I am going to get this pencil sharpener. I have prisma colored pencils too. I can't sharpen them either so i never use them.
I've been the same way. I have old Prismacolors that were gifted to me in 2002, which are amazing... But over the years I've replaced colors as they wear out, and the new ones just fall apart when sharpening. This sharpener did the trick!
I just ordered one. Can't wait!
I own this beauty. Suggestions: Empty the canister after every few pencils. I think it makes a difference. Also...if you DO break a lead, clear the broken bit from the mechanism. Duh. Clean things work better. I think the Prismacolor formula tends to gum up the blades of the sharpener and create drag which leads to the breakage. I’m thinking a q-tip with some acetone or carburetor cleaner or some such solvent could clean off the gunk from a waxy oily pencil.
I started to watched your playlist one zentangle a day and im enjoying it...thanks
Glad you enjoy it!
The canister can hold three fresh sharpens before needing to be emptied, but in this test it holded the double. Great sharpener.
After a few months using it, I've found that the canister capacity depends on the type of pencil. The shape of the canister sometimes causes fresh sharpen-waste to get squished between the blade and the inner-wall of the sharpener, making it seem like it's full even though it's mostly empty. This only seems to happen on pencils which for which the shavings come off all in one ribbon-like piece without breaking up, if that makes sense.
This just came in the mail, along with a set of 602’s, matte, and natural. I’m very impressed with all of them. The point I put on the matte was so sharp I was sure it would break while I was using it. I was surprised that the lead did not break.
Yes, the curved blade makes the pencil tip both super sharp and super durable.
I have this sharpener with my wonderful Blackwing 602's. As I knew that the "lead" is softer than your average pencil, I applied very light pressure while sharpening. It came to a nice, clean, long point. It's a wonderful sharpener if you are aware with the frailty of the graphite.
It would probably work on quilting pencils too
KUM also has long point sharpeners that do better job than the Blackwing here, and the KUM only costs 50 cents. The KUM automatic long point that you showed, has 2 extra sharpeners, for mechanical pencils. That means, that KUM, not only sharpens even better but also provides MORE and costs way LESS !!! 99% of the Artists I know, all use KUM sharpeners and maybe an M+R here and there. Never seen them use Blackwings..
PS KUM also makes Aluminum and Brass sharpeners, however, I've never seen a broken, non functional KUM sharpener, no matter what it was made of...
I like the KUM. They both have pros and cons. KUM requires two steps, and it's easy to accidentally break the lead between the two steps. The Blackwing creates a slightly concave curve to the pencil tip, which makes the tip sturdier for point-down work, but less useful for sideways shading. I suggest trying multiple sharpeners and finding the one that gives you what you need personally.
Awesome!
Glad you think so!
I'm thinking a qtip would get the bits out from bottom is this sharpener made in America?....
Donde lo consigo aquí en Monterrey N. L..... Salu2👍
How often Should I change the blades ? And also I m wondering are the blades replacable with Kum 2 point sharpener blades ? Are they same ?
No, the blades are different. The Blackwing blades have a slight curve to them. Change them whenever they get gummed up, which will depend on so many factors like what kind of pencils you're using, how humid your working environment is, etc.
longevity?
My experience is that they do not work. Could you please recommend a good mechanical pencil for writing?
What exactly was the problem you had with it? As for mechanical pencils, I have always really liked the Zebra stainless steel pencils for both writing and sketching. Link below for the 0.5mm version (my preference). If you have a heavy hand or want slightly thicker lines, go for the 0.7mm version of the same pencil.

Try sharpening several BalackWing Pencils.
LOL, I finally opened the Blackwing pencils that they sent me, and tried sharpening them with this sharpener. The sharpener didn't work as well on their own pencils as it does for other pencils. I had to be very careful, or else the tips broke. I haven't really tried the Blackwing pencils in other sharpeners to compare, but I suspect that those pencils are just fragile. If I have time, I'll do a follow-up video about those pencils.
@@MrNewsArtClass yes, Id like to see more on the Blackwing pencils themselves! I just bought one and I'm wondering if I should buy more and the sharpener. Thanks!
@@sarathesquish After a cursory trial... I think the Blackwing pencils are just a softer lead than standard #2 pencils. If you're familiar with pencil sets that have a range from like 4B, 2B, HB, 2H, 4H, etc, your standard #2 pencils are just another name for HB pencils on that hardness scale. The B-side of that scale would be softer lead, and therefore darker marks on the page. The H-side of the scale is harder lead, and makes lighter marks on the page. I would say that the Blackwing pencils appear to be around a 2B or 4B. They're also quite smooth. The upside is that they are very quick to make dark marks without having to press very hard or squeeze your hand. Great for people who do a lot of handwriting, so their hands don't get over-exerted as much. The downside is that they don't erase as completely, no matter how good your eraser is. Again, that's just after a quick trial. If you already have one, I would suggest using it and interchanging between that and your other pencils for a while, and see what feels best for your use-case.
@@MrNewsArtClass I tried that?
@@MrNewsArtClass What you think after more trying ? Shoul I buy it for my Blackwings. If you compare with the other sharpeners espicially Kum 2 Point sharpener, How is it perform ? Thank you for your great review. I want to buy it for my blackwings.
I did and I will.never use anything else.
I hope your pencil sharpener works for you, bought this and does not work worth a darn.
This company has horrible customer service, I do not recommend anyone buy this expensive sharpener. When you try to change the blade, the nut is apt to fall out and if you lose it, you are out of luck on finding a replacement. Many attempts to find out the size from the company have either not gotten a response or get a response of "I don't know what the size is, but follow our guidelines on how to sharpen the pencil". Well, duh, you can't sharpen a pencil if the blade is not attached! I can't find a nut small enough locally.
Please manicure before demonstrating.
