First lesson about aug chords that really made me hear them differently and understand more about their characteristic. How come noone teaches us about aug chords symmetry! And your progression examples are really fantastic, thanks!
Congratulations dude you are totally the first person that has made any sense of theory for me. I watch and rewatch (and rewatch) so could be just the 'sinking in' thing but I'm pretty sure its your explanations. This lesson in particular. Thank you.
Great explanation. In some music theory classes they usually explain the augmented chords but not how to use them in a key context, what is the most important thing.

Dayyumm one of the best lessons I've learned since the quarantine. This is a gateway chord! Could you expand as to how it relates to the whole tone scale???
Due to symmetry, augmented chords divide the octave in three equal parts (12/3 = 4) and it implies that augmented chords have four possibilities of transposition (C-E-G#, Db-F-A, D-F#-A#, Eb-G-B). By means of enharmonic spelling, an only augmented chord has three possibilities of resolution. For instance, CAug (C-E-G#) can resolve into a F major chord, into a Db major chord (Ab-C-E leads to Db major ) and into a A major chord (E-G#-B# leads to A major). All these resolution chords have a intervalic relation of major third each other. Excellent channel and video. Greetings from Bogotá, Colombia.
Excellent. I knew about the symmetry of diminished chords (based on an octave consisting of 3 stacked minor 3rds) but I never thought about a symmetry based on major 3rds.
I cannot praise this channel highly enough. These videos are so informative and helpful, can't wait for the next one whatever the topic is going to be!
Amazing job you've been doing with this channel! Let me tell you I am from Guatemala and just found it! And I was so educated with only one vídeo I just watched and from now on totally suscribed and aware in order to get mire vídeos and learn! THANK YOU from the deep of my heart!
Short version for those who already know the basics of functional harmony, and who are here mostly for music theory: augmented chords tend to function as either less stable mediants or dominants without the tritone - and they're symmetrical, so you can invert them as much as you like without changing any of the internal intervals. (I'm mostly explaining this to myself, but if it helps someone else understand things a little better I consider that a good thing)
Yeah actually can be function for resolution too Tonic or chord changes ( same function like diminished). We can go Melodic minor half step above root of chord ( + ), and whole tone on root of chord exactly.
Good lesson mate 👍 I don't use augmented chords very often - I think Oh Darling by the Beatles is about the only one I know, with the 1st chord being E aug if I'm not mistaken...... But now I'm very confused. The D7 chord @ 06:11. I always play D7 as fret 2 on the high E & G strings and fret 1 on the B string.....but your D7 is on frets 2,3,5 on the high E, B, and G strings respectively. Why is that please? Is it a different D7? What sorcery is this?
+Jammy Git It's just a different ordering of tones from 4th to 1st string. By placing the b7 on the 3rd string we can create a smoother voice leading effect as per the example. Love the name btw!
As always at the top.i always enjoy whatever you droped here since. i just have small question. if you don't mind .what software do you always use for your guitar lessons? thanks in advance.
Error at 21:20 none of those chords are sharped, should just be Dm7b5 / G13 / C+M7 / Cadd6/9. The guitar fretting is also offset by 1 fret because of this
@@fretjamguitar No worries, your videos are very useful and well-thought out, just wanted to make sure that others viewing and trying to follow along didn't get stumped or anything. Great content all around
Hi! coming soon I buy your course, this argoment are present in the books? are there a list of progressions similar to this one? and in general, are there a list of common and uncommon progressions? I'm curious! your video are amazing!
Thank you for this video, it’s amazing how something I have always found confusing because of the terminology used, can be shown so simply. I have a few questions though, that I think has an obvious answer but...the Augmented chord is a major chord? When you replaced the Bm with it, it changed to a B7 which is a Dominant 7 right? (I know you said it’s an ‘altered’ dom7 so I get that bit) but you showed it from the 4th chord, the 5th and now changing the m3 to a Major....! Still confused.
No!, thanks to you for the time you take to make these videos, which surely must be a lot. Thanks for the information and the excellent way to teach you have, greetings and have an excellent year!

First time augmented chords have made sense! AMAZING!
Thank you. 😀
The best free guitar lesson i've ever seen. Thank you so much for sharing.
The best lesson on augmented chords. The examples used for application is amazing. Most people never go into how to use these chords. Amazing job.
I cannot thank you enough for your lessons. These are just so brilliant and well structured!
Great lesson as usual. This one specifically opened new doors for me. Thanks Mike.
Glad it helped. It's been a while, but new lesson on its way tomorrow.

Awesome video! The Guess Who's "Laughing" and Oasis' "Let There Be Love" use augmented chords unashamedly. Love it!
Oh yeh "Let There Be Love" is a beautiful example of an augmented tonic chord.
Your lessons are really something else. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, truly. Great work!!

An absolutely fantastic explanation. Thank you.
Very enjoyable lesson. It is truly clear and it has got me nearer to understand the augmented chords. + in fact nice progressions.

The chord progression at 5:59 is actually the same chord progression as Last Night on Earth by Green Day and No 1 Party Anthem by Arctic Monkeys
These graphics are the very best; we see the fretboard from the angle of the player, not upside own; and no video fingers obstructing what's going on.

Yep. Silly mistake. Don't even know how this happened! At least the shapes are movable so it's not too much of a big deal.

The augmented is the only chord moved a major third to create it's own inversion?
Try a dim7 chord move a minor third, same thing!
