Awesome song played on an awesome banjo by and awesome banjo player. Lots of drop thumb on this song, but I have a stupid question for Clifton. Are you doing this in your usual two finger style or in a more traditional claw hammer style?
Both styles are traditional. Here I'm using the old down-picking style that was known as hoedown, dropthumb, overhand, and various other names. Folklorists from the urban northeast dubbed the style "clawhammer" around 1965.
Guess it's about time I learned this bangin song. Super easy with ALL my favorite fretless licks. So I finally got my hands on Around the Bend and it was everything I've been hoping for all these years. I had to buy it off Ebay and watch it over at my father in-law's house because he's the only person I know with a DVD player. I threatened to upload it to Pirate Bay on a trailer video here on YT, which Folkways noticed and responded by fixing their site so the public can finally buy it off the official site now! It's is a solid conclusion to Mike's long and storied career and I appreciate the context you offered around German War. If you play old time banjo, go buy Around the Bend from Folkways.
It’s been about two years since I’ve come across your work, and I can only say thank you for bringing a part of our history to light in such a beautiful way.
Did you get this banjo back or is this an old video? This looks like that old banjo you had a while back that you sold on consignment for that guy that choked on a sausage.
Thanks, I haven't played boatmen in a long time. I'm supposed to be plowing ground, instead I'm playing boatman. It's so much fun I'll never get my work done.
Great song. I liked your 1st version with the guard banjo, it seemed to fit this song. I can't play instruments to save my life. Maybe the devils hand or I'm just not talented most likely. 😅 I admire your skills.
Love it also appreciate your history of the banjo i was telling someone it use to be a gourd and a stick with strings and some skin streached over the gourd and that was your first banjo
Love the tune Clifton, and that old banjo has a lovely sweet sound to it. I have a question regarding your tuning. I know you recommend tuning down to better suit singing along; this seems like great advice for someone playing solo, which is what I want to do most, but what do you do if/when you're playing with other instrumentalists?
Nothing against this musician or music. But I prefer an akonting. In terms of archiving music. history. If you don't share the context of the songs and what labor and people it grew from. $hit just seem hokie.

Definitely adding this to my backpack of folk songs for when I go off to school. I’m bringing my clothes, books, and my mountain banjo. All I need.

I'll either tune to them, or they'll tune to me.

Huge fan of yours, where do you go about sourcing older style banjos? I am about to invest in one
Look up antique banjos for sale on the internet. Recently bought a George Dobson doing this. Be prepared to spend some money, however.
Coolest banjo ever, by far
nice
Love it! I have this on an LP I got years ago called The Early Minstrel Show. Some great fiddle and banjo on that

Love it Clifton! I think that's the first fretless banjo I've ever seen with a resonator.

It could just be me or the nylon strings, but it sounds out of tune. Still very good though.
Cheers Clifton 😊
Your music is awesome
