Why do people hate Prog? Why is there not peace in the Middle East or Ukraine? Why is there cruelty to animals? Why is there racism in the world? Don't blame prog, blame people.
From my own circle of music listening friends, I’ve noticed that a large portion of the people that like Prog are musicians - or at least people who dig deeper into music than your average music listener. For those of us that have grown bored with the pop and punk basic format, Prog offers much more rewarding music for those that take the time to give it the attention it deserves.
I used to think that way, but I have branched out into so many other genres of music and I have found equally compelling listens in each of them. I'm not the average music listener. I listen to a lot of music. Thinking Prog is the only genre that offers a rewarding listen that takes time is pretty close minded.
I had a girlfriend that was a classical musician, she was very much into prog too. So I was coming from a rock background to prog, but that created an interesting dynamic between us. I'm not a musician myself, just to be clear about that,
I am worried about the next 15/20 years… when the generation that grew up with prog (people born in the 50s/early 60s) will gradually disappear, will classic prog still be remembered? I am 26 and I hope so 😃
You're 26, and you love prog, so that proves that younger folks still enjoy it. There are plenty of young bands that still make vital, exciting progressive music, it simply takes a little time and effort to find them.
"Prog works on a different intellectual level" Agree 100%. Minstrel in the Gallery still to this day is calisthenics for my brain. Sorting out all the different beats and appreciating the swing in the song is so interesting. Following the change in the music in Aqualung is like traversing the natural contours of a landscape. Prog imitates nature with all its complexity and variety much more than standard music does. That's what makes it so interesting. And therapeutic.
Yes!!! And Tull covers a lot of different sonic topography!!! Static music has its place (I love Ramones) but Prog attacks a different part of the brain!!!🧠
I reckon long songs is one of the main obstacles that some people have with prog along with the perception that it's all like ELP's most complex pieces. Attention span is something that we prog fans have that is sadly lacking for too many people.
Yeah... But...the general public used to be into long-winded classical music, once upon a time; so, there's always *that* argument. It definitely begs the question on whether we as a society have been duped by modern commerce, into having way shorter attention spans than previously (which would be *regressive,* may I add 😜).
Prog is for the thinking man / or woman although very rare , its complex , unusual time signatures, long suites , can be symphonic, it requires serious listening, which requires time and patience which some youngsters don't possess, and of course its for listening to not dancing, and if its on vinyl even better.

Another great thing about prog is that it keeps everyone guessing. Take a listen to Bel-Air by The Church - not strictly prog but more like art-rock. As one commenter said on The Church's RUclips channel, what is it? Is it pop, is it 80s psychedelia, is it indie? It's all of those things. That's what makes it so interesting to listen to.

It's the same way that some people don't dig math... or Baroque, Fantasy, Surrealism, Abstractionism, Expressionism, et al. But, damn... I don't mind a little Ramones after Gentle Giant. or some Yes after the Beatles. To each his (or hers) own. Peace on earth.
Excellent video I love progressive rock from more or less 1987 where I discovered this great musical theme with groups like King Crimson Moody Blues, it's crazy out there and all the rock classics, not just Kayak, Emerson Lake and Palmer, but all of them. these great musicians our great bands, Tks the prog corner, 🎩♿🚭💥
I could go on all day about prog rock. It got me through alot of stuff in the seventies and that core interest is what sealed the deal when i joined Acrylic Prism and met Kevin Koerber..Thirty years and alot of music later and im still a huge fan.. We used to buy alot at head shops and National record mart and many purchases were made by the album covers or word of mouth..Cool stuff..

Jethro Tull, Camel, Genesis, King Crimson, ELP. Pink Floyd and Yes will be always among my favorites (along with Rolling Stones, Doors, Beatles, Who, Kinks, CCR, David Bowie, Elton John, Neil Young, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Cream, Eric Clapton, Allman Brothers Band, Bob Dylan, The Byrds, The Band etc). The idea that punk signalled the death knell for prog is simply not born out by the facts. Just look at ticket/album sales for Genesis, Floyd,Tull, Yes etc compared to The Damned, Stanglers, Jam etc throughout 76 to 80. Figures don’t lie.
Great video! I was heavily into prog in the mid to late 70s. I continued to buy Camel, Yes, Genesis, etc into the 80s but barely listened to it because I was so into new wave & synth bands. It was until the 90s, after the 80s music ran its course and the dreaded grunge started, that I came full circle back to prog.
i worked myself backwards when it came to prog... got into bands like Opeth, Meshsuggah and Mastodon in my teens and wanted to know where the inspiration came from. Jethro Tull, Rush, Genesis are in my constant rotation of music i listen to now. Cant believe i slept on it for so many years.
I remember talking to this random woman once at a social event. We were talking about bands and I distinctly rember her saying that she hated Yes but she didn't give a reason. I have heard other people call them weird or say things like they can't get into them and not just about Yes but prog in general. A lot of people have no imagination. You have to have an imagination to like prog.

Too many folks want simple music is the primary reason. Too many folks just music to party to(Sex Drugs and RocknRoll). Even if prog is catchy, the fact it still sounds complicated will turn off some folks. And, some folks only want to listen to what is "popular "(or whatever adjective means popular)

Great video Scot! I remember back in the day (late 70s and 80s), Robert Hilburn was the big music critic for the LA Times and he wrote some scathing reviews of Yes and Jethro Tull. I saw Jethro Tull around that time and at one point during the show Ian Anderson yells out “Robert Hilburn “ just to hear all the boos 🤘😃 Long live Prog!!!!
My good friend Raccoon said he didn't like most of prog music because the songs lack a "steady" rhythm to which you can nod your head or tap your foot. xd He said that prog rock drum parts are often too busy for him to enjoy it.
Personally, I never hated Prog. Even when it was cool to do so during the disco, punk, new wave eras! I just started collecting all the back catalogues ,used ,of all the prog bands whose albums people were trading in during those days. That's not saying I didn't like new wave etc. Still have all those used records I bought at .50 cents to a dollar a pop. Kept them too, when vynly became uncool for a time.Personally, I think we are in the second golden age of Prog. Critics be damned .

1. People don’t hate Prog. They just don’t understand it, or even try. 2. Not all Prog is Rock. 3. “Prog Rock” belongs in a time capsule 1969-1974/5. That’s the image. However, Progressive Music is timeless. “The Planets” by Holst (1918) is as Progressive as you can get. “Welcome To the Pleasure Dome” was also impressively progressive. As is “The Likes of Us”. Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Jeff Wayne, Mike Oldfield, The Moody Blues, The Beatles, Rosalie Cunningham, King Crimson….just some of the stuff I listened to the last few days. Prog is insanely diverse.. Progressive music covers a lot of ground and has been going for more than 100 years! And still going strong!!
It's great that prog has had a resurgence in recent years. I think the decline in the quality of radio friendly music allowed those who were interested to discover new music and this has led to the mainstreaming of more complex sophisticated music.
Prog rock is NOT pretentious! It takes a lot of humility to present something to the public that is totally unique in the hopes that they will like it. Pretentious is thinking you can write the same i-iv-v-ii-i verse-chorus-bridge song better than the last guy. Pretentious is thinking you can play that same blues progression better than the last guy. There is NOTHING PRETENTIOUS about prog rock.
I think this can be said about any genre of music as everyone has their own opinions about every kind of music. But I get where you’re coming from as I hear a lot of folks trash on Prog and I think much of the hate is misplaced. But saying that, to me it’s not the Prog bands or the music that rubs me wrong, it’s a few of the Prog fans that get my goat! In my experience, there’s Prog fans that have this elitist attitude. In fact I’ll give you an example, When I discovered your channel I was so stoked to have found it! So much so that I did a little tribute video shouting out you and your channel! I was stunned to see comments from a Prog fans just ripping me a new one saying I had no idea what I was talking about and how I was an idiot who didn’t have a clue about Prog rock. Yeah I took a beating after releasing that video but only from a Prog fans! Kinda left a bad taste in my mouth. And that’s the vibe I get from some Prog fans! I love the genre and I rock Yes, ELP, Van Der Graf, Pink Floyd, Can, King Crimson & Soft Machine all the time! Especially dig the classic Prog Psych stuff too! But there are Prog fans out there that seem a bit pretentious. It’s too bad because it only adds fuel to the fire of Prog Hate. Anyway I’m rambling! Great video, Scot! I was one of the prog fans who did, largely, leave prog behind, for many years, for punk and indie rock. I had this ridiculous idea that if one liked punk and indie rock, one *had* to disdain prog. Where did I get this idea? Well, from certain "hipster" friends, who mercilessly ridiculed prog, and from rock critics like Lester Bangs. I finally realized they were wrong about that though. I came back to prog, and I'm not leaving!
Prog has served me well, lo, these many years. It has contributed to most of my lasting friendships. You can know alot about person by what he choses to listen to. I have become more tolerant over the years, but there was a time when as a much younger man than today, I would walk out of a house party because someone put the Stray Cats on the turntable. (and he was my connection back in the day🌴😁) ...good times...good times. Conversely I was an announcer on top 40 and AC predominately in those days and would usually go completely off script and tell the audience that (i.e. Genesis) is a much better band than their hits. I am proud to be a proghead. It's better than everything else, especially these days.
I started off with Prog, drifted into classical and opera for a decade, then back to prog...so now I listen to both with satisfaction. Love the complexity of it all. The emotional payback is worth the effort.
People that I know that hate prog are people that hate long songs(lack patience). As soon as my friend sees that a song is longer than 6 minutes, he immediately hates that song without hearing it, because according to him, songs have no reason to be that long. I've had patience since I was little, and that's why prog rock was a lot easier for me than for many, that's why I love jazz too!
Only when you've been listening to Prog for many decades ( as many viewers here I'm sure ) you realise the music seldom knocks you off your feet after one or two listens. It isn't Pop afterall , hence its not popular... it's gets under your skin and drip-feeds it's greatness over extended listening. I just think certain non believers simply don't have the patience , and subsequently find it boring. Shock / Horror....We all know different !!! Great stuff Scot. It makes sense why some people would hate it, some of these reasons are why prog rock hasn't always been for me. But I have listened to some prog rock before and I like it, but I would need to deep dive to see if my liking for it gets better. I have listened to 3 Yes albums, (The Yes Album, Fragile, and Close To The Edge) 4 Pink Floyd albums, (Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall) a Genesis album, (Selling England By The Pound) and a Rush album. (Moving Pictures) I have heard other songs from other albums from Yes, Pink Floyd, and Genesis, but I haven't listened to more full albums than what I listed. I hope to like it better than what I have before, but I also feel like pop rock is one of the main genres that has stuck with me my whole life. Also, I have a question, do you find Yes to be alternative rock because that's what a friend of mine said.
Most of it doesn’t work as background music (but some does…Tangerine Dream, some of the spacier Floyd stuff…some Oldfield stuff) so it often demands your complete attention if you want to follow along. It is rewarded by more “active listening” and is therefore not of interest to more casual music fans and you can’t really dance to a lot of it because of all the time changes. 95% of the world aren’t obsessive music nerds and use music as something to enhance other activities rather than as a primary form of entertainment. The upside is that those who are into prog are usually really really into prog and music in general and even do crazy things like watch guys on RUclips talk about it in those rare moments that they aren’t listening to it. 😂😂
Rush didn't get into the Hall of Fame because of Jann Wenner, they got in the Hall in spite of Jann Wenner. Rush got in because of the fans who wrote letters and started petitions to get Rush in, year after year. Famous fans, like Metallica, who spoke out publicly, "why is Rush not in the Hall of Fame?" It was our devotion to the music, our dedication to see Rush get their rightful honor, and our endless persistence that put them in the Hall. Jann Wenner was known to have said, "Rush will never get in as long as I'm alive." The fans made him eat those words.
I once read an article by Ian Anderson who described the downfall of Prog. He blamed the studios, pointing out that the executives had no control over the incredible musicians of the genre. The studios couldn't understand how fans were grouping these bands into a cohesive genre, and the executives had no ability to go into the studios and dictate to the bands how their albums should sound.
The subtitles keep saying ‘Prague Rock’. I’d like to hear that. I’m still exploring all the jazz that I missed from the 50’s 60’s and 70’s. When I’ve caught up I’ll start on Prog Rock, with a soupçon of Prague Rock for pudding.
Christgau didn't have much good to say about Prog, but he has occasionally said some rather remarkable things, in particular about the harmonic complexity of Firth of Fifth and Battle of Epping Forest.

Someone has to ask Dream Theater how they do the highly technical stuff they do as individual musicians and still bring it all together as tightly as they do. It's an amazing feat.
Prog or at least prog elements are blending in to pop music today. Check out Auroras last release A Soul with no king. Produced by Brian Eno. Aurora is a Norwegian Pop artist with Prog elements. All her albums are consept albums and the cover artwork is great. Her voice is beutiful and reminds me of Kalandra or the other way around.

Over the past few years I've seen some rock critics (in France ,I'm a french citizen and overseas too)demonizing prog rock with an impressive lack of good points.Some of them are really into punk rock and always come out with mantras such as Prog is soulless or bourgeois ,it's not rock n roll.Really annoying I don't care about below average musicians or people who think that being a capable musician is overrated and uncool.I don't look for the cool stuff in music I look for the good one
That is an incredible book. And no matter what people call them, I maintain that King Gizzard are a modern day prog dinosaur 😂 In addition, even rappers like Tyler The Creator and Lil Yachty have adopted prog/psych rock sounds for their own music and turning generations of young listeners on to this great stuff!
Prog the most reviled genre? No Way! In general, most people are just indifferent to it, and really don't think about it as an option. They don't listen to it, for some of the reasons you indicated, and have only a vague idea of what it is. But hate it? No. It constitutes such a small niche in the popular musical landscape these days, they just don't encounter it or care about it at all. I mean, other than Peter Gabriel (who is beyond prog) did you see ANY prog album mentioned in ANY list (in a non-prog publication or entity) for the best albums of the year last year (or any recent year)? Prog is not even in the conversation. But we know better! (BTW: most reviled genre is definitely disco).
It's like at your daily work when someone says to you .. haven't you seen this or that soap on tele? Those are the people who listen to commercial stuff on radio. They don't know if there is a Prog-scene or whatever. Well I am an amateur/ musician and live in Belgium. There are a lot of metal or indie or underground bands who got on stage. But yeah...they don't impress me much. I was a bass-player and played in a few rockbands in the 80's...Now that I'm a little bit older ;-) me and my wife started to play as a duo..after so many years from 9 to 7 or 5 bandmembers...you know what I mean.. Corona came along. They were all stiffly scared, but it didn't bother me to go further with the music I like. I write my own stuff , play acoustic 6 & 12 string guitar and my wife Yolande plays the clarinette and some small percussion and keyboards. You can call it prog-folk.We do gigs in houses and hopefully in some garden somewhere in summer! There is no stage for us...no pubs or whatever, we actually don't play covers( Pink Floyd for family maybe.. ;-)It is a trend to pay tribute to some bloody band. Not for me. It is hard. It's a little bit discouraging, but my music deserves more. I will play for the happy few I guess. Belgium...
Prog is an acquired taste....but there's a part of me that wishes it weren't. I feel so sorry for myself that prog didn't "click" until my late teens, I would have loved Supper's Ready when I was just getting into classic rock.
I always loved music that was challenging and different. I'm also very open-minded, but I hate what is obvious and predictable. There is nothing wrong with the 3 minute song, but what endures are those 70s prog classics.
One reason is because it is largely elusive to the casual listener. I’m bored by the virtuosity of Dream Theater who lack the songwriting brilliance of Chain Letter by Todd Rundgren for example. It defies to be categorized which is why it is so precious to those who can identify it.
It's funny how a lot of critics(with a few exceptions of course)back in the day actually gave good reviews of prog when it was new and exciting but when music was changing then the critics started changing their tune(no pun intended: ). 😁 So why is prog hated so much? I don't know, I guess it's a matter of most people not willing to go outside of their comfort zone. Most people seem to go with what's familiar to them. In some ways people have been brainwashed. They've become so familiar with strictly formatted music that they're bombarded with on the radio with its catchy hooks and infectious beats. That stuff is music that plays on their emotions. But prog on the other hand is a musical challenge. You have to fully engage your brain and I reckon most people aren't willing to do that. The only way to appreciate prog is to unlearn.
The only band that comes to mind from the classic period when people are negatively critiquing would be ELP. I love 25% of their stuff, a great appreciation for another 25% but around 50% of it comes across as silly or over the top.
Must admit when I was young, I avoided prog,except Rush but wouldn’t have they were prog. Decided during lockdown to investigate prog and found there was lots I liked, some a lot. Yet still 2 things I really don’t like Yes, TFTO for me all that I thought was bad about prog on one album. ELP tried a few times even now just don’t get it. Lots I do like though and now class myself as a prog fan.
I feel like one of the main things I come across as criticism of prog is the idea of its proponents of the genre are snobbish and think their music is just inherently better than anything else. And I mean, the fans can absolutely be like that, but I don't see many of the artists being like that, not on the whole, I think they just write what they like. And even if they are, my personal opinion is I don't care about whether they are, what matters more to me is how the songs sound. And while prog is probably my favorite, I still like a lot of other stuff too. Really I find that a lot of "oh, you think you're so much better than us" critiques prog music gets a lot are a bit of projection, at least at their most aggressive. Anti-elitism can turn to just actual elitism really fast, at least when it comes to subjective stuff like music taste. That's why I try to not be that sort of snob myself - it just really isn't necessary, different genres are just aiming for different targets and that's fine!
"Whitest genre" is a crazy statement, knowing how many rappers love to sample from that genre. MF DOOM, Kanye West, and Travis Scott are notable examples.
Well Scot, I could be wrong but I have a theory on one reason why prog is so hated. I think a lot of people don’t appreciate classical music, or may not even realize that it’s likely the biggest influence for prog musicians. After all, classical music has been around for centuries and was particularly huge in England. And how many great prog bands are British ? Well, I can’t count that high 😆. And here in the States, the more popular bands will always be The Eagles, Doobie Brothers, Creedence, Skynyrd and the Beach Boys. And that’s perfectly fine. I enjoy those bands as well. I’m not trying to conjure up a dispute between American roots rock vs the Brits. Plus, I haven’t forgotten about the Sex Pistols, and other British punk bands hatred towards Prog nation. But I just think it all boils down to the roots of when prog began. It wasn’t going to appeal to everyone. It’s just a matter of taste.
In the RS Book 50 greatest albums of all time. The only prog album listed is Close to the Edge at #445. Peter Gabriel’s SO at #297. Not even one single Tull album. However they give Pink Floyd 4 listings. So maybe they get a soft pass on including some prog. But how can an album like Court of the Crimson King not make the list!? That changed the direction of musical inventiveness and probably started the Prog movement. But they will give Kanye West and Neil Young 6 listings each!🤷🏼
I don't hate prog, but it's quite apparent the majority of prog musicians and I have very different opinions on how songs should be written. Neal Morse shows that you can be complicated and whatnot while still having engaging and catchy melodies, and then there are so, so many prog bands that sound offended by the idea of average listeners enjoying their music. The mentality that great musicianship is the most important thing holds no appeal to me. Heck, I play guitar, and the last thing I want to do is listen to five minutes of guitar solos.
Sometimes I think prog gets a bad reputation not because of the music itself, but because of its fanbase. As much as I love prog, there's no denying that its fans can be quite snobbish, always pratting on about the supposed "intellectualism" of the music and talking down to and/or making stupid assumptions about those who can't get into it. Many prog fans also tend to divide all music into two categories -- "prog" and "pop" -- and judge music solely by which category they think it falls under, regardless of how often the two genres overlap.

"Prog works on a different intellectual level" Agree 100%. Minstrel in the Gallery still to this day is calisthenics for my brain. Sorting out all the different beats and appreciating the swing in the song is so interesting. Following the change in the music in Aqualung is like traversing the natural contours of a landscape. Prog imitates nature with all its complexity and variety much more than standard music does. That's what makes it so interesting. And therapeutic.

I reckon long songs is one of the main obstacles that some people have with prog along with the perception that it's all like ELP's most complex pieces. Attention span is something that we prog fans have that is sadly lacking for too many people.

Yeah... But...the general public used to be into long-winded classical music, once upon a time; so, there's always *that* argument. It definitely begs the question on whether we as a society have been duped by modern commerce, into having way shorter attention spans than previously (which would be *regressive,* may I add 😜).

The idea that punk signalled the death knell for prog is simply not born out by the facts. Just look at ticket/album sales for Genesis, Floyd,Tull, Yes etc compared to The Damned, Stanglers, Jam etc throughout 76 to 80. Figures don’t lie.
Great video! I was heavily into prog in the mid to late 70s. I continued to buy Camel, Yes, Genesis, etc into the 80s but barely listened to it because I was so into new wave & synth bands. It was until the 90s, after the 80s music ran its course and the dreaded grunge started, that I came full circle back to prog.

i worked myself backwards when it came to prog... got into bands like Opeth, Meshsuggah and Mastodon in my teens and wanted to know where the inspiration came from. Jethro Tull, Rush, Genesis are in my constant rotation of music i listen to now. Cant believe i slept on it for so many years.

I remember talking to this random woman once at a social event. We were talking about bands and I distinctly rember her saying that she hated Yes but she didn't give a reason. I have heard other people call them weird or say things like they can't get into them and not just about Yes but prog in general. A lot of people have no imagination. You have to have an imagination to like prog.

Too many folks want simple music is the primary reason. Too many folks just music to party to(Sex Drugs and RocknRoll). Personally, I never hated Prog. Even when it was cool to do so during the disco, punk, new wave eras! I just started collecting all the back catalogues ,used ,of all the prog bands whose albums people were trading in during those days. That's not saying I didn't like new wave etc. Still have all those used records I bought at .50 cents to a dollar a pop. Kept them too, when vynly became uncool for a time.Personally, I think we are in the second golden age of Prog. Critics be damned .

1. People don’t hate Prog. They just don’t understand it, or even try.
2. Not all Prog is Rock.
3. “Prog Rock” belongs in a time capsule 1969-1974/5. That’s the image. However, Progressive Music is timeless.
“The Planets” by Holst (1918) is as Progressive as you can get. “Welcome To the Pleasure Dome” was also impressively progressive. As is “The Likes of Us”.
Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Jeff Wayne, Mike Oldfield, The Moody Blues, The Beatles, Rosalie Cunningham, King Crimson….just some of the stuff I listened to the last few days. Prog is insanely diverse..

It's great that prog has had a resurgence in recent years. I think the decline in the quality of radio friendly music allowed those who were interested to discover new music and this has led to the mainstreaming of more complex sophisticated music.

I think this can be said about any genre of music as everyone has their own opinions about every kind of music. But I get where you’re coming from as I hear a lot of folks trash on Prog and I think much of the hate is misplaced. But saying that, to me it’s not the Prog bands or the music that rubs me wrong, it’s a few of the Prog fans that get my goat! In my experience, there’s Prog fans that have this elitist attitude. In fact I’ll give you an example, When I discovered your channel I was so stoked to have found it! So much so that I did a little tribute video shouting out you and your channel! I was stunned to see comments from a Prog fans just ripping me a new one saying I had no idea what I was talking about and how I was an idiot who didn’t have a clue about Prog rock. Yeah I took a beating after releasing that video but only from a Prog fans! Kinda left a bad taste in my mouth. And that’s the vibe I get from some Prog fans!
I love the genre and I rock Yes, ELP, Van Der Graf, Pink Floyd, Can, King Crimson & Soft Machine all the time! Especially dig the classic Prog Psych stuff too! But there are Prog fans out there that seem a bit pretentious. It’s too bad because it only adds fuel to the fire of Prog Hate. Anyway I’m rambling! Great video, Scot! I was one of the prog fans who did, largely, leave prog behind, for many years, for punk and indie rock. I had this ridiculous idea that if one liked punk and indie rock, one *had* to disdain prog. Where did I get this idea? Well, from certain "hipster" friends, who mercilessly ridiculed prog, and from rock critics like Lester Bangs. I finally realized they were wrong about that though. I came back to prog, and I'm not leaving!

Prog has served me well, lo, these many years. It has contributed to most of my lasting friendships. You can know alot about person by what he choses to listen to. I have become more tolerant over the years, but there was a time when as a much younger man than today, I would walk out of a house party because someone put the Stray Cats on the turntable. (and he was my connection back in the day🌴😁) ...good times...good times. Conversely I was an announcer on top 40 and AC predominately in those days and would usually go completely off script and tell the audience that (i.e. Genesis) is a much better band than their hits. I am proud to be a proghead. It's better than everything else, especially these days.

I started off with Prog, drifted into classical and opera for a decade, then back to prog...so now I listen to both with satisfaction. Love the complexity of it all. The emotional payback is worth the effort.

People that I know that hate prog are people that hate long songs(lack patience).
As soon as my friend sees that a song is longer than 6 minutes, he immediately hates that song without hearing it, because according to him, songs have no reason to be that long.
I've had patience since I was little, and that's why prog rock was a lot easier for me than for many, that's why I love jazz too!
An appreciation of classical music and the longer structures of symphonic pieces definitely helped me…
Only when you've been listening to Prog for many decades ( as many viewers here I'm sure ) you realise the music seldom knocks you off your feet after one or two listens. It isn't Pop afterall , hence its not popular... it's gets under your skin and drip-feeds it's greatness over extended listening. I just think certain non believers simply don't have the patience , and subsequently find it boring. Shock / Horror....We all know different !!!

It makes sense why some people would hate it, some of these reasons are why prog rock hasn't always been for me. But I have listened to some prog rock before and I like it, but I would need to deep dive to see if my liking for it gets better. I have listened to 3 Yes albums, (The Yes Album, Fragile, and Close To The Edge) 4 Pink Floyd albums, (Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall) a Genesis album, (Selling England By The Pound) and a Rush album. (Moving Pictures) I have heard other songs from other albums from Yes, Pink Floyd, and Genesis, but I haven't listened to more full albums than what I listed. I hope to like it better than what I have before, but I also feel like pop rock is one of the main genres that has stuck with me my whole life.

Most of it doesn’t work as background music (but some does…Tangerine Dream, some of the spacier Floyd stuff…some Oldfield stuff) so it often demands your complete attention if you want to follow along. It is rewarded by more “active listening” and is therefore not of interest to more casual music fans and you can’t really dance to a lot of it because of all the time changes. 95% of the world aren’t obsessive music nerds and use music as something to enhance other activities rather than as a primary form of entertainment. The upside is that those who are into prog are usually really really into prog and music in general and even do crazy things like watch guys on RUclips talk about it in those rare moments that they aren’t listening to it. 😂😂

Rush got in because of the fans who wrote letters and started petitions to get Rush in, year after year. Famous fans, like Metallica, who spoke out publicly, "why is Rush not in the Hall of Fame?" It was our devotion to the music, our dedication to see Rush get their rightful honor, and our endless persistence that put them in the Hall.
Jann Wenner was known to have said, "Rush will never get in as long as I'm alive." The fans made him eat those words.

I once read an article by Ian Anderson who described the downfall of Prog. He blamed the studios, pointing out that the executives had no control over the incredible musicians of the genre. The studios couldn't understand how fans were grouping these bands into a cohesive genre, and the executives had no ability to go into the studios and dictate to the bands how their albums should sound.

Over the past few years I've seen some rock critics (in France ,I'm a french citizen and overseas too)demonizing prog rock with an impressive lack of good points.Some of them are really into punk rock and always come out with mantras such as Prog is soulless or bourgeois ,it's not rock n roll.Really annoying I don't care about below average musicians or people who think that being a capable musician is overrated and uncool.I don't look for the cool stuff in music I look for the good one

Prog the most reviled genre? No Way! In general, most people are just indifferent to it, and really don't think about it as an option. They don't listen to it, for some of the reasons you indicated, and have only a vague idea of what it is. But hate it? No. It constitutes such a small niche in the popular musical landscape these days, they just don't encounter it or care about it at all. I mean, other than Peter Gabriel (who is beyond prog) did you see ANY prog album mentioned in ANY list (in a non-prog publication or entity) for the best albums of the year last year (or any recent year)? Prog is not even in the conversation. But we know better! (BTW: most reviled genre is definitely disco).

It's like at
your daily work when someone says to you .. haven't you seen this or that soap on tele? Those are the people who listen to commercial stuff on radio. They don't know if there is a Prog-scene or whatever. Well I am an amateur/ musician and live in Belgium. There are a lot of metal or indie or underground bands who got on stage. But yeah...they don't impress me much. I was a bass-player and played in a few rockbands in the 80's...Now that I'm a little bit older ;-) me and my wife started to play as a duo..after so many years from 9 to 7 or 5 bandmembers...you know what I mean.. Corona came along. They were all stiffly scared, but it didn't bother me to go further with the music I like. I write my own stuff , play acoustic 6 & 12 string guitar and my wife Yolande plays the clarinette and some small percussion and keyboards. You can call it prog-folk.We do gigs in houses and hopefully in some garden somewhere in summer! There is no stage for us...no pubs or whatever, we actually don't play covers( Pink Floyd for family maybe.. ;-)It is a trend to pay tribute to some bloody band. Not for me. It is hard. It's a little bit discouraging, but my music deserves more. I will play for the happy few I guess. Belgium...

Practically all the hate toward prog comes from critics. I've never seen the general public show that much hostility toward it.

I dont think its hated, most people I know don't even know what it is.
One reason is because it is largely elusive to the casual listener. I’m bored by the virtuosity of Dream Theater who lack the songwriting brilliance of Chain Letter by Todd Rundgren for example. It defies to be categorized which is why it is so precious to those who can identify it.

It's funny how a lot of critics(with a few exceptions of course)back in the day actually gave good reviews of prog when it was new and exciting but when music was changing then the critics started changing their tune(no pun intended: ). 😁 So why is prog hated so much? I don't know, I guess it's a matter of most people not willing to go outside of their comfort zone. Most people seem to go with what's familiar to them. In some ways people have been brainwashed. They've become so familiar with strictly formatted music that they're bombarded with on the radio with its catchy hooks and infectious beats. That stuff is music that plays on their emotions. But prog on the other hand is a musical challenge. You have to fully engage your brain and I reckon most people aren't willing to do that. The only way to appreciate prog is to unlearn.
You have to surrender to the artist and the journey they wish to take you on - and most people can’t/won’t do that!!!
The only band that comes to mind from the classic period when people are negatively critiquing would be ELP. I love 25% of their stuff, a great appreciation for another 25% but around 50% of it comes across as silly or over the top.

Must admit when I was young, I avoided prog,except Rush but wouldn’t have they were prog. Decided during lockdown to investigate prog and found there was lots I liked, some a lot. Yet still 2 things I really don’t like Yes, TFTO for me all that I thought was bad about prog on one album. ELP tried a few times even now just don’t get it.
Lots I do like though and now class myself as a prog fan.

I feel like one of the main things I come across as criticism of prog is the idea of its proponents of the genre are snobbish and think their music is just inherently better than anything else. And I mean, the fans can absolutely be like that, but I don't see many of the artists being like that, not on the whole, I think they just write what they like. And even if they are, my personal opinion is I don't care about whether they are, what matters more to me is how the songs sound. And while prog is probably my favorite, I still like a lot of other stuff too. Really I find that a lot of "oh, you think you're so much better than us" critiques prog music gets a lot are a bit of projection, at least at their most aggressive. Anti-elitism can turn to just actual elitism really fast, at least when it comes to subjective stuff like music taste. That's why I try to not be that sort of snob myself - it just really isn't necessary, different genres are just aiming for different targets and that's fine!

Well Scot, I could be wrong but I have a theory on one reason why prog is so hated. I think a lot of people don’t appreciate classical music, or may not even realize that it’s likely the biggest influence for prog musicians. After all, classical music has been around for centuries and was particularly huge in England. And how many great prog bands are British ? Well, I can’t count that high 😆. And here in the States, the more popular bands will always be The Eagles, Doobie Brothers, Creedence, Skynyrd and the Beach Boys. And that’s perfectly fine. I enjoy those bands as well. I’m not trying to conjure up a dispute between American roots rock vs the Brits. Plus, I haven’t forgotten about the Sex Pistols, and other British punk bands hatred towards Prog nation. But I just think it all boils down to the roots of when prog began. It wasn’t going to appeal to everyone. It’s just a matter of taste.

In the RS Book 50 greatest albums of all time. The only prog album listed is Close to the Edge at #445. Peter Gabriel’s SO at #297. Not even one single Tull album. However they give Pink Floyd 4 listings. So maybe they get a soft pass on including some prog. But how can an album like Court of the Crimson King not make the list!? That changed the direction of musical inventiveness and probably started the Prog movement. But they will give Kanye West and Neil Young 6 listings each!🤷🏼

I don't hate prog, but it's quite apparent the majority of prog musicians and I have very different opinions on how songs should be written. Neal Morse shows that you can be complicated and whatnot while still having engaging and catchy melodies, and then there are so, so many prog bands that sound offended by the idea of average listeners enjoying their music. The mentality that great musicianship is the most important thing holds no appeal to me. Heck, I play guitar, and the last thing I want to do is listen to five minutes of guitar solos.

Sometimes I think prog gets a bad reputation not because of the music itself, but because of its fanbase. As much as I love prog, there's no denying that its fans can be quite snobbish, always pratting on about the supposed "intellectualism" of the music and talking down to and/or making stupid assumptions about those who can't get into it. Many prog fans also tend to divide all music into two categories -- "prog" and "pop" -- and judge music solely by which category they think it falls under, regardless of how often the two genres overlap.
I think there may be some truth to that.
