Thank you so much for putting this series together. I am a total novice when it comes to body work. You gave me a good idea of the tools needed and the methods used to tackle a task like this. I just finished the body work on a cheap aftermarket bumper. Took me close to 40hrs to get the bumper how I wanted it. I would have been clueless without this mini-series. Big Thanks!
Wow - Congratulations for taking this job on. The aftermarket bumpers do look great but they certainly are rough. Glad you like the series and I'm really happy someone could use the info - didn't think anyone was watching the vids on this bumper. My son loves it and it's held up very well so far. Good luck and ask any ?s you might have :)
I appreciate you checking out the video my friend. Life is good for sure - especially on cold days, next to a wood stove and sipping on a hot coffee :)
You're telling me,I'm doing a Smyth Ute ,and the 'glass is anything but good. Rear window opening is 3/4" off to one side , cab surround looks like it was set down on the left while wet, the fenders don't get me started about the top rail not even close to flat. I'm not a body guy,im a tech, but I've had to learn. This would cost me a fortune at a shop. I've got help for some knowledge on the composites and it is kinda fun in a way. You can't really oops it, cut off too much just put some back on. So much easier than metal😃 I'm getting tired of it, I've been at the body stuff for 4-5mo now (3yr build) and I've got to get the cab and fender joining areas decent, as it'll be really hard once it's together. I can probably get it 70-80% decent ,and hand it off to a buddy who's a body guy so he can laugh at me before he finishes it out for me(I'll help whatever to keep costs down I'm not looking for a deal from him cause ya gotta eat)
Man that thing was a chore! In 1986 a guy brought me a brand new, futuristic Ford Taurus that he had started to put a fiberglass ground effects kit on. It actually was a well made kit, and he had everything mounted. The instructions called for making the rocker effects blend with the original rockers, and the kit even came with a quart can of body to do the job. The reason he brought it to me was because he squeezed the whole tube of hardener into the full can of bondo, and started stirring it up with a paint stick; til the paint stick stopped moving... lol
If you cut your various fabric straps ahead of time, you can wet them out on a flat surface then apply them to the stack with out having to push much air out. Boat yard techniques.
Wow that was a lot of work. Looking great now. Gotta wonder, would it not have been faster to just cut the upper corners off the OEM bumper and fiberglass them into the new one?
Good thinking Woody. Might have been able to cut and lap those pieces onto the custom bumper with rivets and panel adhesive or something. Have a good weekend WB :)
Jerry, I always seem to learn some little trick watching these videos! I can’t remember if I asked “did you think it would be this big of a project” when you ordered the bumper cover? It is sure taking shape!
When my son started talking about replacing his front bumper with a fiberglass custom bumper, I sort of figured I was facing a big job but didn't think it would be quite this extensive. Hopefully it turns out looking really cool. Might as well go the distance now and get it right 😊 Thanks again Uncle Mark for you kind words and support all the time my friend - have a good weekend 🏈
@@LakesideAutobody Yep, do it right and all the headaches will be forgotten but the praise from all when they see the car with this super cool nose piece, it will be the talk of the town! (And hopefully a one of a kind in his circles)
Fiberglass reinforced is water proof and just a bit stronger so if you have a rust hole patch that you are not sure is water tight, it's good to use the green stuff. Basically if you need strength and/or a moisture barrier :)
What made you modify the fender over the edge of the bumper? I would have expected the body line (front of the fender) would have matched up with the hood. Now I would think the bit you added would make the body line a little off? Or am I thinking of it wrong? It looks great either way. Nice work!
You're thinking right. I never thought about it - I had to run out and check it out. Funny thing is... the original body line ran behind the edge of the hood edge just a bit - now it lines up perfect! Lucky 😊 I give you a shot of that in an upcoming video - the next one or the final paint vid. Have a great weekend Jay :)
Jerry, I’m installing a used replacement bumper cover on my VW Rabbit. There are several small dents and dings here an there. Is regular Bondo acceptable to fill this plastic material with? Should I use bonding promoter first prior to fill? Also, there are some cracks in the cover. Is fiber reinforced filler better for these areas? As far as paint goes, should I reprime the cover over the existing paint after scuffing it up?
You'r right on everything. Here's a video on this topic that may help - ruclips.net/video/WBFVAIsXKy8/видео.html BTW - I've never had issues using regular filler on a cover as long as it was roughed up first with a DA sander :)
Is that fiberal your using to fill in panel gaps? Im a some what new body tech nd i mainly do body work on semis. but I recently got a duraflex bumper for my 2015 camaro nd i just got it cut to fit snug on the front but im having a hard time finding a way to fit the 3 bolts through the fender any help please and thanks
To get filler straight you want to cut through not ride over. 40 grit cuts through - 80 grit gets clooged and rides - see vid for more on that - ruclips.net/video/rv0uB-ZvrFo/видео.html Happy TG my friend 😊
i just got one of these kits to put on a f-150. ABSOLUTE GARBAGE !!! that being said, i am the guy in 89 who dominated SEMA for the companies hot tops/ radical and mild to wild! these guys commissioned me to build 30 plus kits for MINI TRUCKS. And i blew their company UP!! IF ANYONE WANTS TO LEARN EXCATLY HOW TO DO THIS 'ART' I WOULD BE HAPPY TO SHOW ANY BUSINESS HOW TO MAKE MONEY[YES IT WILL COST A LITTLE] when i started with the kits they were having a hard time doing 10 to 50 a week. in 3 months , with equip and employees were doing 400 a week. anybody want to bring the industry up a notch let me know.
Hi Jerry. Great video. How long do you wait to start with cheese grater? I take it while its kinda soft and not truly hardened up??? Or if you touch it its a little tacky??? Have you thought about a video series on all the diffrent primers and paint??? Should would be great, I'm sure you would get more subs and views. Take care buddy
I sit right there by it or at least keep checking it as I do something else. Too early and it will gum up the grater - too late and it won't even cut it. I can't give you a time 'cause everyone's situation is diff. I can say it's about as hard as Parmesan cheese or even harder - Have a good weekend my friend :)
Hi Jerry. Question. Do you or have you ever used Bondo Honey??? Have you ever mixed ordinary body filler with glace filler in order not to get as many pin holes in the actual bonds filler ?
Probably a lot - I really don't think you would find too many shops that would even take it on. I would expect to pay 1-2 thousand though or even more to have it done right. I'm doing this one for my son so..... I get some cool videos out of it at least. Have a great weekend GM 😊
Very nice work, loved the video, you're a craftsman.
Thanks for watching - glad you liked it. 👍😊🏈

Good stuff Jerry!! The average person doesn't have a clue how much work and time goes into a job like that, especially to do it correctly!!☻
Thanks RK - good to hear from you. Hope you and your family have a great Thanksgiving :)
Custom work is expensive but worth it. Nice job fitting it. Aftermarket parts don't often play well with others.
Thanks 👍

how do you know when to you regular body filler verses fiberglass reinforcement filler?

What grit did you use to sand the rest of the bumper before priming etc? 180-220?
You can paint over anything from 220-320 on a DA or 320-400 wet sand by hand :)

Gaps are filled will Dura-glass or Bondo-glass - any fiberglass reinforced filler will work :)
How much would it cost me to get this done to a Duraflex bumper on my vehicle ?
The costs would vary greatly from shop to shop. First, is finding one that will do it for you.
How much it cost for your shop do it ?
Nice job. I've spent more tie fixing Duraflex parts than any other
Yea... it was pretty rough for sure :)

why a cheese grater, why not sand?
looks like to get it more smooth to make the sanding easier, am i right?
You're right. Less dust too.
