    I can relate a lot to your story with gaming. I go way back with jrpgs and final fantasy in particular. I basically quit gaming in high school in favor of music, and have only just revisited it in recent years. The computer I built for home recording quickly doubled as a gaming computer, and also got my first new console since the ps2 came out. It's been fun to get back into, and I'm excited to finally round out my completion of every mainline Final Fantasy entry in a year or so.

    Your overall ranking is pretty close to mine, so I never heavily disagreed with something (although I haven't played/completed all of the games).
    This was great fun and surely a lot of effort, so thank you again. You made my last two days a lot better! :)

    It seems so weird when I hear you say you were playing FF7 at age 7. The Atari 2600 still hadn't come out when I was 7, and I was in my 20s before I got my first console, a PS1, specifically to play FF8 which I saw a friend's nephew playing and was intrigued by the concept of JRPGs , which were like the Fighting Fantasy books I loved in years past. So thats probably why I rate FF8 so high. They say your first is always your favorite.

    • @gregtroyan

      The first game you play sets the expectation. That said, I'm a big Disney fan and have loved the film's since I was a kid, but my favorite is a movie that came out in my 20s, so that has zero nostalgia attached. 7 just genuinely holds up really well for me, especially thematically.

    Good video!!
    Thank you very much for your rankings videos!! I actually never seen these type of rankings before and it was very creative of you to make all these videos before the release of FF16. Another thing I really liked is how you have for each ranking a reason and explanation why you put a certain game in one position. It was really cool to listen your opinions. I also really love that you have so diverse and fair opinions, like beloved titels like 12 and 14 being one of the last places on some rankings and vice versa games like 13, 2 or 15 beign the most disliked ones higher in others and even though there are some games that you didn't liked than others, you enjoyed overall every mainline ones +Tactics. It's a shame that you couldn't finish it before the release of 16 because of other problems but I enjoyed all of your rankings videos and it's been a while since I enjoyed one. Kinda hope I can see more of it but I guess you want to take a break from FF. ❤

      The videos were maybe about 5 months worth of work to accomplish and while making these videos I pretty much stopped all other hobbies or projects aside from making the videos due to the massive timesink (plus working the two jobs and other duties). For the most part I didn't game during those 5 months, aside from playing the XI story updates, Bear's Restaurant, and a couple story events in Brave Exvius. I actually played more Final Fantasy this week in the form of Brave Exvius than I have in months, so it's more just taking a break from massive video essays. I'm really glad you appreciate the videos and hope you'll drop in to say hi. As a European, I first came across with FF VII, but didnt own it by myself, so I just played some minutes. As FFVIII arrived, I bought it and finished it within 72 hours. Never spend so much time with a video game. After that, I bought FFVII and finished it.
    The next big thing was FFX on PS2, because I had more fun with Legend of Dragoon instead of playing FFIX. After that, I bought FFV and FFVI for portable devices and finished them directly. After some FFless time, I finished FFXIII while waiting of FF15, bought FF15 and finished it in a short amount of time. Then I finished finally FFIX (within 10 years it was maybe the 20 attemp), but liked it a lot. After that, I finished FFIV with the pixel remaster. Now I am into FF16 at 50% and also trying FF12 again on the Switch again. Pretty sure, I buy the pixel remasters of III, II and I after finishing all.
    I guess, I will never buy/play FFXI and FFXIV because MMOs are way to time consuming for someone who can play 2-4 hours a week.

    • @gregtroyan
      @gregtroyan  Год назад +1

      XIV has a free trial with unlimited playtime and the base game, A Realm Reborn, is basically the same length as a standard Final Fantasy game (30-40 hours). Base XI is also about as a long as a standard FF game and can be beat in about that same timeframe, so if you can beat a non-MMO Final Fantasy, you can beat the MMOs. The difference with the MMOs is that the expansion packs are basically sequels, the difference being you can carry over your character stats. So, you can think of FFXI as a Final Fantasy game with like 12 sequels and FFXIV as a game with like 5. I found XI to be very worth my time, for what it's worth, and XIV is free to play the base game.

    • @polarized8708
      @polarized8708 Год назад +1

      @@gregtroyanThank you for replying to my comment. It is free to play? Thats sound great. So I only need the subscription for the addons?
      I played World of Warcraft in the first initial years and I didnt like the concept of wasting my time with these quests. Maybe FF14 did a better job, can I get around the MMO part? Because, its a different story when you start your Switch and be immediatly in your game and playing for 40 minutes to 1,5 hours or starting your computer, connecting to some people and leaving them out of nowhere for your family.

    • @gregtroyan
      @gregtroyan  Год назад

      @@polarized8708 14 and 11 both have "main stories" more than most MMOs. In terms of story, they are closer to other FF games than WoW. 14's base game (A Realm Reborn) and the first sequel expansion (Heavensward) are free and you can just play the main story if you want.

    I can see how much you love FF games, your ranking of the games it was interesting and unexpected, cuz FFII, XIII and XV usually rank bottom. Like you i don't hate any FF game i like to see the game gor what it is.
    My order of playing is FFX, FFXII, FFXIII trilogy (my first one it was FFXIII-2, FFXIII and Lightnings's Return), FFXV, FFVII Remake. I started first FFXV but finished FFVII Remake, cuz i couldn't get into FFXV it was like something was missing and after a few hours it started to get boring, so this game took more than a year for me to finish. After i finished the game i didn't hate it and somehow there was something that makes me want to play it again. As for the other games i bought it after they put the bundle of FFI to FFVI for sale. So my order is FFI, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX and XVI (i finished FFXVI first and FFXI it was the last, the reason for that it was it only missing i think 3 or 4 days for the release of FFXVI when i started playing FFIX). I played thre FFXVI demo and i got really invested so my mind it was in FFXVI, bu after i finished FFXVI i returned to IX to finishi it.
    For the online games i only played a bit of FFXIV but they are not my thing, i like playing solo. Still i liked the time i played a bit of FFXIV. As for the side games i played FF Type-0 but i couldn't really get into the game so i quit, perhaps someday i would give another try, after all when i played my first FF game i hated the game in the beginning, but after giving another try i fell in love with the game and until today is one of my favourites and has a special place in my heart, it was the first game that made me cry like a baby.
    The other one i played it was World of Final Fantasy, it was fun for me to see the characters of the other games in chibi form. The story it was fun but i must say it is dark too. After i saw the secret ending until today i'm waiting for the sequel.

      I mostly play the MMOs solo. In XI I only grouped up for harder content at the end of 4 endgame expansions but otherwise I played it all solo.
      I liked World of Final Fantasy but it annoyed my wife so we never got too far in. I want to finish it at some point, though.
      I'm glad you enjoyed the videos. Thanks for taking the time to comment and share your story with me. Always great to hear the different perspectives. Cheers mate.

    The first game I tried was 1 at my freinds house on the nes. I remember not liking it at the time and I never had a SNES opting for a Genisis was mostly into Shining Force and The Sonic and Streets of rage games. When the playstation came out I didnt get one until late in its life cycle. I did. Want to try some Games so I remember playing Legend of Dragoon first. Loved it then Got through Lunar and Lunar 2 loved those as well so finally decided to give Final Fantasy a chance. I went to soft ware ect picked up anthology booted each one up and the one the kept my interest was 9. So it was the first game I finished so then I finished 7 and then 6 Then 10 came out so I went through that game then I went back and player through 5. Final fantasy chronicles came out and I played through 4 and Chrono trigger then origins came out and finally completed 1 and then 2 of couse 12 came out and funished it. Then 13 came out was not a fan still never finshed did not play the MMOs then Finally Final Fantasy 15 came out and I finished it. To this day I have not ever finished 8 ot chrono Cross. But also For me Final fantasy kind of fell off. I havent really liked any of the games after 10 and have pretty much moved on. As an adult in my 40s I became more of a fan of survival horror and RPGs like Skyrim and the witcher but I will always love the nostalgia of the PS one era.

      I'm not a big horror guy in general but I did like Resident Evil 2 quite a bit back in the day. I'm generally a fan of the entire Final Fantasy franchise, so even the games I rank lower I still overall love. I'm a big FFXI stan at this point. I used to be very anti-MMO but trying XIV and playing through XI made me change my stance pretty heavily. I still am wary about them in terms of game preservation, but I love them for what they are.

      She played a little bit of the original 7 but quit right after Wedge fell off the Sector 7 plate. She wasn't vibing with the dark steampunk thing and quit, though she liked Aerith a lot. She has interest in Remake but we haven't bought a copy. I don't own a PS4 or PS5, and I've yet to buy a copy of Remake on Steam. I really want to play Remake and have watched bits of it on RUclips, but I've been venturing through my FOMO games before going back to my offline backlog. 7 Remake, Type 0, and Lightning Returns are 3 games I really want to play/finish, but I'm putting Brave Exvius, Dimensions 1, Dimensions 2, Another Even and 14 above them in the backlog list.
      Brave Exvius and Another Eden are going strong, but they are freemium games, and the life cycles of those can end instantly, and I want to finish the story. Dimensions 1 and 2 have only ever been ported to mobile, and I don't trust Square to preserve them. And then 14 I have no concerns about disappearing, but I want to finish it up to complete my FOMO gaming arc that began with ARR and included all of XI.
      Currently, we are playing Skies of Arcadia, but we fell off playing that after dealing with all the household chaos the other month. Not sure if we will go back to that or another game at this point.
