Does part 2 explain what the different shooting modes do? and which one is best for sports. I've heard, that Burst is better for sports, while others say Manual is only for advanced photographers? What is the best shooting mode for youth soccer shooting?
It took until today for me to finally grasp Manuel 👊! Thank you!! This doesn't just apply to sports because what you just explained is allowing a newbie to finally feel like they can take their 1st step and grasp understanding of these 3 settings and how they effect each other and work together. Sports is needing a fast shutter and when you don't need it so fast for landscapes and nature you just move everything in the way that it should go keeping in mind how they may effect the other avoiding blur/noise/under or over exposure and understanding bokah
Great video Rob, well explained for people who are starting out. The one tip I would add is not to be afraid of using auto ISO. I set the shutter speed and aperture, but I let the camera pick the ISO. In sports photography (especially outdoors), the lighting conditions are constantly changing and the last thing I want to think about is settings, but rather focus on the action. If it's indoors like basketball, then the lighting should remain pretty much constant and in that case I'll set the ISO manually. Anyway! Great video, keep up the great work.
Indoor basketball is so hard to shoot. The lighting is extremely low in some gyms. I finally got a 50mm f 1.8 lens and that’s helping a lot! The iso is mostly at 1600 or 3200 so it’s always grainy but the denoise bar in photoshop helps a lot.
Thank you so much!! Simple! Straight to the point! Easy to understand!! Question would these steps still be the same when shooting outdoor sports at night
Thank you soooo much. This is the BEST tutorial that I have seen to explain all of this, so far. You made this very simple and easy to comprehend. Thank you!
Rob Sambles no, thank you! I just did a photo shoot of my dog running across a field to get his tire(which he loves to carry). Just about every picture was awesome, in focus and useable. I do a lot of landscape but am really interested in action and wildlife. I got somewhere to go from your tutorial. Do you have an Instagram?
Great video as always mate , I love the information videos like this always gets you thinking more about what you could do to improve .cant wait for part 2
Yeah I can man, it's exactly the same though. The settings I talk about here are for all light levels. You'll just need to bring that iso up more or lower that shutter speed slightly
But if you wanted to use say f5.6 to get more of multiple subjects in focus I up my ISO to compensate for the increased aperture. But I don’t like using high ISO settings but need to get out of that confirm zone and up the iso. Great video ty!
Hi Rob l got a second hand 7D mk2 for Christmas thanks to your video about them this Saturday I photographed my local village team Dobwalls in Cornwall they had a big game cup quarter final Senior against a team from the next level up I took the plunge and followed this video on setting in manual sent some photos to their Facebook page but better still to the local paper The Cornish Times they are going to use 4 of them I'm over the moon thanks to you
Just found your videos. I have a Canon 7dII and I'm excited to get into sports photography. Mostly rock climbing and combat sports (MMA/boxing/wrestling/bjj). Since I have practiced those sports and are immersed in the local scenes. So your videos are a ton of help. They answer a lot of questions.
Hi Rob, great video. I am spanish and i'm sports photography. I have a question for you but I don't know how to say it in English. ¿Cuál es el modo de enfoque que recomiendas? I've a problem while take a photos. I use sports lens 70-200mm 2.8 and I use usually aperture 2.8, but I can't get it to focus right. Thanks you for all.
I use canon 90d and the lens I use is 24-70f4 and these are the settings I use to shoot high school basketball 1/1000 f4 and auto do you think this good or can you help me I only do video cause I really don’t know how to shoot photos really thank you
Hi Rob, great video again. And thanks for your efforts. I know how much time you need to spend to create this content. Originally I’m coming from analog photography. So ISO/Aperture/Speed I had to learn the hard way (after one week the film was developed and no chance to redo the pictures). I even had to do manual light measuring in the snow, because the automatic was not trustworthy. What I found interesting is that younger people have troubles with the theory because I think especially the ISO (which is the sensitivity of a analog film) doesn‘t make sense on a digital camera. I will share your video with some beginners, so hopefully it will help them.
Thank you I appreciate the support as always. It's interesting hearing the view of someone who's come from shooting film. I did shoot film for fun when I was younger, but never with anything too serious.
My biggest challenge is noise in my basketball pictures. I'm running a 1Dx and 24-70 f/2.8 II, 1/1000, f/2.8 and auto ISO. The ISO ends up in the 4000-6000 range. I'm a hobbyist, taking pictures of my boys' high school sports (cross country, American football, basketball and track), so I don't want to have to buy a software subscription to edit and store my pictures. So, my question is this: do I just deal with the noise (I'm toying with RawTherapee, I have access to photoshop elements, and maybe I'll buy a denoise program like topaz) or should I manually lower the ISO to hopefully reduce noise, then adjust the exposure in post?
@@RobSambles i figured it out. i have a older camera the canon rebel xsi, so my iso only goes up to 1600. so i went down to 1/200 shutter speed and lowered my iso.
Great video but can I suggest that you work on sound quality and sound consistency? Sound is all over the place, offering constructive feedback. Liked.
@@kerrybelser Oh I see ok. If that's something in RUclips settings it should be easy enough to do. I might not be able to make all of my videos subtitles though
Part 2 will include some of the 'next step' like focus settings, file types etc.

Im using a canon 7d mkII with a 24-70 f2.8 L mk II lens and a Canon 80D with a 70-200mm L mk II would this kit be ok for a boxing tournament indoors?
Great video, thank you.
nice video! I followed all the steps and my it is just a black screen and black pictures how do I fix ????
Take your lens cap off
Rob, do you use a tripod to shoot football? If so, are these settings still applicable
The only way I can even see with my lens is if my ap is all the way up. Or my shutter speed is at like .8
well explained Rob
Thank you
Great Vid, Thank You.
Thanks for sharing
Nice one, Rob
I appreciate you always taking the time to comment Mr T
great video
Thank you so much.
thanks
great video! I appreciate it!
i did like the graph
When I put my shutter speed on 1/1000 of a second it’s so dark
You need to adjust either aperture or iso to make it brighter again. Watch my video on the exposure triangle
my pictures are just coming out as black when i have a higher shutter speed. help.
I would guess that's because there's not enough light getting into your lens. Watch my exposure triangle video

Very helpful indeed, I don’t subscribe easily! #subbed
It doesn't matter how perfect my settings, they are always pretty fuzzy. It really sucks and puts me off taking more photography :/
