  • The Blackwing One-Step Long Point Pencil Sharpener ( amzn.to/3ryuDA8 ) looks amazing, but it doesn't also work so well. This pencil sharpener was good for a few months but lately has been working quite poorly. In this video I attempt to improve the sharpening quality of this rathe expensive pencil sharpener.

I gave this sharpener TWO tries. Bought it once from Amazon, worked great for a couple pencils, then every sharpen would break off the graphite. I thought it was due to resale on Amazon, so i bought the single step off the BW website. No dice. Got replacement blades. Still eats pencils.

I usually use my two step sharpeners, which I have used KUM replacement blades when needed and they work well. I seldom use this sharpener, so it has not failed yet. I did notice that Blackwing sells a separate unique blade to replace the blade in the one step sharpener. I assumed that this is because the blade has to be slightly concave to work properly. The KUMs do not have that profile. I might add that the Blackwing two step sharpener uses KUM blades from the factory.

It may also be the type of pencil you are sharpening I just got one and within a few hours of trying to sharpen colour pencils to a point it is breaking halfway. The coloured pencils have probably been dropped and I thought I had already made the sharpener worse after a few coloured pencils but then used the blackwing pencils and it sharpened to the automatic stop without breaking. There are some stores that carry replacement blades for this sharpener my local fountain pen store where I got the sharpener Has the replacement blades as well

Excellent review and personal thoughts. I have the same thoughts/situation.

Dang. You’d think that for how expensive that sharpener is that Blackwing would sell replacement blades.

Thank you! I have one as well and it just doesn’t work well. I’ll try your approach. Separately, the NJK 531s long point sharpener works well but without the convex point. I know you have other sharpeners but something different to check out.

I don't think the blades are interchangeable with the one step. Blackwing blades have a slight curve in them which they say adds strength to the point.

Also, have you tried/seen the new BW desktop manual sharpener?

Haven't tried it yet! I kinda assumed it was a rebranded Carl or Dahle (etc) so wasn't too curious, but hopefully some reviews will come soon. It's quite pricey

Although I am thinking of getting a set of Blacking pencils and a Blackwing pencil extender, I wouldn't get the Blackwing sharpener as there are many good hand held sharpeners such as Kum and Dux which have easily obtainable blades.

      Fully agreed with this strategy

I go Blackwing and KUM. I can buy 12 KUM's for the price of their desktop.

Have the same sharpener…. The blades simply dull too quickly…. Fail on Blackwings part to choose such a soft (?) steel…

What’s your sharpener model recommendation for large width pencils? I have pencils too large for the BW opening.

I use a Maped Metal Wedge Pencil Sharpener. Nothing too special but I don't have a ton of extra wide pencils. It's in this video: ruclips.net/video/KuuSkfD28-k/видео.html
