He was out of faze with his surroundings. He has the same disconnect I witnessed when I saw him in New Orleans except more profound. This was far from being his best day, but he's Roky and now he is gone. Thank you Sumner for bringing him back to us for what seemed like so short a time. RIP Rocky. Your music belongs to the Heavens now.

Yeah and sadly he deteriorated even more after this. He grew heavier and more confused. I'm pretty sure he had dementia the last few years of his life.

I saw him in New Orleans once and it was great. He was with some of the guys in one of his earlier bands, The Explosives. He played rhythm guitar while singing and was in his element with his older bandmates - particularly Cam King.

Based on this performance, it looks like he regressed a lot since 2010 where he was smiling and playing his guitar and singing loudly. Something has happened to him in recent years.

There is so much I could say here. I had no idea who Roky Erickson was until, after hearing Ghost cover his song, If you have Ghosts. So I became interested in who this guy was and looked up his info and watched the documentary on him. His life, as I saw in the documentary was a very bittersweet one. For the majority of his life he has been out of touch. Either by his drug use when he was young, or now a paranoid schizophrenic. It was heartbreaking watching him here. In the doc. he said he didn't like being out. I'm sure that causes paranoid delusions, perhaps. I can't say of course. But it looks to me that here, he was very nervous, confused and it looks like he wants to cry. I'm glad I looked up his story. What a sweet soul. I can't say much more without it coming out sounding disrespectful, so I just won't say anymore. Not because I disrespect him, but because his life just fell apart. It makes me sad, in just the 3 hours I've known of him and his life, that he probably has no idea how much he means to people. How many lives he has touched even after he became lost in his own world.

I get what your saying, he looks nervous but seems to relax a bit and it is cringed in places, but you never know what he's getting from it on other levels, he might feel great afterwards or over the course of the gig? Whatever it is, he's getting on a bit now also, so maybe it's that? Maybe it gives him his purpose in life and is good overall for him. When he plays the guitar after a lot of years in that documentary it certainly sounds like he enjoys that! I'm glad to see him performing if I'm honest, I saw him once at green man and it was kind of the same, very amazing to see him up there but thinking,... " is he okay??" And he was okay, a bit confusedish. I suppose in a real world situation, he needs to earn money for Him self to pay for treatment etc, he probably has drugs to pay for and bills like all of us. I LOVE ROKY!!!

It would be great to just let Roky perform with his vocal and his acoustic guitar. Like you can hear him, for instance, on many songs on 'Never Say Goodbye'. I wonder if he's still able to do that. To me, that's the real Roky.

It seemed like people were forcing him back into the spotlight, where he didn't want to be. I think he would have been more happy just playing with a few friends at home or at a backyard cookout. He looked terrified here, surrounded by people expecting too much from him. Should have just let him be.

  • @Danimal77

Wow, he's deteriorated or relapsed big time since 2010 or so. This performance isn't an isolated incident. He had been this way onstage since at least 2012. It's sad considering how confident and SANE he had become during 2005 comeback. He sung loud and proud, smiled, said hello to the crowd, thanked them and ripped through his guitar. For the last 8 years or so he seems very confused and almost frightened of the mic and the crowd. He no longer smiles or thanks the crowd. He even forgets to play guitar most of the time and sings when he remembers to. He's clearly had a serious mental slip since at least 2012. You can see it in his eyes. They seem very distant and as though he's hearing voices or is in another place altogether while on stage. He probably needs to be medicated, but doesn't take it (he stopped his medication in 2007 thanks to his younger brother who doesn't believe that mental illness even exists). He's also gained about 100 pounds since his comeback (he was in really good shape from 2005-2007) and can barely walk on and off the stage today and needs to sit throughout the entire performance. He's not doing well at all (mentally and physically).

Agreed. This is like watching a late-life bloated Brando mumbling and tottering his way thru a re-enactment of 'A Streetcar Named Desire'. A mere shadow.
Look how he reaches for a chord at 2:30 and strums a couple times before giving up. Did he forget how the rest of it goes or just realize his guitar can't even be heard in the mix so why bother?

Way way way too much guitar, the guy with that red Tele completely trashed the entire performance, you gotta let the singer and the bass drums be heard , overplaying on top of everybody just killed it, plus you're playing with Rocky ? I'd be playing clean chords with a tad of dirt during the chorus that's about it.

This needs a palm face smiley in the worst way. I see you have a lot of live music experience and can use cell phone audio as a prime judge of a live mix for a general audience. He's playing pretty much what is on the original song, so how is he over playing exactly? The person filming is in front of the guitarist. Plus as with most low key gigs the vocalist is commonly hosed until a song or two in as the mixer gets his bearings on the Singer. Are you even listening on decent speakers? You can hear the bass and drums just fine. If this was a pro shot gig in a theatre have at it but it's outdoors with minimalist P.A. and maybe not a whole lot of prep. I'm glad you know exactly what you would do if it was you...LOL
