  • If you've had enough from the Atelier series but still crave some magical girl action Blue Reflection is here to give you a whole new adventure.
    Blue reflection blends the Magical Girl genre with a slice of life narrative format, and backs it all up with a turn based combat system with enough classic features and modern features to set it apart from its competitors.
    But do all of their innovations add up to strengthen the game?
    Join me in my excessively long review of the Playstation 4 version of Blue Reflection, developed by Gust Co, and published by Koei Tecmo in north america.

    1) The pictured use of "ally's" Vs "Allies" in this video isn't technically incorrect, I just picked bad shots to represent the issue. Sorry.
    2) Lastly (Since it seemed to trigger a few people) when I'm talking about people who want straight translations I'm not talking about people who are opposed to cultural changes in the writing (I am one of those people.) I'm talking about people who want literal 1:1 translations. The people I come across every now and then on twitter threads who don't understand the issues that arise from literal translations. I probably should have said "literal translations" as opposed to "Direct/straight translations." Although wikipedia acknowledges the two things as synonymous many people do not. So before anybody tries to bite my head off again, just understand who I am speaking of first.

    Wow, i actually like the graphics used on this game.
    Characters somewhat look like something out of CLAMP works, Textures are slightly realistic with vivid colors from a fantasy and nicely place shadows.

      HBS Battletech has a similar initiative subsystem in its combat. It does have some differences, though. Among them are fixed time brackets and much harder initiative reduction.

    I know objectively that this game has problems, but it's still one of my favorite games of all time. It has a dreamlike quality and I found the whole thing very moving and satisfying. I would love to see a more refined sequel with more content, particularly more level varieties in the common and MORE BOSS BATTLES. The boss battles were the highlight of the game but there just weren't enough of them.

    • @TarksGauntlet

      Yeah. Bosses were cool, but they definitely tried to stretch them out by making them appear more than once. Game has issues, but it's a damn good start for a new IP.

      We got NOA2 for that :P
      But that said there is some oddly forced in girl-on-girl action. A lot of the main characters have relationship paths. They're ultimately shallow too, you just get a bonus cutscene for maxing them out, nothing more. But the bonus cutscene I got from one was of the girls trading panties and of course one of them was too small. A bit more skin then I thought they would show in a game like this.

    Thank you for the measured and well thought-out review!
    If my interest in Blue Reflection lies primarily in its aesthetic, do you feel I might fulfill that desire simply through watching videos here and there?
    (Time commitment to me is the most expensive part of any game, and I hate to think of sinking 10+ hours in an experience with a poorly written ending or repetitive padding...)
    Thanks : )

    • @mutecolours5872
      @mutecolours5872 3 года назад +2

      if your interest lies in aesthetic then yeah, it pretty much would be if you watch some playthrough videos here and there and then watch the boss battles, but a lot of the areas are kinda samey.
      I personally didn't find any issue with that since the focus of the game is moreso on building relationships and bonding with friends more than anything else, so you won't be seeing too many extravagant sights and whatnot
      if your issue is time commitments, then the game isn't too long unless you want to max out affection for EVERY friend in the game. otherwise it's only 20 hours? less? there's only one ending so no need to worry about messing up the good ending
      i thoroughly enjoyed it and it's absolutely in my top 5 games of all time

    I have not yet finished the game as I only got it recently, but here’s my current opinion!
    I like this review a lot and don’t disagree with many of the flaws you found in the game. The only thing I disagree with is your comment about how the slice of life genre may not mix well RPG games due the similar aspects that appear in the Persona games. I lean more on the side that it just wasn’t utilized very well considering how successful those games have been. The magical girl genre is practically made for a game with similar social mechanics since many of the series focus on solving the problems of people that appear around the main characters.
    I think realistically speaking, if we think in terms of a popular show like Sailor Moon, there are many things that I think could have been included in the game to fill up the gaps instead of the many repetitive missions that appear throughout. Things like more areas too explore in the town you live in could have added more room for main and minor character backstories and also make for more side activities that help level up characters. I also think that adding a enemy with more substance to it would have made for a bit of a better story. I feel like the monsters so far have only been a problem because they are monsters. From my understanding they don’t have any major need for emotions or energy from humans so it feels like your purpose for fighting solely relies on Hinako’s wish, which isn’t a bad thing but no real information is given early on about how that wish would be granted in the first place. Yuzu and Lime also clearly hint towards other Reflectors being known in the world but from what I’ve seen so far it doesn’t seem like those characters will appear. So I think over my main issue is that the story lacks a lot of the substance that makes in feel like a magical girl series. I do like the game and hope that Gust will give it another shot, but what made me like Sailor Moon so much was how much they seemed like fun people to be around. I wanted to be a part of their friend group and join them in the fight. There are many relatable characters in this game, but aside from Hinako (so far) I know nothing about their lives outside of school and why they are the way they are.

      I love the battle, and I really enjoy the main characters and the mostly enjoyed the story. I just wish the story was more than 30% of the game. I hardly care about the translation and optimization issues to be honest.

  • @Addition2
    @Addition2 6 лет назад +3

    I enjoyed this game despite it's numerous faults, I mean it is really rare to see a Magical Girl JRPG, still waiting for that Precure Musou to be made. While there are faults, I do see some potential in Blue Reflection, I love the visuals and music, the story is interesting too as well as the characters, so if this game have a sequel, I wish it will improve by learning from their mistakes.

    • @TarksGauntlet
      @TarksGauntlet  6 лет назад +2

      Definitely. I mostly enjoyed it as well, it's just hard to express that while also honestly addressing all the short comings. Mid way through though I started having to blitz my way through the free-period missions. There really was no content in them and they made up 70% of the game. With a solid paced story and more depth I think they can make something really incredible.
      Also, Have you ever tried Omega Quintet? I feel like a lot of people ignore that one.

    • @TarksGauntlet
      @TarksGauntlet  6 лет назад +2

      Over-all I mostly enjoyed myself but It took until chapter 7 for the formula to really start weighing into me heavily. I ended up around that point just blitzing all the sidequests and only taking my time with the parts of the game that have depth. I think if they trimmed the fat and fixed the pace this could be quite remarkable. A noble first attempt, but it's not without it's issues.

      The SoL and relationship mechanics coulda been integrated better. They, on paper, sorta work, but just feel disjointed and hollow.
      They coulda been made to matter a whole lot more if players were forced to choose between engaging enemies or improving their relations with others, in time-sensitive events.

    Blue Reflection is the most soothing game I have ever played, well made. Although there are some problems, It is reasonable just by looking at the price - fair enough or even worth it (22 usd).
    Good:
    _ Nice price.
    _ I don't like most of turn based games... except this one, very cool combat.
    _ Soothing plot, good music, good concept, awesome art, well designed characters. The UI attracted me in the first sight (even the main menu screen is beautiful to me).
    _ The flow of the whole game makes me feel like watching a movie while being able to control the combat. Somehow gentle, nostalgic, sad and joy.
    _ Grinding items is not important. Level and skill system are good, these could be rebalanced to bring them further.
    _ The story translation is very close to the original. I very enjoy listening while reading the sub.
    Bad:
    _ Almost no other contents except: the main story, combat, side story and some important quest. Everything is so solid like a normal house with all necessary things to live, but having no toys. And again, the price really fit it, I would happy to pay more for additional contents.
    _ The game should have more challenging difficulties.
    _ Some item translation is suck.

  • @seanbcusack
    @seanbcusack 3 года назад +1

    What, the Evangelionesque ending didn't do it for you? Maybe it should have been a powerpoint slideshow. ;-)
    Normal was too easy but hard is friggin hard. You have to 100% the thing to survive the last few bosses at all. If you're dying for a challenge in a battle system you like, give that a shot. You will need to upgrade every shard to max and really strategize what skills you put everything on, or the bosses, and some random mob trash, will eat your lunch. You'll also need to make use of the perfect block, too.
    Otherwise generally agree. I liked the game but it had a lot of dragging spots throughout it. I got it on 50% PSN sale and I think I got my money's worth at least.

    Your comments about lack of depth pretty much hit the nail on the head. Most of the game lacks depth. I would have enjoyed it more if you could have explored segments of town, had more meaningful sidequests, and had more complex dungeons with treasures you might actually care about.

  • @irpacynot
    @irpacynot 6 лет назад +2

    So, if you don't level up through battles but rather through relationships, does that make random battles pointless, or is there still incentive to do random battles?
    P.S. -- They actually used the correct form of the possessive (both plural and singular) of "ally" in each case, so far as I can tell.

    • @TarksGauntlet
      @TarksGauntlet  6 лет назад +1

      The only incentive to doing battles is to gain materials for a very shallow crafting system I didn't cover in the video (Video was already long enough) and to finish numerous amounts of "Kill X amount of Enemy type" quests which ultimately progress the game.
      Also, On the "Ally's" thing: I did definitely second guess this myself and wondered if I should even include this. Tried googling but couldn't find anything. This isn't the only place this happened though, I think I just picked bad screens not realize in these ones that one is plural and the other possessive. But that aside I think the rest of the section speaks for itself haha. I screen capped so much shotty translation in this game haha.

    • @irpacynot
      @irpacynot 6 лет назад +2

      Well, it says a lot about the quality of the battles if there's no real reward other than the enjoyment of the battles themselves.

      You get stuff from governments if you kill stuff for them in the Firaxis XCOM games. If you think of "levels" in the Blue Reflection games as an approximation of resource rewards and not an analogue of experience, then I guess it makes some modicum of sense.

    awwwwwwww kitty. I'd still be willing to give the game a try despite its shortcomings. I'm actually quite amazed with the games visual aesthetic. It appeals to me in a variety of ways and I love the modified grandia battle system that this system used for its turn based battle system. They coulda based the systems off of the national panic levels seen in XCOM instead.
      Simply have the new relationship things start at "neutral", and able to get better or worse depending on any actions the player takes.
      Effects? Better relations net you more stuff to fight with, neutral nets you nothing, and bad ones make it harder or impossible for relations to be salvaged.

    But it looks sooooooo pretty though. Sadly, I don't think I can play this game. No matter how good the combat is, the crappy sounding level up system sounds like it outright discourages combat. Sounds real sucky to me.

    Would you be curious if I told you this game's story/plot is based on a true story? Well, a true story yet to unfold that is. If you want to know more look up some info about something called a "fear parasite" also known as an "energy vampire".

    I like how you took the time to talk over the battle system in your review. So many reviews are pointless because they don't go into that stuff in any detail. As well taking a minute to talk about the asinine idea some JRPG fans have about "pure translations" shows you're a person who sees those childish complaints as what they are.
    The JRPG community is really in a dark place: people have no idea what a good game is and the fandom is so niche larger review outlets often don't take the time to go into what it takes to bring these games over. As it stands most fans have no basis for understanding the efforts that go into localization and what audience these games were originally intended for. Most JRPGs are really more like budget titles and not worth getting excited over and the producers of these games are more like B movie creators--localization teams just create functional products for foreign market distributors to sell while little influence from foreign markets, in terms of taste or quality, find their way to the actual developers. In the end the community is a fandom without a voice in many ways. However, good reviews are a good start at trying to improve this at least in terms of not buying garbage titles.

    Yeah, the game has some problems? So has Persona 5 or 4 and 3 for that matter.
    In fact that game is what P5 had should be.
    Pacing between Story and Gameplay is just right and it doesn't overstay its welcome.
    ...Yeah I know this game has issues, but no game made me so happy this year and that has nothing to do with the excessive fanservice but about the story and character which are all about empathy.
    And empathy is the one think this world needs so much more.

    • @TarksGauntlet
      @TarksGauntlet  6 лет назад

      Well I definitely don't agree with your take on the pace. I thought the pace was awful, but this just highlights the subjective nature of it all. Despite it's flaws though it is a game I can say I enjoyed and recommend to others so long as they know what they're getting into.

      I know this is 2 years but Persona 5 blows this outta the water. But that's mainly because Persona 5 had the benefit of being in a long standing series and getting better over time so it's not to take anything away from this game.

      Dude.. Did you rage quit folklore?
      I really wanted to like that game but after 6 hours I just couldn't do any more haha.
      And hey, if the game looks good wait for a sale. It's really hard to express while honestly addressing all the faults but the game does have some good fun. Just blitz your way through the filler and you can come out of it pretty sane. Mind you the filler is 70% of the game, but on a sale that might be worth it.

    • @evil_cupcake2386
      @evil_cupcake2386 6 лет назад

      I think I get Blue Reflection when it's going to be on sale, cause it really have something why I want to play this game.
      As for Folklore I didn't actually rage quit, I got to chapter 3 with the guy and to chapter 4 with the girl. But it was soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo boring. The game have great visuals and not really bad combat, but the story and the characters is so boring and sometimes illogical. I think I'll complete it a little later.
      And besides when I completed chapter 4 with the girl, I finally got my box with Ys VIII, and why the hell I should play the boring game, when I have one of the best Action RPG in the world? I actually completed Ys VIII yesterday, spent on it 75 hours and almost got Platinum trophy, and it was amazing. Can't say Ys VIII don't have flaws, and can't say that it's legit game of the year, but it was one of the best games of this year FOR ME. Good story, nice characters, even though they are not very unique, amazingly fun combat, awesome music and just a ton of fun in general. It's not The best Action RPG, but it's definitely one of the best and best game in the series.

    • @TarksGauntlet
      @TarksGauntlet  6 лет назад

      I heard Ys8 has a couple issues with items being translated wrong and telling you they do something that they don't actually do so I might wait until the re-translation is done.
      As for folklore, I can't remember how far I made it but yeah, boring is about right. Nights of Azure had a similar battle system but allowed the player a bit more agency to actually take part in battle. Much better for me.

    • @evil_cupcake2386
      @evil_cupcake2386 6 лет назад

      About translation in Ys VIII, I can't actually tell about critical errors, english is not my main language, but I think I saw some strange moments. But that was not that often and again I don't know english that good. But there wasn't translation issues with items, not that I recall at least, every item did what it was said it was doing. But yeah, better to wait translation patch. I just couldn't wait to play this game :)
      And about Nights of Azure, I still don't know if it worth to buy, because I heard it have repetitive gameplay. But if the story is actually good, I might forgive this. Hell, I beat Drakengard 3 on Platinum trophy, and that was so fucking bad as a game, because the story was actually interesting.
