The electric car market needed this to get actual petrol heads interested in electric cars. This is truly the first electric car I have any interest in. There is more to the driving experience then just acceleration and this one checks a lot of the boxes!
Someone was going to figure it out. Too much money and opportunity NOT to figure it out. Rode in a modified Porsche 911 (must be 2000 or older) with an electric motor AND you had to shift gears. No gimic. Most exciting time for cars since the turn of the 20th century.

In track driving, managing the weight or the rotation of the car (in addition to speed and acceleration) is critical. The best way to manage weight is by being able to quickly manipulate G forces and you do that with gear shifts. Slam into the right gear at the right time and the weight shift is quicker than micromanaging speed with just throttle control. What Hyundai has done is to take the idea of gear control and digitize a DCT program for electric motors. In the Ioniq 5 N you can slam it into a regen gear (a torque band) using the left/right paddle shifters (0.6G at the highest in the Ioniq) similar to downshifting/upshifting. And the shift changes, when amplified with sound, registers much quicker in the brain. In the track, attack a turn with DCT gear shifts versus a single-speed automatic transmission and you’ll get the idea of the difference. Electric cars have always had the potential for regen and torque shifting but it took Hyundai to implement it just right in the Ioniq 5 N synthesizing a DCT feel and RPM feedback. It’s what performance track drivers have been waiting for. Electric cars will never be the same. I for one think straight-line acceleration is a nice trick but it’s a stale trick now that most electric cars can achieve a decent 0-60 time. EV performance driving is the new frontier. Tesla is going to be stale if they just rely on 0-60 times. You can bet BMW and Audi are back on the drawing board.

In particular, as a left-foot braker in formula and GT race cars, he enjoyed the N-car's ability to transition rapidly from lift-off to strong braking. Corner grip and drive was also amazing, especially on less than perfect roads. I thought he wouldn't be a big fan of the simulated gearshifts but he naturally gravitated to using the "gears" manually through the paddles to assist turn-in and to help throttle-steer the car. Totally convincing.
Children need fake noises. Silent torque is for adults. Why is ice propulsion the "best", don't you miss all the "character " of a steam engine? What about a horse? You don't miss those sounds? Why?

But Hyundai understands that, even though "petrol" DCT gearbox mode is technically slower if you let it fall out of the optimal rev band, the race /test drivers I've spoken with prefer to use the DCT mode - as the "gears" given them the reference points they use and enjoy. THe torque band is still massive. And they can still hear tyres and suspension. And lap times are essentially the same - both blisteringly fast. So as a race driver, I totally get it. It's easy to be an armchair critic, but this is the first EV noise maker that is actually useful. Everything before has been just a gimmick. Even the Taycan Turbo, which I found didn't add anything, and was a $1025 option as well. No thanks. But on the IONIQ 5N, it's actually is useful. So you can have silent, or noise with 1 gear, or noise with 8 gears.

The funny thing is - I'm finding that petrol car lovers don't mind the noise, but EV owners with cars that don't make a noise (e.g. some Tesla owners) start frothing at the mouth about the noise. They really hate it. Petrol car people don't care either way. As for speed, I'd say no - in the hands of an experienced track driver, I think they'll get the same lap times in whatever mode. Maybe less than a second a lap difference at SMP (our local track) either way. For some drivers, I would expect noise-mode with DCT could be faster. So no - I'm not saying that at all. In a car with more than enough power to break traction out of the corners, the DCT mode with noise will be just as fast on the track in the hands of an experienced race driver.
Agree. In Ausralia this car costs over $120k. That's equivalent to US $79k. But in USA they're under $70k. We pay a AU$ 15k price premium .. for ... what exactly? Oh that's right. A Luxury Car Tax to protect our local manufacturing industry. That we don't have any more.
Why do driving sim games have sound simulating race cars? It is so you can use audio to cue your corner entry speed so you don't need to divert your gaze from the track.
Go for a ride and you'll understand. The more of the 5 senses you have, the more the engagement. Sight, Sound, Touch, Smell. Maybe not taste. And maybe not the smell of my balaclava after a track day. Sure I enjoy the "silent but deadly" mode, but audio cues are helpful when driving quickly.
