    Before asking you what I want to ask let me first tell you that you are the very best overclocker educator I have ever seen and your metodological aproach to overclocking is everything anyone would hope for. The quality of the information you put into these videos is quite amazing, gold literally. Sad so few people know about you and your channel. I think this is simply a question of time. Now, about my question: Please consider deliding the 7950x3d and then overclocking it to see how the improved thermal margins affect the overclock potential.

      @@SkatterBencher Ok, so if you end up doing it Der8auer sells a tool that makes deliding very easy and he posted a delid video of the 7950X3D. A previous video analysis of deliding a 7950 ( also from Der8auer ) showed a huge drop in temps when used bare core on block, and this is the reason I think it may be worth the effort.

      Power efficiency I didn't even though it is possible to get from the new high end cpus. I've got the 7800x3d and it consumes under 50w no matter what I do to it. During CPU-Z stress test I get 6700 score with 55W consumption. With my 4.4 ghz oc 5820k I didn't measure, but I expect into the 150-200w for a 1600 score or so. I am just blown by the performance of the 7800x3d given the fact that it only got 2 more cores (4 threads) and it clocks at around 4.8-5 ghz. If i were to not OC the 5820k, I would get around 1200 score, 1300. With the 7800x3d I get 1200 with running one core/2 threads only.. Just amazing

    This was a good video to understand the mechanics behind how the cpu behaves. Now we all can't copy each other's CO settings (silicon lottery), I just did a safe CO of -15 all cores & and Fmax of +150 & PBO was set to Manual (I only changed and set my PPT to 150w to stay away from diminishing power returns). I hit the 5900mhz on 3 non Vcache cores, others max out at like 5800-5875mhz. The system is stable under all conditions including High and more importantly the lower workload scenarios where many aggressive CO settings give too little voltage to the cores and crash the system. In the past with Ryzen overclocking found that when I set CO negative too aggressively, it's the lower workloads where the CCDs clock lower and you end up too low left on the VF curve and receive too little voltage for those lower frequencies and boom you crash. So be mindful that stability is not only at the high usage use case, but also the lower usage use cases.
    The Cache CCD, all cores hit 5250mhz. Max temp under Cinebench 10min multi core is around 79C with a Noctua Air cooler NH-D15 (with H-2 paste) in a Fractal Design Torrent case (So airflow to the max). I didn't want to check each core for WHEA errors and tune it further so i went the lazy all core route; I'm happy with it. This 7950X3D is truly an efficiency king, and a jack of all trades.

    To the uneducated, you make it sound like ECLK is a feature of every AM5 motherboard. It is not, only the most expensive, highest-end boards have it.
    It's important to note this for potential buyers, who are not following closely the scene. If you plan on getting 7800X3D with a decent B650(E) board (like myself), don't expect to find the ECLK / Asynchronous Clock feature. We're left with only the PBO2 and Curve Optimiser strategy.

    Two questions I had, would your #3rd overclocking method benefit from deliding the CPU and ultimately enable higher stable clocks?
    Second question min 13:05, I dunno if I got this right. Technically speaking does that mean a (simular binned) 7800x3d will performe better (up to 8 cores ofc) than a 7950x3D cause it has a favorable Voltage for the 3d vcache CCD only?
    Hope those questions weren't confusing or kinda wrong. Tysm in advance!!!

      As far as I understand AMD's Precision Boost algorithm, lower temperatures will always help to achieve higher frequencies. That's because it would allow running a different VFT point. X voltage for Y frequency at Z temperature -> lower Z means higher Y.
      That said, I think the main limiter for the 7950X3D isn't temperature since in none of my OC strategies I hit the TjMax of 89C. The main limiter is the allowed CPU voltage for the V-Cache CCD.
      Can't answer the 7800X3D question since I haven't tried it yet, but I assume it's a similar situation like with the X-SKUs where the best CCDs go into the Ryzen 9 and lesser CCDs go into the Ryzen 7/5s. I assume the V-Cache VID limit with 7800X3D will be similarly constraining, just that 7800X3D has lower Fmax.
      Unfortunately, but also a little excitingly, if the positive Fmax boost offset is also locked on 7800X3D, it means Async ECLK will be the only viable path for overclocking.

    Extrapolating on your numbers, it sounds like the 7800X3D might be able to hit ~5.5GHz on a 105 ECLK. That sounds extremely compelling, at least for people who aren't doing productivity workloads.

    • @SkatterBencher
      @SkatterBencher  Год назад +5

      7800X3D has a listed maximum boost frequency of 5 GHz, so I assume the fused Fmax will be 5050 MHz. Also assuming the Fmax Boost Override will be locked, then 105eclk will give you ~ 5.3G
      Based on my limited experience with this 1 X3D sample and inferring from the conservative boost clock of the 7800X3D, I think the V-Cache is very sensitive and tricky to overclock. I would probably expect V-Cache CCDs to not clock much higher than 5.45G for the best ones and 5.15G for the worst ones.

    Once again, outstanding content and well presented!

    • @SkatterBencher
      @SkatterBencher  9 месяцев назад

      The only working strategy (I've found) is testing them yourself, unfortunately.
      In OC Strategy #3 I use Eclk to overclock the CPU. When using the Eclk, we effectively increase the frequency of a V/F point. So, if the V/F point was 5000 at 1.25V, with 101 MHz ECLK it's 5050 at 1.25V. Some cores may not be able to have their V/F curve adjusted too much and become unstable due to too low voltage for a certain frequency.
      With a positive curve optimizer, we can offset a core's V/F curve to use more voltage. So let's say that 5050 isn't stable at 1.25V, with a CO of +5 maybe the voltage is 1.275V and then the core is stable again.

    • @SkatterBencher
      @SkatterBencher  Месяц назад +2

      The test software will vary depending on the architecture and even sample. When we use Curve Optimizer to undervolt, we need to find the weakest link for our CPU. Sometimes that's all core heavy AVX, sometimes it's single core SSE, and sometimes it's even idling at desktop.
      I'll typically try first exploring with OCCT where I can define test scenarios for SSE, AVX, AVX2, and AVX512 for both all core and per-core. In the initial Curve Optimization process, I also use dynamic benchmarks like AI Benchmark, Geekbench, or the Y-Cruncher stress test to see if anything triggers instability after undervolt.

    I'm guessing that FMAX limit on CCD0 is due to the v-cache timing achievable at the voltage limit? (And that voltage limit set to protect against damage)

    I just upgraded my i9 7980xe seven-year-old to 9 7950x3d. I got around 20 to 30% improvement. I appreciate seeing Ryzen running with a fraction of the power, but that was completely disappointing.
    Precision boost overdrive 😂 drives Ryzen to much lower than what was mentioned in AMD marketing documentation. I hope I am missing something and come back and change this feedback. Meanwhile, I see tons of marketing from AMD and much less performance. It is Intel going behind that made the opportunity for AMD.
    Now, speaking pure business, AMD is doing the correct thing, as energy consumption is the key, knowing that the world is going mobile. Desktops are secondary, and for gaming, they are being eaten by consoles. AMD looks stable and robust, and this makes it a winner l. BUT, a real jump in performance is an unmet wish.

    So ECLK doesn’t affect other devices like USB and SATA, meaning it’s safe for daily use?

    • @SkatterBencher
      @SkatterBencher  Год назад +2

      Reference clock tuning doesn't affect anything except for the CPU clocks, but only if you're in ECLK1 mode. It's indeed safe for daily use.
      If you're overclocking the reference clock in ICLK (internal clock) or ECLK0 mode, then it will affect those parts.
      Theoretical maximum speed would be higher since ECLK can go pretty high. I achieved 170 MHz on water cooling at launch valid.x86.fr/ilmj1v. Let's say you stick to 110 MHz ECLK and a 200 MHz Fmax boost override, then the 7950X3D frequency would be 5775 (3D) / 6545 (non-3D).

    I didn't understand the 2 step at 31:16 . By that time we have positive all-core CO but the first bullet says "increase per-core NEGATIVE" CO. And next bullet again increases values but of positive CO.
    Shouldn't we use positive at every step in ECLK process? Shouldn't it read as follows?
    - increase all-core positive CO until unstable
    - if unstable decrease per-core positive CO

    • @SkatterBencher
      @SkatterBencher  Год назад +1

      Hi! I looked back at it and it's indeed a bit confusing. The idea here is that in step 1 we identify the frequency limit across all-core and in step 2 we're trying to do it for each core. We assume that in step 1 we'd be too conservative with the best cores, therefore in step 2 we try to reduce the curve optimizer. This will make it boost higher. However, for cores that remain unstable, we need to further increase the curve optimizer.
      Hope this makes it a little more clear.

    Does anyone know if the V cache CCD on the 7900x3d has the same fixed freq cap (5250) as shown here for the 7950x3d? Since it has fewer active cores I was wondering if it might have a slightly higher fixed cap, which might be a good trade off if you don't regularly need all the additional cores of the 7950 for productivity.

    • @ShadowlessDeath47

      It has a lower cap, AMD's website says 5000. I imagine you might be able to push it higher than the 7950x3d with good ECLK tuning, but I also think the better binned chips are going into the 7950x3d so it's probably less likely you'll get a chip you can really push that hard.
