America's Legendary Sinking Town | The Curse & The Jubilee | Real Stories Indie Doc

- In the late 1800s, traveling preacher Robert Sheffey cursed the town of Ivanhoe, Virginia, after witnessing what one female resident describes as “houses of ill repute, fighting, drunkenness, and a rejection of his ministry by the townspeople.”
Legend has it that Sheffey condemned the sinful town to sink into the earth and be consumed by the pits of hell. “Whether you believe in it or not, after that happened, we lost everything,” says the same Ivanhoe resident in this short documentary. “We have nothing.” Today, Ivanhoe is even plagued by sinkholes-multiple houses have disappeared entirely into the earth.

Love the background music , live music , people and old country town!
Bless the camera guy @9:56; following ol’ Elmer Fudd into the unknown. 😂
Dr. Kitty McFluffyballs 😂😂
I was thinking the same thing. lmao
This is what the country thinks the entire south is like.
So true and very very wrong.I'm from Tennessee but moved to Mass and you wouldn't believe the offensive questions/comments I have to correct about the south.
H Tompkins it’s a shame they are so narrow-minded. There are great people who live in these places.
This is what the WORLD thinks all of America is like!
@@mattkaustickomments true 😂
Yep
The guy in the beginnings hillbilly accent is so strong I thought he said "this used to be a old squirrel house" lol but he said school.
You were probably right the first time
As someone who isn't a native to the english language I'm having a hard time keeping up with what some of these people are saying😂
@@LinnYangXin English IS my native language and I'm having trouble understanding too! ☺
It's crazy to see my home being highlighted and recognized outside of its bounds. I grew up here until I turned 18 and would ride the bus through down-town, was always sad I never got to go to the Ivanhoe school since it was rubble. I lived deep in Ivanhoe beyond the main town, it's actually a massive place, this video and many others only show a small glimpse of it. There's legends even of creatures and oddities that are all local, it's a beautiful, yet mysterious land that truly seemed forgotten, but thank you for showing this place for the rest of the world to know.
At first I was like, well the whole “sinking town” part was really a very minor thing in the whole documentary, but then I was like ohhhh...I see what they did there.
Yeah, not like Manhattan or Venice where the whole city sinks in unison, but I knew a guy there who had a sink hole open in his driveway on the state right of way, and the county dumped several loads of gravel to fill it in, and had to do repeats--and I had to drive over it for my job! Don't know about that whole house going in that the young fellow mentions, but the town *is* built over existing lead mines. Some of them wonder about the water.
The land that time forgot.
Did that guy just say crack is like medicine...?
Yeah "they got no stores" they get their meds from the dealer lol.
He said crank---- crystal meth 😬
He is right, methamphetamines will wake u up if ur tired. On the other hand, so will coffee and sleeping at night
@@CH-vm6cq I'm from the south and hate it when we are stereotyped. These are the type of PEOPLE that would literally give you their last dollar. I'm from Arkansas and I love my heritage. There is good and bad in it and it is mine.

My ancestors came from Scotland and worked in the Virginia Coal mines and stayed here. I’m proud of that history and proud of the southerns keeping the faith!
M Smith me too!! Love our culture and our people here. No better people in the world
Wow, it's crazy how there are towns like this just hours away from us in Northern VA. Completely different lifestyles. I will say, i am jealous of the slow pace of life they have there.
It’s a mining town, sinkholes should be expected. The soil becomes weaker it will try to spread making the land more hollow.
John Christian De Guzman unfortunately it's hard to understand what they are saying. They are so inbreed it's sad. The title is oddly a double entendres.
15:40 you have to be a strong person because you go without. gets winded and breaks a sweat eating lunch. 17:26 another strong person going without. 10:56 now i see why the Hostess snack shelf was empty at the local market.
Some people have health issues that keep them big. Also, going without does not necessarily mean going without food.

Saw this under a different name - "Inside a Cursed Appalachian Mining Town". Still good.
This was a really good short documentary.
I was expecting to hear about sinkholes a little more...

I love your phenomenal content. Keep them coming in
Stuck in the delusion of Religion😞
Wow some of these people are crazy! No wonder the preacher cursed the town. It hasn't changed.
Its a shame these peoples world view hasn't grown large enough to appreciate that the same thing has happened to places all over that were never "cursed"
Trust me, judgement is terrible.
@@MrBlitz-kr2wo lol. Yeah, sure your right
I can't understand why so many comments have to be putting down or making fun of these poor people. Only God can judge. Those comments are not necessary. Should be so ashamed. I pray that not any of you all will not ever have to live that hard life. May GOD BLESS you all.
Donna Fancher thank you so much! I wholeheartedly agree
It’s because it is so easy to make fun of them. Proud Klansmen, endorsers of meth, the hardworking obese, tobacco spitters, etc. What’s so hard to understand?
They lost my empathy when he started bragging about being in the Klan.
The whole town?
I doubt its the whole town, I hope not. I've never been there so I am not knowledgeable enough to say. However I will admit I was interested in visiting, learning about the community, and it's history. That was until I saw the gentleman proudly proclaiming he is an active Klansman. Yes I know everyone has a right to their own beliefs, however if those beliefs are practiced publicly( or in the shadows) and they marginalize, judge, threaten, or harm others then it's not acceptable. I was sad to see they profess being a "strong, tight, and tight" community who "helps thier neighbors". Yet ots a community divided. I saw no representation of "all" of their community members and neighbors in the 4th of July parade, Jubilee, or the young ladies crowned that years queens. That is truly sad. Maybe that so called curse would dissipate if they actually applied the Golden Rule to everyone in town. Not just a certain demographic. Or maybe I'm just a naive fool. Either way the history, folklore, geography, and geology of the town are interesting. Maybe they can capatilize on the peace and quiet, gorgeous nature, folklore, and living history of the town and create an earning collective to revive the income, residents, and infrastructure of the town. The natural resources and drive are there, if only they can ALL come together. If only, if only.
That's a bunch of BS my whole family lives there except those of us who ventured out
Anyone else bust out laughing when the giant lady said there arent any slackers or week people in their town.
Zach hunt 👍
You need to check what you write before you post it because it's"WEAK' not WEEK, the way you've spelt it is the 7 day week.
Zach hunt - No, it wasn’t funny
Zach hunt no but I laughed at you because you can’t even spell the right word

“This year, I’m gonna ride the Lawn-mower in the Parade” . . . Aww, so sweet !
I think this is the inspiration for paint your wagon, the town gets cursed by a traveling preacher and sinks
His accent was so strong in the beginning that i literally thought he was speaking another language!
Well, people wonder where stereotypes come from... Look at these people, stop wondering 😂
exacly what i was thinking lol
I wish the children were able to get an education. But, these people will take care of each other and help each other. That a treasure in today's world.
Edit - except for the KKK jerk 🤦♀️
Lol, the store well stocked with Mountain Dew, Twinkies, chips, & the guy talking about how crank, like a medicine, helps him work better. The kkk guy was a real charmer as well. Casting agents for Deliverance 2 look no further. 🤮
Makepeace aka Miss Tickletoby you got that right! this right here is the reason education is so important. these poor children are doomed. and the fact that these people think they’re above anybody is truly hilarious. they’re the dregs of society.
this is why you shouldn’t procreating with your kin
Wow! Such Beautiful Country!!!! That would've devastated me!!!
Can’t wait to be back!
I thought this would be a look at a town with a sinking problem. Instead it's just a load of people speaking gibberish.
The house on the splash page belonged to my grandparents. It burnt a few years after my grandmother was moved to a nursing home.
Do you ever come back to the area? And if so can you explain to people that these people aren't hillbillies? They are good hard working people who just enjoy a quite life. I know several people who live there that work at Volvo PepsiCo ect.
9:13 Yea I bet, I think we all know what she's referring to. I know it's a stereotype but at some point you just gotta wonder.
Yeah, she says if you're weak you won't survive there N you have to work hard to get anywhere..... Umm, hypocrite!
I'm sorry but she grossed me out, no need to be that size. She'll have a heart attack soon.
I am a direct descendant of Robert Salyers Sheffey. My mother's paternal grandmother was Virginia Ellen Sheffey-Hoback of Wytheville, Va. I found this show interesting as I've always been told the tales of the power of grandpa sheffey's prayer. if anyone could set a "curse" on a place, and have it stick, it'd be him.
Yeah, he was a powerful preacher, and I think I'm related through my children, but I don't think it was effectively a curse, per se, but more of an anointed summation or prediction. The NT tells us to "bless, and do not curse" and Christ did give preachers occasions to "shake the dust off ... as a testimony" and I'm confident Sheffey understood both of these well, but the locals are going to get it into the form of a legend just a little bit, don't they always in every place?

I live in a little old town in Devon England, reminds me a lot of your community in many ways.
dom garrett many of us are Scott’s English. Our southern slang is a blend of old world English and new world. And the cadence of the accents are ancestral from your very neck of the woods We have many similarities and customs. We are a proud and generous people.
Paula T you know, some local people here in Devon told me many years ago, they had visited a few places in your area, and were totally astounded to hear them talk with our unique Devon drawl, never really thought Much of it at the time, will have to come see,or hear for myself before I git to old,ha,all the best to you.
dom garrett I took a class in Appalachian culture and read that that is why our language tone and cadence is so similar. I was amazed. Watch a lot of documentaries about England and Ireland and many sayings and expressions are very close or verbatim. You live in a beautiful country also. That's actually a pretty progressive church in the South, to have a woman preaching, and for black and white people to worship together. Controversial for a lot of older Southerners.
Sherri Smith no not in ALL areas, we are just like you. It’s the few who remain hate filled, and we see it all over the us from the cities to the suburban areas and the country, it’s not just here
@@steelmagnolia4934 I live in rural East Tennessee, about two hours drive from Ivanhoe, VA, and attend a church where a husband and wife quit because we had a woman preacher ONE TIME, so I know what I'm talking about. But I agree that attitudes are changing, and that racism and sexist behavior exist everywhere there are people.
Sherri Smith unfortunately even people who attend church are wrongheaded and intolerant sometimes. I agree that there are changes taking place and for the betterment of our communities. Small rural areas are slow to change but it is happening.
