The only thing I could ever see tipping at Starbucks (or any coffee shop) or Subway (or any sandwich place) is if I am getting a catering order. They usually need 1 to 2 days notice and I’m spending a lot. They are working really hard to fulfill it so maybe I’ll tip then. However, even then it’s not a requirement because you’re picking it up anyway.

that's why I always cash it, even if for just the tip. I just don't go to plastic only establishments. even there servers will appreciate cash which will bypass the system and be happy with a "normal" tip. example- 2:10 means +$16 cash from me if service is not screwed up😎

That is why so many restaurants go out of business. People would rather eat at home. They also then know what they are eating and that the kitchen is clean.
Tipping in the US should be optional, but servers only make 1/2 of minimum wage. If they weren't taxed on their tips and the tips weren't counted to make up the gap between what they are paid and minimum wage, then their employers would actually have to pay a livable wage. However, it is reasoned (at least in Maine) that your tips make up that difference from what you are paid to minimum wage. So tips aren't tips if they actually make the minimum wage for the employee. It is the business and business practices that need changing. Lastly in some businesses the front of house (servers) have to tip out the bartender and the back of house (aka cooks ect) when the back of house is paid at least minimum wage to begin with. Restaurant in America got it wrong. The customers and staff should NOT have to supplement employees wages.

Went to get a haircut the first tip starts at 20% then 30 then 40, there was a custom button and gave 5 bucks. Sheesh. My haircut was 22 bucks btw

I often leave random coupons that I've clipped in leu of a tip. Save 50¢ on paper towels. $1 off mayonnaise. My tips are more valuable than cash
