to type shelter (deep enough to give protection against the rain) with a fire reflector in front of it
Think Jaron and Tyler i would sleep in but all 3 did better than what i could do in 40 min prob. Nice work.
I say Jarron because he was resourceful yes they all were great shelters and Tyler yes his was sweet! But he does have a whole lot more experience then the rest but I still do say Jarron did the best
Tyler won !!!!!!!!!!!! But all where good.
Fun video and Tyler's shelter looked the most well constructed though I am not sure I'd fit in it.
Ill be 18 by the time u guys announce the winner so can i enter and i think the best was tylers u guys did good but made them to tall and a lot heat would have escaped from ur doors
You can also heat extra rocks with the fire to place in the shelter to keep it warmer longer into the night.
I like the shelter that Tyler build and I think he's knife is the one I'll go for. Really good video
The glasses guys won
I vote for Tyler because his shelter seems like it would keep him out of the elements better.
I like this challenge. In a survival situation time is not necessarily on your side( approaching sunset, impending inclement weather). Great video. Thank you!
Thanks!
The pro's shelter was best for rain repellent and warmth retention. Sorry guys
Very nice video on shelter builds, thanks for sharing.
+Kullcraven Bushcraft Thanks for watching brother!
I would go with Tyler's shelter.
Sorry, gota give this one to Tyler. The other two just had to many holes.
Tyler's was the most insulated and solid shelter. However I would have made a larger entrance. It looked like he had trouble getting inside lol
The larger the entrance the more heat loss the shelter would have
Sorry guys I think Tyler won his shelter seemed better insulated and it had a tighter opening which would probably allow less air to enter in thanks for the vid
Sorry guys, gotta vote Tyler on this one. Once again very fun and informative vid
I vote for Tyler's shelter. His more structural sound with more insulation. If he had more time to add more it would be even better and weather proof.
Nice, i like the Mora knife the most.

I like marks! Seems roomy and sturdy with large support branches. Great vid guys. Love blade HQ
Tyler should win it fully covers his body.
I'd say Tyler, his knife to me had what I would want in a knife and his shelter was small and tough, perfect for keeping heat and maybe stopping falling branches from above. Overall, thought it was a really great video and enjoyed seeing the shelters and techniques.

I like Jaron's shelter the best. It was roomy enough he wasn't banging up against everything getting in. AND I like he had the rocks in there for some heat at night.
I'd say Jaron's insulation wise but Tyler's had the most protection very cool keep these vids coming
"KNIFEJUNKIE13"
Jaron won I liked his knife and shelter
Nice shelters but I'm wondering why didn't you all build lean tos? It would have saved the time. But then again in that area it makes sense to make an a frame.
I definitely think that Tyler won this, his shelter seemed to have the best insulation in my eyes.

Tyler's shelter is the best. The Mora is my favorite knife of the three.
Great video. Shows that inexpensive knives also do the job.
I found Joes shelter the best cuase of the thick insulation and the small door to crawl into. Less heat disapates through there.
Ruud
hmmm i like the shelter the mora was used on but i am an ontario fan LOL
You really should have given Tylers RUclips channel a shout out. he clearly won the competition.
Tyler for sure, sorry guys.
I'll go with Tyler's shelter, I think it is more secure.... But I prefer to enter my feet first...... Great video guys..... Congrats from Mexico
Jaron gets my vote. I'm short so my legs will probably fit too! Tyler has better insulation but I would get claustrophobic.
I'm voting for Tyler also, within the time limit he was the most comfortable and wasn't struggling with patching holes or structure.
I really like the Mora knife but Tyler's shelter was the better of the three. Being under the tree is a huge help when it comes to rain and having resources that are close at hand.
how could you even ask which is best, you 2 are not even to the amature level yet in your skills are you joking, which shelter....there was only one built
Tyler's shelter was by fare the best construction. I would have made it slightly larger to give myself more room.
tyler for sure, the heat loss would be horrible in the other shelters. They really should have slept in them to drive home the point of small = cozy ;)
Tyler's shelter looked good especially with the positioning by the tree. Impressive for a
I like Jaron's, just needed to be to be a little longer and more insulation. Tyler's was more complete, but seemed small.
I like Jarons shelter idea more because it is easier to build and easier to get in, it may not be the best for some environments but that environment it worked well in.
I'd have to go with Taylor's shelter. Good cover and little over body length.
I'd have to vote for Jaron too, but both did pretty well for 40 minutes!
