    1:50 lick played slowly/how to play the lick
    4:50 how we learn to pick
    5:45 what is downward pickslanting and how do i do it?!
    6:40 what is upward pickslanting and how do i do that too?!?!
    7:50 two way pickslanting: the final frontier, and how to know which slant to use
    10:17 changing pick slant mid-lick
    11:11 the lick with slant flips
    Hey kids!!!! Uncle Ben Eller is here with a sick lick for Weekend Wankshop 124. This lick utilizes the super elite picking strategy used by the greatest alternate pickers of all time (Paul Gilbert, Andy Wood, Martin Miller, Al Di Meola, and others), the mythical two way pickslanting style mentioned by Troy Grady in his incredible Cracking the Code lesson series! If you haven't subscribed to Troy yet and watched all his videos, DO IT NOW! Life changing stuff here.
    On my channel, i have done several downward pick slanting licks, and several upwards pick slanting licks, but not much that has shown you all the secrets of how to use both. He who masters both pick slants can alternate pick his/her way through ANYTHING! This stuff is worth taking the time to learn, it has answered so many of my own questions and problems i used to have with my own playing! I've made this lesson SUPER LONG and detailed to give you all some great up close camera angles and new insights into this technique. Master it and watch your speed limit and control go through the roof.
    Thanks so much for watching! Tell Uncle Troy i sent you when you go check out his channel.

    Before I discovered Troy a few years back and realised what I was doing (and the theory behind two way pickslanting) it was something that naturally developed for me from learning and problem solving a load of Paul Gilbert licks. This was after years of frustration getting stuck between strings and over exaggerated hops trying to get out of them.
    Two way pickslanting also gives you a real aggressive attack/snap on upstrokes which you can hear a lot in Paul's playing, which really gives you some dynamics at hyperspeed that most players don't have.

  • @phillee3653

    I've been doing 3 notes per string across 2 strings to really iron this out. (ABC DEF ABC DEF etc.) If you gradually change your pick slant, it's a lot less jarring. So during ABC, i'm gradually slanting, and by the time I get to C, i'm already prepared for the string change. Then I gradually start to change my slant after I pick the D on the second string. By the time I've made it to F, i'm ready for the string change back to A. It's dead simple once you have the muscle memory down.

    • @Ghruul
      @Ghruul 4 года назад +1

      can this be further applied for general alternate picking? or do you need to go back to more inefficient techniques when there are string changes (like 5 notes on E string, 1 on B, 1 on E, then 5 on B again and so forth till the low E string)

    Guys, as most of you know this is the real deal. I kept trying to see if it was effective by trying the 3 note per string slanting, but the constant pick slant changes weren't giving me enough of a chance to see if it was working. But the even numbered (6 note per string) exercises Ben gave us allowed me to do an entire ascending run with one slant, and an entire descending run with the opposite slant, and after 20 years of playing guitar, these runs never felt so effortless. It's definitely going to take a LOT of time to get the 3 note per string switches down, but this was a huge eureka moment.

    Uncle Ben, this video is amazing. after watching cracking the code I thought that a downward pick slant meant turning the pick in your fingers like you would turn your car keys and keeping it straight up and down from the guitar body. this clearly shows what pick slanting is and now I need to relearn everything I know...

    Fantastic! I've seen Troy's stuff months ago and it really helped me a lot, had me playing UWPS as well as DWPS lines pretty safely at high speeds, but I've always had problems with using both in one lick. And then uncle Ben shows up, at my birthday even, and gives me something to practice (which I felt Troy was kind of missing out on) exactly that. Thanks man!
    One thing though... I don't get how some players manage to switch between the two slants so quickly, as in three note per string lines or this famous Paul Gilbert lick. That's just beyond me.

    • @namenotfound34
      @namenotfound34 7 лет назад +2

      Switching between three notes was one of the most tedious things I have ever had to learn. I do DWPS down and sweep string changes and just switch at the very last note and pick normally starting at an upstroke. UDU change pick slant DUD, change pick direction UDU and so on It really is the most efficient way to play 3 note per string lines. Now since the string changes are swept playing that clean, as in not hearing the actual string change is extremely obnoxious as well as getting used to starting with an upstroke. Paul just forces a string change with a legato note or when he's determined to pick everything uses exclusively DWPS.

    Hey Ben, awesome video. I took your advice with filming my own picking motions and learned that I had inadvertently been doing a version of downward and upward slanting when sweep picking. It's interesting that the minute I realized this it became harder to actually slant the pick. I think the our psychological resistance to change our sloppy habits is half the battle in our quest to improve our technique. Keep doing what you're doing man!

    Coincidentally, knowing this helps with my beginner problem of anchoring my wrist. When I started guitar my right hand just stuck itself into an upward pickslanting position by overdoing it and fully tilting the wrist into the body of the guitar, anchoring it. Now I've just got to rotate my hand and learn downward pickslanting.
