Did you notice that Kitty Carlisle had a good time on this particular show. You could hear her laughing a lot. Mr. Boyington was a courageous brave man. Thanks for the video.
Kitty bouncing up and down in her seat after correctly guessing Eamonn was absolutely adorable! Her and Arlene Francis were such classy ladies with a palpable joie de vivre.
I was surprised Eamonn Andrews was a contestant on TTTT; even in 1957, he was well-known for being a guest panelist on the American version of WML...or maybe he hadn't been a guest on WML much at this point. I did NOT know he was a boxing champion! It was neat seeing the real Pappy Boyington. Excellent episode!
The reason the first game was so easy for me was because Andrews actually appeared on the panel of the American show a few times, going so far as to even sub-host for John Daly once in 1959.
Having watched What's My Line I knew who the real Eamonn Andrews was. I knew of the Flying Tigers the first contestant was not the real one because everyone in the military knows everyone salutes a Medal of Honor recipient regardless of rank. A General will salute a lower ranking officer who has one. It was interesting to meet a real Violet Beauregarde. :)
"What's My Line?" fans, check out this book on the British version of the show by Dicky Leeman. It lists ALL the episodes from 1951 to 1954. www.dropbox.com/s/zpzbsjnp8gc3us4/WML-The%20Famous%20Prog.%2C%201955%20by%20Dicky%20Leeman.pdf?dl=0 As for the British celebrities I recognized from the listings? Well, let's see: Eamonn Andrews (obviously) Richard Attenborough Petula Clark Joan Collins Gracie Fields Hermione Gingold Joan Greenwood Benny Hill Frankie Howerd Wilfred Hyde-White Boris Karloff Margaret Lockwood Bob Monkhouse Kenneth More Robert Morley Terry-Thomas David Tomlinson
the first game was very easy for me because i am from ireland and eamon andrews is a household name over here.he is best remembered in Ireland for his show " this is your life" he died too young at 64
Pappy is from a city in Idaho only about 25 miles or so from my city of Spokane, WA, across the state line. The airport there (although is mostly just a private pilot and business plane airport) is named after him. Coeur d 'Alene, yes, one of the main cities of Idaho and the main town along with nearby Post Falls of the Idaho Panhandle, and it is a very french name indeed. For many people in Spokane the lake there and beach is one of the main destinations for a nearby days vacation, including my own family but not as much the last 5 years or so, it has sort of became too popular and is much more crowded than the days of younger for me.
Game #1: Eamonn Andrews passed away in 1987 and hosted both What’s My Line and This Is Your Life (on ITV) until practically the end of his life. Panelist Angela Ribbon took over his chair in WML for the final seasons on the air, while TIYL was rebooted in the 90s by Thames… _to be aired on the BBC._ (Thames by then has lost his ITV franchise, but continued as a Production Company, now owned by Fremantle that also owns the G-T legacy) Also Eamonn Andrews, being a Sports Commentator, was also the first host of ITV’s Saturday Afternoon marathon _World of Sport._ 7:56 Eamonn basically said to Polly that: 1) BBC2 didn’t happen yet, and 2) ITV was still regionalised. Side note: the fact a show called _To Tell The Truth_ is sponsored by Geritol is a case of ABSOLUTE IRONY due to the brand involvement in the _Twenty One_ affair.
Johan Bengtsson I think he wanted to ask something about the show "What's My Line?" in the U.K. but since he changed his mind about the question, we can't know for sure.
SuperWinterborn I can watch it over and over and it's still so absurd funny. First Hy's question, then his stunned face, Kitty's laughter and then the bell rings. Perfect drama. :)
Johan Bengtsson I've already seen some similar moments on this show. I think they were better at "keeping up appearance" on WML, although there were some hilarious incidents there as well. ;)
SuperWinterborn On WML they lingered on so many things that it sometimes felt like a talk show with invited celebs. Add to that Bennett's longer and longer introductions of John Daly, John's talk with the MGs and some general talk about the weather, communications, politics, the panel's travels and so on. It's only when I watch TTTT that I see how smooth a game show could run. I can't say I miss the other stuff.
Johan Bengtsson On WML the panel became more like a family as time went by. A bit of elitism, maybe. I don't think these two shows can be compared. They were completely different. :)

I kept thinking, " How can they not recognize Eamonn?" Of course none of them had just binge-watched WML over the past few months lol! Then when the 3rd. game started, I also knew Pappy right away, having read his book.
In fact, the entire show where Eamonn subbed for John Daly is posted to the WML channel, not just a clip (along with every other episode!) You can find it here: ruclips.net/video/n_nMysvNzXc/видео.html
Indeed thats why I already knew who the real Mr. Andrews was I watched all of Whats My Line?, I just finished like a month ago every episode on here. Now I am doing this and Password and Match Game.

In addition,Eamonn served as guest panelist in the time Wally Bruner was moderator.

Fascinating as being a Dubliner, I knew the real Eamonn Andrews, but never knew he appeared on this show. Yay!
Pappy Boyington! He wrote an excellent book, though I do wonder how truthful it was.
Of course Polly doesn't know what calipers are. She doesn't know anything.

In game #1, the first imposter was too eager to answer the question. This is usually an indication that they're not the actual person.
In later years,Eamonn hosted Top of the World something Thames produced in cooperation with ABC-Down Under and WPBT,in Miami ch 2.
We now get to see the contestants take their place.
This show was still live, though, and they would move to tape a few years later.
Knew which was Pappy. Seen him many times. RIP...
Doesn't look anything like Robert Conrad!!!!haha.

Bud Collyer was too young too, only 61.

Well I'll be, twelve year olds were actually quite adorable and charming in 1957.
Yes we were!!!!
ah sure we weren't too bad in 1977 either
And in 1972 lol
Wow! Some clapping from the audience during the panel introduction. First time I hear that. 1:06
Have seen Eamonn Andrews a few times on WML so it was easy for a change lol.
When Hy asks "What's my line?" and #2 answers "It's a show." Hy seemed confused by the answer. What did he mean by that question? 4:45

7 years before Roald Dahl's most famous work was published. Coincidence?
10:57: I find it amusing that the kid knows what a caliper is, and Polly doesn't.
Polly is a histrionic idiot.
And in top of that she was a liberal. Can't get more stupid than that.
Polly is braindead

Not if your parent is a engineer of some sort. And before disk breaks?
Polly always seemed like she was a touch high.
#1 is love you Dad. I know he told me that year.
15:55 “My name is Lee Kwan Yu.”
I don’t see Robert Conrad!
Yeah, Game 1 was SO easy for me.
***** Even I did not have to cheat on that. :) Our dear old friend from WML. :)

whoopee
There was a YT clip of Eamonn subbing for John Daly as US moderator of WML. He was TOUGH on the panelists!

Recognized Pappy immediately
Fighter pilots must be small because there is not much space in the cockpit, so #2 was my clear choise.
This is also true for most race care drivers and of of course horse jockeys are preferred to be short and light weight too.

could have easily picked the girl from chicago by their accents. two new yawkas and a chicago girl? did they really pay them in geritol?
They paid them in money. In this case 750 dollars split into three.
I miss Geritol
