I learned "Boatman" (De Boatmen Dance) from a recording of Melvin Wine playing it on fiddle. My instrument is a custom 1867 Dobson banjo tuned ~ gDGBD.

i think this is my favorite song i've seen you play and sing. i can't stop listening to it.
My father was lovingly known as “Boatmin” or “OBM” (ol’ boatmin) as he was an old white bearded man living on a boat. I grew up on a sailboat until about 8 and moved back onto a boat with him sophomore year of highschool until my early 20s.
As is life, my ol’ boatmin father passed away 2008 shortly after his 2 birds of sons left the nest. I immediately shared this song with an old friend who came up with the “OBM” term for my dad to much agreement.
I really need to pick up a banjo again.
I did it for a short-year long ago. Life had its Storm and I wonder where it is now. 🤔
Had my tuner n’ all. I wonder…
I absolutely cannot believe that you have created this video. One of my absolute favorite songs - on the exact instrument and style which I am learning!
I love this more than the modern banjo. I love the fretless sound. I play the oud.
Best Patreon membership, bar none. Bunch of content and music.
Fretless gut string with resonator. Very different and beautiful!
Sounds immaculate on that instrument!
Yew ! ⚓
Perfect for a Sunday morning.
Thanks Mr. Hicks
Finally starting to learn this one! Great tutorial, such a fun song.
Love the old resonator banjo!
Thanks Clif! Great lesson, that old banjo sounds lovely. He's right about the community, great bunch of people!
Cool tune, easy to learn. It's similar to cripple creek, and more fun to play.
I hadn't noticed that but you're right. It may be that "Cripple Creek" comes from "Boatman."
@@CliftonHicksbanjo Wouldn't surprise me, they're very similar! Same notes. I like the syncopation and slides in "Boatman."
Yeah I think Boatman is better. Never really got into Cripple Creek, although it was the first tune I learned when I was 13 trying to play like Earl Scruggs.
@@CliftonHicksbanjo Same, it's one of those songs that everyone learns first and over plays, like Angeline the Baker, though Tommy Jarrell's, and Stringbean's versions are pretty damn good. Boatman is the superior melody for sure though.
Beautiful melody
Beautiful old banjo 😍🪕‼️Great tune, your singing is damned fine!!
Awesome video lesson! Instant fan here!
Great lesson, and beautiful old banjo !
Just pure awesomeness!
Great little lesson. Someday I'll get good at playing the darn thing. On a side note, I see them multicam pants, the pattern works very well in the Fall here in GA.
Great music great lesson Thank very much ! martin
Thanks, Clifton!
I’ve been missing videos by the fire!!! Guess it’s already that time of year... I hope you, Robyn and the pups have a nice holiday season. Thank you for so many hours of music and lessons! 🧡🤎
Priceless! - I watched a second time, and I can't stop dancing. Something's going on here, and I think it's good whatever it is. Happy dancing music?
Absolutely beautiful instrument, looks straight out of a Jules Verne novel.
Sounds great, too. xP
Awesome
That was freaking amazing;)
Thanks for the lesson:)
Keep up the great work sir.
Thanks Cliff
Love it!
Great video. I wanted to tune my banjo down to match yours because it makes it easier to learn if i can do so both by eye and by ear simultaneously - matching my hands to yours while being in a different root makes it tougher. So, if anyone else feels that way, I'll save you some time and tell you Clifton is just about in Eb here (eb-Bb-Eb-G-Bb). It's not exactly there but that's the closest you can get without microtuning :) its probably just a handful of cents off.
Thank you always for your informative and fun videos. Where do you find the songs like this I only know your common jam session songs, cripple creek, Angeline the baker Etc. Etc. What are some of your favorites you have videos for that we should consider learning.
Great man, I follow you.
Where is the banjo listed for sale ?
It's not listed anywhere. Email me at clifhicks@gmail.com to inquire.
Where can I find the banjos you sell?
Email me at clifhicks@gmail.com

I order individual strings from LaBella.com
the exact tuning he is in is d#A#D#GA#
Leaner and meaner by the video ! Not long and I'll only recognize you by your singing voice.... Lol. You gotta let me in on that bad ass diet your on so I can get healthy too.
Low-fat, high-fiber vegan since 2016.
@@CliftonHicksbanjo What foods do your rely on to obtain the majority of your protein intake?
Protein is everywhere: beans, peas, spinach, cauliflower, mushrooms, avocados, bananas, melons, peanuts, blackberries, raspberries, broccoli, corn, asparagus...
Love this one
Cliff, have you or would you ever do this music on an electric instrument with effects pedals and stuff like that? I think that might sound pretty good.
I have played electric guitars before. I especially enjoy playing 5-string electric bass.
@@CliftonHicksbanjo You got any of that online we can hear?
I like a Banjo at,,,B.R. 549. 😁👍🪕
Love it!
