I attended a funeral today and discovered this song yesterday for the first time. I hit play on my way to and from the funeral itself on repeat. It was an untimely passing, too young at 32. This song has given me so much perspective I’ve never held previously. Bravo Strokes
The art is gorgeous, RCA got it out of the park. I love the Heavy Metal vibe in the Megastructure scenes. The song struck me like a chord when I first heard it. I was completely blown away by this music video! It’s a nostalgia trip going back in time by shooting through infinity to get there.
Based on the video, I like to think this is mostly about different relationships with death. The boy is suicidal, the curse in the rabbit world seems to be inescapable, the aliens are transcending, and the space warrior sacrifices herself. They are all met with death and deal with it in different ways. The turn to it, they run from it, they aspire for it, and they are honored by it. A lot of deep feels in this masterpiece. And "the door" is the unknown. The void. The line between life and death. Even though these stories are very different, they are connected through life and death. Something inevitable for everything in the universe.
First song in a while i learned first listen. You have no idea what feelings this song gives me i even drew a few tributes for the song it got me out of my slump which is good cuz if I don’t sell art i starve.
Does anyone understand that video? I believe it's that story of the boy who was born and raised in the late 20th century. A typical example of "the future youth (as incarnating souls) will come from entirely different cosmic worlds than us", like Rudolf Steiner once told his followers. He witnesses how people -- his own human parents -- fall victim to demonical possession of the worst kind (Asuras) and tear everything, deep love built up in many years, apart, even destroying their own kid's cosmic heroine right in front of him. The kids brain gets destructed in a moment like this, but he yet has to live and later he dies in more modern times as a cosmonaut, because people of "the new abnormal" lifestyle are casual about the life of their fellow man and forgot to provide him with air out of lazyness or something like that. Then there's the cosmic heroine. I think they should have used another image then she breaking those titanian chains, because no one is able to build up _that_ much PSI especially in that kind of a situation. (Lower minded people in the near, are restricting the use of PSI by nature. For example, it's nearly impossible to physically levitate among low-minded idiots, because minds always have the occult power to hold things as they know them.) is this in the future, and is the spiritual cosmic civilization destroying future Earth, because it became decadent? Also the boy visits his old parental home as a sphere-human (=dead person). Then it transforms into the future: organic, self-sufficient cities in which the higher (minded) race will live in, while the rest, all the peoples of evil, the new human primates, will live their ape-like fates in the non-civilized wastelands. This will be in the mid of the 2000s.
We had something similar before, Ask me anything from First impressions of earth was also just Julian and no guitars, also Call it Fate, call it karma was similar too
I started listening to The Strokes when I was still in school. Now I'm a 27 years old man. Next year I'm going to be a dad. This song hits me really hard that I have to grow up and face the harsh reality of adulthood. May all of us be strong together.
I was in school too when I 1st heard them, now im in my 30s with kids and when they get in the car they say put the Strokes on, when were barbecuing in the backyard its the Strokes on the speakers, show your kids what good music is and you get to re-enjoy the songs over again.
That look of confusion that the bunny has when it gets slashed across the face, as if confused as to why anyone would want to hurt someone like that...it’s heartbreaking.
Yes Alan, it is heartbreaking. Heart wrenching. There is so much compassion and empathy and love here, God bless you all for having...hearts of gold....for I too am that way and my heart breaks every day for you, for me and for them. The pain on the rabbits face, almost hard to take because it seems like despair. The hardest part is sitting here helpless, watching it and there is nothing I can do to help him. And this is a metaphor for all of us who have been struck dumb and left with that pained expression of sadness, fear and confusion.
@@lebigfin5251 ruclips.net/video/K9USppH_8eg/видео.html No, I know it sounds like a synth. But in that interview, Julian literally says it sounds like a synth (the intro), but it's actually Nick playing it using a digital guitar.
I felt that The Strokes has been very distant over the past 7 years. Eventhough they did live shows, and even releasing the "Future, Present, Past" EP, somehow the feeling just wasn't the same... It's like they're present but was "absent" at the same time. And then came the Bernie Rally, which in my opinion was one of their best performances, and the crowd had a great time (with the crowdsurfing and getting up on stage etc.). I was watching the stream and for me, the peak of it was the "At The Door" music video reveal. Listening to it made me feel very melancholic. It felt like I finally found what I was missing all these years. "At The Door" made me realize how much I missed The Strokes and how they played an important role in my life. The nostalgic ambience of this song reminded me of why I was in love with The Strokes in the first place. Welcome back guys :") can't wait for April 10th.
It is amazing how each segment looks like it is taken from some forgotten classic animation movie. And: full credits in the video and description. Which is always a sign that the band did it on purpose and wasn't just an accidentally successful pitch.
The closest you'll get to this is either “Love Death+robots” which was inspired by “ heavy metal”... it's about different stories, but all stories have one thing in common tho... There's an object known as the orb, which is unknown... Until the climax
The strokes still sound like the strokes.....even when they change thier styles completely.....love the music so much thinking about using a strokes song for a walkout fight song.
@@Fugshot1 def thinking juicebox. I like something that'll calm me down and focus. So strokes music always clears my mind ..clear skies I was thinking too
The Wikipedia for this single does such a good job breaking down each section of the animation and explaining how they interweave. I’m pretty sure all the different aspects were drawn by different artists, and each animation has a name (The Boy, The Rabbits, The Megastructure, The Celestial Procession, Cosmonaut 1982), and all are inspired by 70’s-80’s cartoons, animated films, and cult-classic fantasies (Watership Down, Heavy Metal, The NeverEnding Story).
The sole inspiration here is the _secret space program_ . "At the Door" means the door into a new era, the cosmic era where humanity -- as a whole as opposed to 75 preceding years of black projects-- leaves the Sol-system to explore outer space, started in its preparations with the C-virus agenda. But pssst! 🤫💀 Didn't really find many cmts to post that under, though... the cmts that interpreted the video and were new when it released, seem for the most part to be gone...
legit thought my music had started playing when i was watching drew's video. i've been listening to the strokes on repeat for weeks lmao. glad to have further proof that he's got great taste
Relatable. I miss the guitar so damn much and I also miss the old The Strokes when Julian didn't use autotune. But still they're my favorite band ever and I love them. I just wish they could do an album kinda similar to Room On Fire.
But you can see that in that moment he realized fear would not help him, it cannot help anyone of us. We must learn to gather our stengths to find ourselves out of bad situations. Be as brave as that defenseless rabbit. We are all here to learn my friends, be kind to each other and reach out to life, it will show us the right way. Be well :)
I grew up with my mom listening to the strokes and they've been one of my two main comfort bands my whole life. My mom became an addict, my dad an abusive drunk, passed around over and over again from family member ro family member. Always in bad and dangerous abusive situations and every time I'd think I could never make it out I always had the strokes and the shins to help pull me through it all. I never thought I'd make it to 15 and now I'll be 21 next month and I have this band to thank for helping me not give up. This song and video just existing means a lot. Edit: Thank you for all the kind comments, I genuinely hope all of you who have experienced similar things or are going/have gone through your own hardships are able to come out the other end stronger for it. I'm glad we can all connect through this amazing band, and I hope you all lead amazing wonderful lives despite the ups and downs or maybe because of the ups and downs. ❤
My connection might not be exactly the same but I know what you mean, and I've also more than once held on to their music to the point that it has become a little ambivalent to me these days hearing Julian's voice again in a new song. I wish you all the best as it can't have been easy. Best wishes.
So these are the first strokes singles in years, and they're great, no denying. Totally worthy of praise. But can we also take a second to appreciate these videos? Both this and the bad decisions one are just so incredible. Original ideas, a beautiful aesthetic, crazy effects (the deepfake in bad decisions). Well done. Best music videos I've seen lately.
@ Nah, I'm a big boy. When you've lived to 50, some mud's gonna be slung. As an animation freak, and since this style is so reminiscent of Heavy Metal, I had hoped to see this beautiful vision in full clarity whether standard or vr.
Every song by The Strokes that has such an innovative arrangement makes me wonder if maybe all this time I was listening to the same music with different singers or bands, because literally some of his songs are unlike anything I've heard before compared to other artists, it was what my life was missing, thanks for giving it to me, thank you Julian you are always a great inspiration.
@@alienjoshie1136 I mean, The Strokes and their guitar technician wrote it so they were more than just “instruments” Rick Rubin was definitely a key player though, considering the production is amazing, but reducing the band members to “instruments” is not giving them enough credit.

@@Apr1cotBunny Not a bad idea - During the Electrifying Conclusion tour of Guided by Voices in 2014, the sets opened with Pollard's ballad "Windows of Your World" on the speakers after the lights went down... could have a similar vibe with this one!
This song resonates with me so deeply. Makes me think of where we are, where we've been and where we're going. What it's all about. Jean Paul Sartre hinted that music was the cure for existential dread, when I hear this song, I see that. The video's amazing as well, adds greatly to the effect.
Used to love the strokes when I was younger. For whatever reason I lost touch with them. Found this song 2 days ago and have played it about 100 times. My daughter is 2 and I'm showing her all strokes music old and new. Thank you for blessing all of us with all this beautiful music all these years!
I don't know how you all interpret the song, but the video reinforces what I believe its about; the death of your childhood, seen through the eyes of a child, in specific- Julian. The first two verses and choruses are about Julian's awareness that soon he will not be a boy any longer. That time of his life is drawing nearer to the end, and he's afraid. 'I'm never gonna make it out of here in time; I guess that's just fine' He looks at his parents less like caregivers and more like people. He's beginning to understand the monstrosities of life. He is seeing the mutant rabbit transform and attack the Julian-Rabbit. He's seeing his parents fight. He imagines his science fiction heroine oppressed and condemned to death, etc etc. He seems doomed to be nothing more than a shell of his childhood, a utilitarian mechanism that will live an empty life and one day, inevitably, die. 'I'm an ugly boy'...'lonely afterlife'...'use me like an oar' etc But then, the second movement is about is ability to act and impose his own will in a given situation. He doesn't just have to become a helpless adult, he can stand up to the monstrosities of life and at least confront them like his heroes in the stories from his childhood. The heroine breaks the chains and kills her oppressors, the rabbit breaks loose of the thicket. Its Julian's life to live, not to be a shadow or a footnote in someone else's life, but to accept the death of his childhood as a liberating force in his own life yet left to live. I connect the imagery of the science fiction story to the impetus that allows Julian to sublimate the suffering of existence into something beautiful and meaningful to him. His embrace of the death character is this acceptance and the eclipse/black hole imagery is the idea of entering the singularity of the future. Julian's still a boy, he hasn't done anything but mature, but the shadow of his future is there in the coda 'i'll be waiting from the other side'
a bit wordy, hmmm. i jest ofcoarse and bow deep and low to your superior autopsy of the singers deepest musings, alas such deep yet highbrow descriptions i fear may soar high over fellow youtube attendees in this most humble of comment sections, or some such bollocks.
It's definitely one of the most beautiful videos I've seen. Super stylistic. I don't think I've ever seen anyone pay homage to a very short lived, but artisicly influencal period of fantasy animated movies from 1973 to 1981. The hobbit, Watership down, Wizards, Fantasic Planet, lord of the ring, heavy metal. They are all very different, while simultaneously sharing a similar aesthetic. The animators knocked it out of the park. It's hard to believe they put this much effort into a music video......It couldn't of been cheap.
"At The Door" I can't escape it I'm never gonna make it out of this in time I guess that's just fine I'm not there quite yet My thoughts, such a mess Like a little boy What you runnin' for? Legitimately one of the most beautiful things that I’ve ever seen. The part when the kid sheds a tear before embracing death...really hits home. I know many of us have felt like that kid. Unloved and unwanted. When that part of the video happened I just started bawling. Thank you for this you guys. It means so much to your fans.
Lyrics: I can’t escape it Never gonna make it Out of this in time I guess that’s just fine I’m not there quite yet My thoughts - such a mess Like a little boy What you running for? Julian's narrative transitions began with the song "on the other side” the lyrics - “nobody’s waiting for me on the other side” and then - “i know you’re waiting for me on the other side” to now - “i’ll be waiting from the other side, waiting for the tide to rise”. Julian sings a lot about death, I'm very interested as to how much influence Julian had over the music video if anyone has any insight on that.
it’s quite obvious what this song is about (death) but essentially it’s about contemplating death, accepting death, fighting death, sacrifice, encouraging others to move on after, and the transcendence of death. there’s probably more themes i missed so feel free to add but by far my most played song of 2021 by far
Sounds like it's about a kid having terminal illness, in a family where the parents are already having struggles. They wants to be used like an oar to navigate their parents troubles, while they struggle to come to terms with their terminal issues. I think that they are having difficulties because of the cannonball reference. The kid feels alone every night, probably because they can't leave due to poor health conditions, and when they are banging at the door, the parents don't have the answers to the terminal illness problem I could be projecting however 😅
@@nathanauger7744 i mean that’s a fair assessment but the video shows so much more than just the kids story, i think “at the door” is more of a reference to general thoughts of death in many forms rather than just terminal illness
i feel it is just he leaving his childish inocence as probably vitim of abuse or something else. every scenario represents his childish imagination or toys he played and he is deal with it, he his not a kid anymore. it is the death of his childish imagination in order to deal with pain. ------ Burakoff explained the final scene, where the boy returns home to find it's been abandoned for years: "There's a feeling when you are growing up that you are just leaving for a second to go get something, that you'll be right back. But reality is not the same as a memory, you can't go back. Something or some time that feels so close to you can be impenetrably far away. It's a feeling of loss that I get when I think about certain memories from my past. That notion is at the heart of this video… How do these different characters deal with loss? What does it feel like to face the future?
Idk about anybody else, but i have heard this track many of times, but today was the first time in have seen the music video and this sh*t had me fighting back a tear. Love it when music/visuals bring me emotion. Thank you
I mean this in the best way, but the video is hard for me to watch. It's like a deep-seated childhood memory being pulled to the forefront. I grew up watching weird old sci fi and fantasy stuff with my dad and it's like watching a film I've never seen... that I've seen a thousand times before. Like a new nostalgia. Being paired with one of my favorite bands makes it all the stranger and I love it.
Both of my parents are addicts. This song is so accurate I can't stop crying. Everything said is uncanny to my life. Mentality this is where my head has been for so long. Thank you for putting this in the world.
Sorry to hear that, Carrine. I'm a 19 year old addict with 15 months in recovery, and it's a terrible disease all around. I'll keep your family in my thoughts. If you feel like you'd benefit from something like them, there are support groups out there for the loved ones of addicts.

I've read another version of the final sentence. "I'll be waiting from the other side Waiting for the time to pass." And I guess this makes sense, because the "door to other dimesion" opens just in this moment in the video.
He says: -- I'll be waiting from the other side Waiting for the tide to rise -- Which makes sense as it calls back to "Sinkin' like a stone. Use me like an oar. To get yourself to shore." Which makes me believe this song is political in nature. "Not tryna' build no dynasty. I can't see beyond this wall" It was in fact premiered at a Bernie Rally 2 days ago. But the beauty of songs like this is they can have so much meaning in so many different ways to different people though.

🔥The Strokes - At The Door Lyrics
🔥ruclips.net/video/yRok4GcJWOo/видео.html
It's going to be breathtakingly beautiful
The music video looks like every 80s cartoon I would have loved mixed together!

Holy shit. What a fucking ballad. Modern day masterpiece. Love you Strokes

This beautiful nostalgic animation style needs to come back as a feature-length big-budget theatrical movie.
It is amazing how each segment looks like it is taken from some forgotten classic animation movie. And: full credits in the video and description. Which is always a sign that the band did it on purpose and wasn't just an accidentally successful pitch.

Not at all what I expected and much more than I could ever want. Holy shit is this good
I don't know how you all interpret the song, but the video reinforces what I believe its about; the death of your childhood, seen through the eyes of a child, in specific- Julian.
'I'm an ugly boy'...'lonely afterlife'...'use me like an oar' etc
But then, the second movement is about is ability to act and impose his own will in a given situation.

Julian's narrative transitions began with the song "on the other side” the lyrics - “nobody’s waiting for me on the other side” and then - “i know you’re waiting for me on the other side” to now - “i’ll be waiting from the other side, waiting for the tide to rise”.

Sounds like it's about a kid having terminal illness, in a family where the parents are already having struggles. They wants to be used like an oar to navigate their parents troubles, while they struggle to come to terms with their terminal issues. I think that they are having difficulties because of the cannonball reference.
The kid feels alone every night, probably because they can't leave due to poor health conditions, and when they are banging at the door, the parents don't have the answers to the terminal illness problem
I could be projecting however 😅
@@nathanauger7744 i mean that’s a fair assessment but the video shows so much more than just the kids story, i think “at the door” is more of a reference to general thoughts of death in many forms rather than just terminal illness
i feel it is just he leaving his childish inocence as probably vitim of abuse or something else. every scenario represents his childish imagination or toys he played and he is deal with it, he his not a kid anymore. it is the death of his childish imagination in order to deal with pain.
The strokes never disappoint.... just when it comes to touring
Why disappointing touring?
@@celestef7634 maybe they don't go to where they are from? Lol I went to New Hampshire. It was worth it. Loved the performance
@@lilluckypit oh lol. Yeah I guess, they seem to go to a lot of places though
Also, LUCKY!
When they play in New York they are amazing at least they were on New Year’s Eve but I think he was in a good mood.
I know their shows are amazing they’ve just never come around where I live makes me want to cry lol
so the strokes are proving they don't have to be in a box, while playing in the box, breaking out of a box, noticing that a box doesn't exist
wearing t shirts with ¨the box¨ symbol
Juxn Rxmírez isn't box a funny word once u look at it
They were never in a box. This doesn't so different from River of Brakelights.
One of the funniest and most pretentious comments I've ever read on here.
Or is that just your interpretation?
The more I listen to this song the better it gets. Wow. Just wow.
Indeed
It's like what? Watership Down (1978) meets Heavy Metal (1981) meets the album cover art of TSOL Dance With Me. Is that about it? Something like that.
I couldn’t have said this any better than you just did. That’s basically how I felt about this video.
@@CoolhandLukeSkywalkr exactly what I was thinking before I saw your comment!
Yes that thé way ....
THIS SONG IS LIKE THE STROKES AND THE VOIDZ HAD A CHILD AND ITS GLORIOUS
Not really. It's just a weak voidz song.
Beetlebum3 not weak just less chaotic
Yass
So a JC song, basically (which is fine)
not me going crazy over the watership down references!!! this is amazing!! thanks drew for mentioning this or I'd have never watched.
Its been a while since I had anything on repeat. Welcome back The Strokes. My ears are ready!!!
Jeremy C haha! I’ve been playing this on repeat as well. It gives me so many feels! I’m glad I can relate to you and everyone else in these comments because idk anyone besides my hubby who listens to them.

Ho yes......... superbe
Damn, this song hit me hard, I didn't expect to get so emotional
() Hiiii would u check out Time by The Impures
🎉
Struck you like a chord did it?
Everything Jules sings makes me cry. Like every day lol
watched this with so much focus and attention to both the song and the video, and when it was over, the ending credits felt like a much needed silence to process everything. cant quite explain it
I can't escape it
I'm never gonna make it out of this in time
I guess that's just fine
I'm not there quite yet
My thoughts, such a mess
Like a little boy
What you running for?
Run at the door
Anyone home?
Have I lost it all?
Struck me like a chord
I'm an ugly boy
Holding on the night
Lonely after light
You begged me not to go
Sinking like a stone
Use me like an oar
And get yourself to shore
Bang at the door
Anyone home?
It's just what they do
Right in front of you
Like a cannonball
Slamming through your wall
In their face, I saw
What they're fighting for
I can't escape it
I'm never gonna make it to the end, I guess
Struck me like a chord
I'm an ugly boy
Holding on the night
Lonely after light
Banging on the door
I don't wanna know
Sinking like a stone
So use me like an oar
Onto fight what I can’t see
Not tryna build
No dynasty
I can't see beyond this wall
But we lost this game
So many times before
I been on a cold road
I'll be waiting, yeah
I'll be waiting for the old times
Waiting for the time to pass
I been on a cold road
I'll be waiting, yeah
I'll be waiting for the old times
Waiting for the time to pass
I've read another version of the final sentence.
"I'll be waiting from the other side
Waiting for the time to pass."
And I guess this makes sense, because the "door to other dimesion" opens just in this moment in the video.
I think he says "Hard to fight what you can't see" rather than onto
He says:
--
I'll be waiting from the other side
Waiting for the tide to rise
--
Which makes sense as it calls back to
"Sinkin' like a stone. Use me like an oar. To get yourself to shore."
Which makes me believe this song is political in nature.
"Not tryna' build no dynasty. I can't see beyond this wall"
It was in fact premiered at a Bernie Rally 2 days ago.
But the beauty of songs like this is they can have so much meaning in so many different ways to different people though.
*"My thoughts, such a mess"
This is incredible on all fronts. Well done, The Strokes.

Haha thank you
Here it is
Thanks
Much appreciated, thanks.😊
The amount of beatiful riffs and melodys on this album is unbelievable.
For everyone bitching about no drums or guitar have you not heard Call it Fate Call it Karma?? It’s not the first time they’ve done this. I think this will be one song that glues the album together
Richard Reney Call it fate has a rhythm track provided from an optigan/mellotron, but yeah I agree. What makes this song great is how bare it is
Yes but, how many people's favorite song is call it fate call it karma?
I hope there aren’t any guitar or drums on the album. I want them to go deep into the synth abyss.
Mi conclusión.
Julian debe estar insoportable en plena crisis.
Por eso grabó esto solo. Porque no se lo aguanta nadie.
Yes Yes mine

Im crying for such a beutiful song .... this lyrics... the message ... the art. And after all this years we can hear a new strokes song, more mature, more deep. Thanks for bringing us this unique joy.
Totally agree!
The combo of this song & video is the best released in at least the last 10 years. Such a classic
Tame Impala's album 14 February and now The Strokes.
Life on this planet is beautiful sometimes
Simone Cerullo stroke full length album. 10 April
Simone Cerullo 100% agreed😍😭❤️
i mean only sometimes, when these things happens. Otherwise is 97,5 % shit
I have listen to the Slow Rush and spoiler : it's a banger :)
THE DAY HAS COME, FINALLY I'M LISTENING TO A NEW STROKES SONG
