He is in Congress because 51% of the voting public in Long Island voted for him. A total of about 275k people. He ran unopposed as the Republican candidate because the local GOP canceled the local GOP primary. He still had to beat a well-known local liberal Democrat with a long history of liberal activism and legitimate experience as a congressional aide and activist lawyer. He did not just sneak and lie his way into Congress. He basically took advantage of the swing to the right in NY that Trump started combined with an opponent and a political party who clearly was too distracted to present a serious opposition to him. The Republicans in Congress are privately laughing their asses off with regards to this entire situation. It just goes to show that there are serious consequences to aspiring politicians in terms of running as a Republican vs a Democrat. The people who elected Santos are blaming him, but everyone else is blaming the Democrats themselves for losing to this guy as well as the LI Republicans for electing him. The GOP as a whole is making out like a bandit. Sure there will be some schma attached to them behind Santos' credibility issues but that schma was already there.
The point is that political elections are not about truth, honesty, the American Way, the economy, National Defense and all that crap. Political elections are about WINNING ELECTIONS. You don't win, you have no influence on policy. You don't get to vote on new bills coming before Congress. You get no committee assignments. You're nothing more than the side that lost.
The US government is all about giving the winners the chance to run the country for a while. The GOP voters can bitch about Santos winning under a false pretext. But he won. So what is the real lesson here? Better to lie and win and run the country than to be honest and lose and get kicked out of the country. You want a "meritocracy"? There you go.

When you've been in love with someone who is a pathological liar, your mind goes toward believing the lies that they tell to cover up the lies they've already told. Eventually GS will have a nervous breakdown (or fake one). The damage PL's leave behind is the complete loss of trust by the ones who loved them, and the inability to ever fully trust someone again. My heart goes out to Pedro. He was so young to have this happen. I didn't find out for sure (with evidence) until 5.5 years of marriage, 2 kids, and 2 assaults (for catching him in the lies) later, at age 27.

People decide to run. Local party organizations vet candidates. That system failed for his district. Most people give benefit of the doubt too much. Most people do not assume the worst in others.
Unfortunately if you are part of your local party, your job is to find out what could cause your candidate to lose. You need to know about everything bad or embarrassing they have done. Someone else will find out.

I know someone like this. We throw out the term "compulsive liar" but to actually interact with someone who lies in every interaction you have is so odd. You walk away always wondering if the smallest most insignificant detail was made up.
I worked with a lady like this. Everything out of her mouth was incredible after I found out what a liar she was.
I actually bumped into one such person at a bar over the Christmas holidays. He is much worse because he lies, forgets, then tells a contradictory lie. It was quite an experience.

I also said that he appears to be the type who would steal from the old and the dead. I have no doubt that there is more to come from this vile person.
