    I still have the four box sets 😁 I remember it took me forever to find the Thunder Rift setting. I had all of adventures…though some of those disappeared.
    The Basic D&D Dungeon Master Screen also came with an adventure “Escape from Thunder Rift”.

      I've run quest for the Silver Sword. I'd definitely take some time to spice it up. If you run Zanzer's Dungeon first, the Elven Prince should be the rescued Elven Princess's betrothed; you can say that she was investigating his disappearance when she was kidnapped, and that she last heard he was on a quest for his family's ancient sword, and that she last heard he was heading for this adventure's town. Now you have a reason why the adventure is called quest for the silver sword; it wasn't the player's quest, it was his!

    This was actually one of the first modules I ever ran. I bought the RC and a bunch of adventures from a friend of my older sisters. He literally only had them for a short period before selling them on (for some reason), probably, since I later played with friends of his, he wanted to try his hands at DMing but everyone was into 2e.
    Honestly, I got into 2e within the year as well, but I still enjoyed a lot of the materials from the RC (domain rules, mass combat, etc). Now, it is one of my favorite editions of the game, if not *the* favorite.
    As for the adventure itself, I don't remember all the details (over 30 years on), but I remember the party's fighter getting killed on the encounter with the wererat.
    They did at the time sell an accessory of just those standup figures, which I had, so with this, Sword & Shield and Rage of the Rakasta, I remember having a bunch. That being said, we usually wound up playing more theater of the mind style, so they didn't get massive use, but did come out when we really needed to clarify things.

    "the only way to open it is with the azure crystal key..." No. Third level magic-users can have access to *knock,* and if they do, it's a great use of the spell since the strongbox can be transported out of the keep and *knocked* during a resting period. *Knock* isn't as flashy as *invisibility* or *ESP* so when a player has chosen/rolled that as his spell, the strongbox represents a huge opportunity to make that player feel valuable and special. Love your players, people. It makes your ultimate murder of their characters much more satisfying. :p

    I remember owning "The New, Easy to Master" D&D Box Set. It was rather impressive compared to the regular rulebooks. That map, those cardboard standup figures and the quick play guide handouts made me think TSR was trying to compete with HeroQuest. I thought the content was a little basic compared to my Rules Cyclopedia.

    Hey Captaincorjas, great video as always, really liked the 3D layout. I do believe sir you have some misconception about this module. The picture on the cover is the spider lair, the silver sword is a legendary sword of the elves and it is part of the magic that is making the area cold, this is the ratlings only appearance in a module (ratlings are mongrels), the spitting beetle later became the fire beetle (we actually got evolution in our D&D game), the White Widow Spider is another rare creature only found in this module. The adventure itself can be used to start an adventure, side quest, one-shot, or launching a campaign, it can be whatever you want it to be, can't do that with every adventure. The creatures, treasure, traps and story are all rock solid. Just the fact that ratlings have so many different pets makes them a very dangerous foe. Loved the artwork it fits for the time period and reminds of old school AD&D, gotta love pencil art. The map is wide open to explore, speaking of the map that comes with this adventure, did you notice that the silver sword is at the bottom of the map, it's what holding the map open. This adventure this module is truly a classic! It's a shame you gave it such a low rating just because people will look upon your score and take it to heart but really they are going to miss out on what this module really has to offer.
    Thanks for the video you have a wonderful day!

    • @captcorajus
      @captcorajus  Год назад +1

      Trust me when I say, I have absolutely no misconceptions whatsoever. The SPider layer is in the tower. You can see what a appears to be a gelatinous cube in the background, and that's in the ballroom... but the cover is crazy ambiguous about what scene is being depicted, which is typical for TSR.
      Not sure if you watched then entire video because I covered it being either the first module for new players, or any number of possible ways to use it.
      I didn't give it a low rating. I gave it a good. I'm running it this weekend myself as a one shot for my group. But IMHO, calling the module the 'Quest for the Silver Sword" when you are questing to remove the curse of winter, and you can't even use the aforementioned silver sword to do that.. seems weird. But thanks for the comment!

    • @mattnerdy7236
      @mattnerdy7236 Год назад +1

      @@captcorajus well of course I watched the whole video, I knew it was one of lairs my mistake. Just because you quest for a item or solution doesn't mean you get to keep it, plus the owner is their looking at you. A low level party getting to see not keep a legendary item makes for quite the tale. Just seemed to me at one point you just starting selling it short. To me good is what a step away from so-so, and your running it this weekend. For a so-so adventure seems to me it's getting a lot of attention, lol. Thanks again you have a wonderful day!

    • @captcorajus
      @captcorajus  Год назад +1

      @@mattnerdy7236 I think I have a pretty good argument for critiquing the module on its title.
      No one EVER quests for the 'Silver Sword', because until they get to the final 'boss' room no one even knows it exists. AND even once they know what it is, no one, but the 'weakened' and unable to fight Elladrin can weird it, as it would slip from their hand.
      So there's never a 'quest' for the silver sword. :)

    One feature of several of these, though not all, was that they were written to be played solo or DM-less. This also doubled as a guide for new DMs, as for options of what could happen if...
    One of the "holy grails" of the solo play community is to play through classic modules. A restatement of those modules, following the methods used in these could open up that, if someone would do that. (Hint hint)

      If you judge them strictly as written, they're functional. They are definitely not on the level of say.. Keep on the Borderlands. However, keeping in mind, these were meant for young, 10 year olds to LEARN the game and run, then they are gold.
      There are basic plots, and plenty of 'eye candy' with the stand ups, cardstock props and poster map dungeons. GREAT for getting younger players to the game IMHO. Fun for older players too, IF you do the work.

    First- great video!
    I had moved away from D&D/AD&D by 1992 so never got the chance to work with this series. Quest for the Silver Sword does seem very new player/DM friendly, but it does not seem to have the replay value of the classic starter modules like Keep on the borderlands or Village of Hommlet. Keep on the borderlands in particular has seen several iterations at my gaming table over the years including once with GURPS. I will tell you now that facing 20 goblins is a whole different experience when using GURPS. lol
    I do have a general question about the dwarven forge 3D terrain. What is the attraction? I honestly don't see the point. Drawing maps on a classic square or hex mat has always yielded far more versatility at the table for me. I don't want to start an argument I'm just asking. :)
    BTW: The 3D terrain looks cool. I have been a wargamer since the early 90s so I can appreciate the amount of work that goes into it.
