The last contestant is an American Legend. Although he died before I was even born I am thankful I got to learn who this man was and what he did to defeat the enemy. My grandfather was also in the Philippines during WW2 , the stories I can remember him telling me are incredible. These are the people we need to remember and the books we need to have our children to read.

They spelled Fertig' s name wrong. Wendell Fertig is my first cousin and I am very proud of that man. The 4 generations after him all served in the military as career men. I am the fourth generation and on my 7th tour overseas. It's in our blood.

I always wished I could hear the conversations the panel were having with the contestants after the show. Great show. Thank you.

Yes, it's charming the way it all turns into a big cocktail party; I wonder if any marriages were birthed at those times.

At times, TTTT was sponsored by Easy On spray starch (as in this episode). At other times it was sponsored by Easy Off oven cleaner. I can't help but wonder what happened if the two products came into contact with each other. I'd be afraid of something similar to a matter - anti-matter explosion (at least until Zefram Cochrane perfects the warp engine).

Great stories, especially the WWII fighter in the Philippines. I got two out of three but missed the fire watcher. Bud Collyer screwed up identifying the sponsor. The sponsor was Easy On spray starch, but he kept saying Easy Off oven cleaner.

The #2 pole guy looks the thinnest. And I thought #3 fire watcher was youngest.

I didn't hear Bud Collyer make mention that John Pennel's (not Pannell) prize money would be donated to charity because of his status as an amateur athlete. Either he neglected to mention it or it was cut out of the GSN tape. In actuality, Pennell donated his money to the Brian Sternberg Hospital Fund. Sternberg was also a world record holder in the pole vault for a short time as the fiberglass pole (which replaced a brief usage of aluminum poles, which in turn replaced bamboo) was causing the world record to be broken many times over the space of months. A student at the University of Washington, Sternberg's career was cut short when training on the trampoline. Attempting a move he had done many times before, he fell awkwardly in the middle where a spotter couldn't help. He became a quadriplegic as a result.
Pennel continued as a competitive pole vaulter throughout the 1960's battling fellow Americans Fred Hansen and Bob Seagren for #1. Hansen won Olympic gold in 1964 after Pannel suffered a back injury and finished in 15th place. Pannel was favored to win in 1968 but it was Seagren who took home the gold as Pannel only managed 5th place. He did set one more world record in 1969 at 17' 10¼" (5.44 m). He retired in 1970 because of injuries. He died in 1993 at age 53 from cancer.
(It should be noted that some of the world records that Pennel claimed to have set, seven in succession in all, were not officially recognized by the International Association of Athletics Federations. That could be for a number of reasons: no device to measure wind speed, too much help from a tail wind, not a sanctioned meet, not an official means of measuring the height of the bar, and so on.)
