The snake eyes for the brake lights on the dash is a cool throwback. I remember my grandpas 76 Cadillac eldarado had them above the rear window and you saw them in the rear view mirror to make sure your brake lights work
The warning label on the wireless charger is to let you know that it can wipe your cards' chips and mag strips. One other example I can think of: Volvo doesn't have a warning sticker, but they have a notification in the infotainment system that pops up whenever you activate the wireless charger.
I appreciate Toyota keeping the rear glass separate on real SUVs for all these years. Drives me crazy that's nit a standard thing in all hatchback vehicles. Makes it much easier to carry longer items.
And pack. My old 4 Door S10 Blazer had a separate glass, we would load bulky items into the hatch with the full gate open, close the gate and then open the glass and keep packing it up to the roof, then put whatever didn't fit inside on the roof. Packed a family of 4+ our dog into that thing for a week out camping when I was a kid. Did the same thing when it became mine.
Honesty, this is a great interpretation of what the modern Land Cruiser always should have been. So happy Lexus decided to go with 18'' wheels and the bigger tires on this model. Just adds to the vintage look of a rugged off-roader. I can still remember the days with my 79 LC FJ40 and 15" wagon wheels on off-road tires. Just so appealing this modern day age of bigger wheels and tires.

21:08 the editor is absolutely right, it is the Land Cruiser Prado that this new J250 LC is replacing not the 200 series Americans know and love. That 200 series was rather replaced by the 300 which Americans don't get but is sold around the world. Just see this as you getting the LC Prado in it's latest generation
Thats exactly what ive been saying since they announced "the new LC", americans get fooled and believe so anything so easy. The best thing is in my country we get all these Toyota SUVS, LC300, Prado, Fortuner and new Sequoia.
Lexus really nailed the design and futures with the new GX. It looks like a legit competitor to LC, 4Runner, maybe even G-wagon in a way. Hopefully this model drives the prices of the old V8 models down.
You should understand this car has never been about Lexus. The big seller is the Land Cruiser Prado sold overseas, which is the one its always shared its platform with. The GX will always be whatever Toyota wants the Prado to be.
love the way Doug describes anything related to off road, or rough and tough etc. clearly he finds the concept of the outdoors, beyond an urban environment to be a funny and quaint notion that is to be spoken about as such.
The red lights in the gauge are mostly used to emphasize when the car is breaking on it's on using the Proactive Driving Assist which will actively slow down while driving, but not to a full stop
Doug, the problem with your recommendations over gx (velar, x5, q5, etc) is that I would never buy any of these. Their depreciation is atrocious and reliability after warranty expires is questionable. The TX, sure, but that’s sacrificing too much cool factor for me and I don’t need a giant third row.
exactly and all the electric vehicles he reviews, which I never watch because they will fail, economics 101 is sell a product the consumers want. Electric vehicles sit on the lots. Doug quit reviewing them! batteries mined by slaved kids on a power grid that will never ever handle the power demands of a 1st world country.
Yes it's funny - compared to the Gen 4 Discovery, the current Defender or the Bronco (which all look like they have been designed by Playmobil) this Lexus looks pretty normal. Even in comparison with its older enormous mouthed siblings.
I think the image when you call out the Lexus TX is actually the Lexus RX. Also the Land Cruiser image that was used is the Land Cruiser Prado, which was not available in the US and is the same size as the GX. I think that was intended to be the actual 2021 US Land Cruiser.
My 2023 Lexus has that weird bubble camera, but also changes to a different view that gradually pans around you and shows you what all the cameras are seeing. It's pretty much useless, but the overhead view accompanying the backup cam is pretty nice.
Hi Doug! I already watched this guy on your buddies channel Throttle House and after watching your video, the car only grows up on me. I think the design is truly superb and tough looking and despite it isn't as comfortable as some rivals, the looks in my opinion make the car a winner. I'm sure that if you own one of this, you are going to smile every time you get close. to it to take it for a ride. Other than that, not many cars have the fabulous off road capabilities of any of these Toyota group SUV's. So yes I'm sure that for a significant group of guys looking for something powerful looking and capable, this will be a very good choice. Thanks for another great vid Doug. All the best as always from West Spain 😊
I think it looks bad, maybe a bit too upright and Land Rover-esque, especially when you take it side by side with the J150 Prado, which I think is gorgeous
You aren't getting the "Land Crusier", you're getting what we in Australasia call the LC Prado as the Land Cruiser and Lexus GX has always been technically different. This GX actually shares the powertrain of the Land Crusier 300 Series on smaller platform, which I assumed you would know as you own a true Land Crusier in the 200 Series.
this is what people should realize lmao. the Land Cruiser 250 the Americans will get is actually the Land Cruiser Prado. The actual descendant of the Land Cruiser most people know is the 300 series, which wouldn't be sold in America.
He knows the 300 series exists because he reviewed an imported model and has previously stated his disappointment in it not being available in his market. Doug does get stuff wrong in his videos frustratingly often, but this time it's more likely he didn't mention it to not overcomplicate things, since the 250 series LC Prado is simply called the LandCruiser in North America. This likely (or hopefully) _will_ come up when he eventually reviews the LandCruiser 250.
Maybe those 2 red lights on the instrument cluster coinciding with the brake lights are to let you know that your brake lights are working? Like if they dissappear from the display you have a brake light out? Actually a good idea.
Nice review! I had 2003 and that was the first year they came out here. Saw the new one at the Auto Show and it was nice but for the Overtrail trim they used all of the high gloss, high scratch materials around the wheels and in front of the windshield which was already scratched up at the Auto Show. Other than that very cool.
Doug is literally the only reviewer that hasn't glowed over this thing. Throttle House said that it was a 10 out of 10 and that "they didn't f it up". The fact that you rate it below the Defender shows some implicit, unwarranted bias. For $20k less than the Defender you get more vehicle. More reliability, more capability (because you're not stuck with stupid small tire walls) and a better looking rig overall.
Better looking than a defender is rich. Also, the prices aren’t all that different, and you get so much more in terms of ride quality, performance (speed, handling, etc.), and luxury features. After all, 90% of your time driving is on the road.
Sure, Lexus is more reliable, but reliability isn’t the only important thing in a car. That interior is still extremely dated, the body-on-frame is mostly a cost saving measure (considering how few Lexuses actually go off road), and they’re woefully underpowered for the price.
Love my 460, probably will be driving it 15 years from now too. 0 dealer trips in the amount of time and mileage I'd taken my previous Ford in 4x for stuff other than maintenance
Would assume the main function of the brake light indicator in the dash is when you use the auto crawl control function it tells you when the car is braking?
I'm glad that the Overtrail trim doesn't have a third row. I've never used the third row in my 200 Series Land Cruiser. I do take my SUVs offroad and I prefer to have the extra cargo space that it has without the third row. I don't understand why people are so obsessed with third rows as they hardly ever use them. As for the acceleration, it is mid 6 seconds 0-60. That is plenty fast. It's 5,500 lb SUV. It doesn't have to be sports-car fast. My criticism is more that the fuel econmy isn't great.
9:45 You don’t need a 12V cigarette style plug as a phone charger as there are two USB C ports integrated directly into the console right above your finger. Which is why they hid the 12V port for only special use cases.
Most of us 4runner guys use the 12v port to power handheld comms as to not kill the radios battery when driving. Throw a $30 antenna on the top of the truck and an external PTT mic, and you have a very economical way of communicating with anyone around.
The 12v cigarette style outlets are super crappy. It's literally technology that has gone mostly unchanged since 1930. They're terrible to use. Why hasn't the industry adopted a better 12v port?
Wow, did you come up with that painfully obvious observation all on your own or did one of your fellow mental patients share it with you? Almost laughable that a few hundred of your fellow village idiots have already made this same comment. How pathetic your life must be. Sad.
3:40 There has never been a hybrid GX so far. I honestly really dislike the new turbo offering - seems a hell of a lot harder to wrench on it yourself compared to the 4.7 and 4.6 liter V8s of previous generations.

Well no third row for the Overtrail model kinda makes sense. It's likely people will install sleeping and storage platforms anyways, and go overlanding.
I'd be ok if he said 'not as refined', harsh is a strong word and I'm not taking it, this one has the 35 inch tire with 18inch wheel, so the ride should be ok, the luxury trim has the 22'' wheel will definitely feel more harshness.

One other example I can think of: Volvo doesn't have a warning sticker, but they have a notification in the infotainment system that pops up whenever you activate the wireless charger.
it's so cool that it's still body on frame with a real transfer case
Is Lexus GX capable of doing engine swaps?

By the way: that climate concierge works fantastically! Worked at a Lexus dealership here in Germany a few years ago and all customers who got that told us that it was an absolute selling point for Lexus, so was the Mark Levinson sound system and the attention to detail
I've seen a bunch of videos on the 2024 Lexus GX but I know Doug is going to show me many things all those other reviews missed!
Doug is the kind of guy that points at 9 rectangles and says "6 rectangles".
It should've been 11 rectangles.
Looks like an awesome and capable truck! I look forward to seeing it in a Costco parking lot near me.
This is what Toyota Tahara makes. This is a twin turbo V6 4 runner / land cruiser. 4 runner, land cruiser & gx550 are all built in the legendary Tahara factory. They all have that body on frame driving charm but it’s not for everyone.
Lexus NX - Toyota Rav4
Lexus RX - Toyota Highlander
Lexus TX - Toyota Grand Highlander
Lexus GX - Toyota Landcruiser
Lexus LX, Toyota Sequoia, and Toyota 4Runner stand on their own
Have a gx and he’s not lying when people go out of their way to talk about it/ address it. They all love it
This is way better than a Defender. You can actually take it overlanding and not worry about your car breaking down

@@th003g and 1 in 200 buyers will take their defenders off road

Defender has more space and tons of more engine options
You still haven't reviewed the old GX!! Come on Doug!
21:09 that’s a Landcruiser Prado, completely model different from a Landcruiser.
This took me back to last year when I was exploring 70s anime. Plus I love driving in the night on my Miata just enjoying the scenery with the top off while these play in the background
I love it! Our family ride is a '18 GX460 and it's such a great truck. Dead reliable etc. my only disappointment here is I really like the "gate" rear door on the previous generation as opposed to the hatch on this one. By no means a deal breaker, really nice job from Toyota/Lexus here 👍
Lexus has done it again....👌
I agree. A winner for sure.
W
Another BIG W for Lexus.😊
Make another bland car?
@@jonbar140 if you're calling reliable and trustworthy bland, than yes.
I’m so glad to see the new design approach that lexus-toyota is taking
Another Fantastic Review! Thanks Doug,
I’m glad to see that it has cornering lamps! Cornering lamps should be standard on all high end vehicles.
I love the way it looks. not cartoonish to me at all. Just needs another set of tires.
Doug had 3 opportunities to say the correct amount of rectangles🤣
Lexus really nailed the design and futures with the new GX. It looks like a legit competitor to LC, 4Runner, maybe even G-wagon in a way. Hopefully this model drives the prices of the old V8 models down.
You should understand this car has never been about Lexus. The big seller is the Land Cruiser Prado sold overseas, which is the one its always shared its platform with. The GX will always be whatever Toyota wants the Prado to be.
Nope, this will drive the prices of the V8 up.

love the way Doug describes anything related to off road, or rough and tough etc. clearly he finds the concept of the outdoors, beyond an urban environment to be a funny and quaint notion that is to be spoken about as such.
Missed quirk: The nine rectangles on the front seats symbolizes the design of the front grille!
I think you mean 6. 😂😂
I didn’t know my ‘04 GX was a pre-production model.
Lol it's amazing that Doug doesn't fact check himself
We had the 03 super concept spy car apparently
I assume brake lights on the dash in order to see when self driving features use the brakes
The red lights in the gauge are mostly used to emphasize when the car is breaking on it's on using the Proactive Driving Assist which will actively slow down while driving, but not to a full stop
Missed quirk opportunity to talk about the sticker in the Cool Box that says “No fish and no meat” with icons.😃
The Land Cruiser version of this is going to he hugely popular, as usual.
If this is over the top and cartoonish than what is the cybertruck 😂
This man hates on Lexus but will dickride BWM and Mercedes all day
exactly and all the electric vehicles he reviews, which I never watch because they will fail, economics 101 is sell a product the consumers want. Electric vehicles sit on the lots. Doug quit reviewing them! batteries mined by slaved kids on a power grid that will never ever handle the power demands of a 1st world country.
But the Cybertruck comes with a TapOut t-shirt and a fake gold chain to wear outside your shirt…so there’s that.
@@briangonzalez8514If this video is hating on Lexus then you really haven't seen his videos on BMW have you?
Yes it's funny - compared to the Gen 4 Discovery, the current Defender or the Bronco (which all look like they have been designed by Playmobil) this Lexus looks pretty normal.
Even in comparison with its older enormous mouthed siblings.
I had a 2011 X5M. That truck went off road in Idaho!!!. Through snow mud and fishing trails. It went everywhere
10:45 I mean, you COULD remove the label with a credit card and some isopropyl alcohol. It's just a sticker, after all.
The brawny exterior vibe reminded me of my 2004 V8 4Runner I had for many years
Thank you Doug and your cameraman for using the correct FPS camera to show the lights and HUD!
I love the masculinity of the GX personally. It gives it a rugged badass look to it.
The look of the Lexus GX at the front looks like Tuned Muscle Car from Burnout 3.
I think it looks bad, maybe a bit too upright and Land Rover-esque, especially when you take it side by side with the J150 Prado, which I think is gorgeous
@@isaac4273 I can see that for sure bit to each his own.
7 month back order for these. I love the way they look.
He explains this he just doesn’t use the 300/200/prado nomenclature
He knows the 300 series exists because he reviewed an imported model and has previously stated his disappointment in it not being available in his market.
Doug does get stuff wrong in his videos frustratingly often, but this time it's more likely he didn't mention it to not overcomplicate things, since the 250 series LC Prado is simply called the LandCruiser in North America. This likely (or hopefully) _will_ come up when he eventually reviews the LandCruiser 250.
If I had to live with one car for my whole life THIS would be that car.
Maybe those 2 red lights on the instrument cluster coinciding with the brake lights are to let you know that your brake lights are working? Like if they dissappear from the display you have a brake light out? Actually a good idea.
It's not cartoony it's perfect styling
Compared to other cars on the market, it looks pretty normal to me 🤷♂️
Doug just hates Lexus.
We’ve waited like 20 years for SUVs to look like SUV, not egg shaped mom mobiles or lesbian toasters.
@@RootBeerGMT the previous gen sold pretty well among men. It's about 60/40 male to female here in chicago and surrounding burbs.
Interior is a big disappointment tho! Zero styling cues from the exterior brought inside.
That surround camera is actually quite useful if you want to know if anyone or anything is right around the vehicle before you start to drive.
It's hot garbage compared to everyone else's surround view camera or 360 spin function.
I would love to see Doug review the old GX and compare it to the new GX 550.
Looking forward to your 2024 Land Cruiser showcase!🎉🎉
Doug is literally the only reviewer that hasn't glowed over this thing. Throttle House said that it was a 10 out of 10 and that "they didn't f it up". The fact that you rate it below the Defender shows some implicit, unwarranted bias. For $20k less than the Defender you get more vehicle. More reliability, more capability (because you're not stuck with stupid small tire walls) and a better looking rig overall.
I'm sorry did you really put reliability & Defender in same room?? Lexus's go 300,000 miles At Least!
Doug’s the type of guy to say get the Lexus to and show the RX
Correct....if you're just mall crawling.😂
The 12v cigarette style outlets are super crappy. It's literally technology that has gone mostly unchanged since 1930. They're terrible to use. Why hasn't the industry adopted a better 12v port?
10:09 idk looks like 9 rectangles to me doug

3:40 There has never been a hybrid GX so far.
I honestly really dislike the new turbo offering - seems a hell of a lot harder to wrench on it yourself compared to the 4.7 and 4.6 liter V8s of previous generations.
that cornering light reminds me of a 1980s Crown Victoria. 😊
I wonder if the Overtrail doesn’t have a 3rd row because the diff / transfer case / suspension hardware gets in the way?

How pathetic repeating the same painfully obvious observation as a few hundred of Doug’s lowest IQ viewers. Grow up and go away.
Well no third row for the Overtrail model kinda makes sense. It's likely people will install sleeping and storage platforms anyways, and go overlanding.
Love the new design. Thank the LORD they tamed that grill. The price seems very reasonable for the current economy.
The pen holder is a grab handle for the passenger for when you are off-road
I've driven an old Toyota Prado (the 2002 model), and if the ride in this is any bit comparable, then calling it harsh is a little absurd.
I'd be ok if he said 'not as refined', harsh is a strong word and I'm not taking it, this one has the 35 inch tire with 18inch wheel, so the ride should be ok, the luxury trim has the 22'' wheel will definitely feel more harshness.
