Bob just continue being yourself. Who cares how many hits you get. It seems like you enjoy doing it. Your doing a lot better then some other folks that I follow. They don't seem to care and just love to share their knowledge. You share very good info working on all the old building in the NYC area. Most people just don't see that kinda stuff. It's nice working in a clean new building. When you work in these old buildings like do you never know what you get. I like that you share the old with the new. Your experience really shows. Bob Love your channel and don't be discouraged . 35..5 K subscribers...not too shabby

Yes, Bob has a lot more subscribers than some channels I subscribe to. I'm here because Bob makes videos that interest me. I don't _need_ to see a "live-type" video to understand what is being shared. If folks are paying for repairs by the hour, and they've hears other Content Creators claiming that making a video doubles the time it would have taken to finish a job, then they surely won't want a video being taken during _their_ job. Bob could simply ask the customer if they would allow him to make a video and either make one with permission or simply keep doing what he's been doing with talking over still photos.

Like, take a look at a plumbing nightmare, and walk us through the thaught process of how you would have designed it, and how you would repair it.

The repairs you make on cast iron, boilers, leaded pipes, etc really pique my interest. Honestly any tutorials you make help me learn more. Keep it up, your videos do not go unwatched and unappreciated.

Bob what you are experiencing is happening all over RUclips. I have friends with cooking channels that have been on here 10 years that can't break 50,000. It's the RUclips influencers that are causing the majority of smaller channels to suffer. If you don't do big grandiose productions YT don't give you a second look. You provide real world instruction with none of the BS. In my opinion you are one of the honest plumbers on YT. Not like some that walk into a customers home camera in hand and make comments like "this ain't no taj mahal". Your content is just fine don't change perfection.

I truly enjoy your videos. They are very detailed with great observations because of your many years of experience. I think many average people are looking more for simple “how to fix this or that”. You may consider short videos that focus on that type of RUclipsr. Here is an example. People often have problems with their toilet tanks that have faulty fill valves or flush valves. They don’t understand the variety that exist. You can explain several brands of fill valves and how they are properly installed. In another video you can focus on the different sizes and types of flappers on flush valves. In another you can examine the “Mansfield”, the canister varieties, the multiple manufactured dual flush canisters. You can even focus on the type of different flush levers based on their position on the tanks. Some manufacturers make “universal” models that supposedly can be used on any configuration. You can make an episode looking at the different tank bolt configurations, the quality of plastic bolts vs. brass bolts vs. stainless steel bolts. You can make one video on simply common mistakes make by people using “bleach tablets, chlorine tablets, the blue liquid” and so on. You can make one video on how to replace the guts of the most common toilet to resolve several typical problems. You can also help the ignorant people understand how to correctly replace a toilet with the right size (distance from the closet bolt to the wall). Although most people have a standard toilet, a few don’t and they need to get the right size or suffer the consequences. There are so many variations on just toilets by them selves. I think that there are many people who want to “fix, replace, repair or just improve “ their toilet but lat your expertise as to how to do it correctly! You could just do a video on the different types of “outdoor faucets”. Each type has it’s own name, purpose, unique function. There is pros and cons for each one. You can examine compression vs. ball valves. All of topics can be explore or demonstrated inside your shop. Again, how you can fix them, should you just replace them, are there better designs…. In every video share your personal experience and preference. Your a seasoned professional who knows and fully understands what works best! I hopes these ideas help. Take care, happy plumbing.

I like your videos. There are a few good other channels out here but I enjoy yours as well. Maybe since you seem to really specialize in steam heating, you could do a couple videos on conversions and things to avoid. I just bought a house built in 1908 with an oil fed boiler and radiator heat. Some of your videos already helped me on this. Unfortunately mine is an older unit that stays on 24/7 and then turns on a recirculation pump when it gets a call for heat. They used to heat the house hot water with it, but that was disconnected. So, I may be interested in going to a more modern system next season.

Love your videos Bob! I'm from NYC and I see a lot of these basements that you work in with all of that old equipment. I think that people do like to see live videos in people's homes and watch repairs from beginning to end. I still appreciate what you do and will always keep watching. One thing I'd like to see (which is nowhere on youtube), is a galvanized, steel, or black pipe repair using a union. How to properly measure out a pipe to inserting a union. I can't find one video on that anywhere. Maybe you can make a video on that one day. Keep up the good work!

Hi Bob, I hope this will cheer you up a bit. Your videos have been very useful to me not only for solving specific problems, but for the insights, tips, and tricks from an experienced professional.
Don't for a second doubt the value of your content. The viewership numbers are significantly affected by youtube's algorithms. You might like to watch a video by Veritasium titled "Clickbait is Unreasonably Effective". It points out that views changed dramatically based on the thumbnail and video title choice for the exact same content. So you might want to do some A/B testing and changing existing video titles to gauge the impact on views. The algorithms certainly have changed over the years, but the value of your content remains invaluable!

Hey Bob, your tutorial style of videos are good, but I also like it when you show the old NYC plumbing you sometimes deal with. Instead of doing the whole first person video experience that some channels offer you could add in some short video clips explaining and showing the problem and the most difficult parts of the repair. Maybe more videos about how you repair old NYC plumbing will attract viewers since you see that often. You can also show similar repairs at different locations to help viewers see the challenges at different locations. Thank you for all your videos!

I think it’s because this type of content does not reach people because they will search about “ fix things inside the house “ only when they need it. My advice is try to look for tips or videos about fixing things frequently in the house and people keep looking for them on the internet or on RUclips especially , I think it will be helpful. Other than that your channel is great dad and you helped me, never give up please.

I haven't received notifications of your videos for months. One popped up today so I have been binge watching those I've missed. Your videos on fixing steam valve on my cast iron helped me out when I desperately needed it. I have moved and no longer have those radiators. My new interest lies with remodeling my bathroom and installing a new toilet flange. The current flange (pvc) is level with the sub floor. I know that it should sit on top of the finished tile. So, I have been watching videos to find out the best way to replace the flange. I can't tell you how many people in the big box stores have told me to just use double wax seals. Smh.... :(
Also, after I put in the new flange and install the new porcelain tile under the new flange, will drilling holes through the new tile cause the tile to crack. I haven't seen anyone actually show the final install of a toilet on new tile floor. Videos always skip from removing old flange to showing toilet already installed.

    • @BobsPlumbingVideos
      @BobsPlumbingVideos  2 года назад

If the subfloor of tile and mud or tile on plywood and backer-board is solid, I use a 1/4" carbide bit and use the flange as a template to drill through the tiles into the subfloor. If it's a mud floor I use 1/4" lead anchors. If plywood and backer-board I drill through the tile only and the drive wood screws into the plywood subfloor. Time for an updated video! Thanks! Bob

Hi Bob, I'm a 64 yo female DIYer. I come to RUclips to learn and be entertained. I think you do a great job on your videos, although sometimes I can't relate since I live in Texas. For example, we don't have many homes with radiator heating, but I do love learning new things so even though I don't need the knowledge now, who knows what the future might bring. You might do some research on what makes a video hit all the algorithms to boost it. Seems 20 minute videos do best. But I do like a quick and dirty video without too much chat that gets to the point. I wish you well. And hey, can you tell me where to find a plug for the dishwasher input for my garbage disposal. I'm getting rid of DW and need to plug that hole. Thanks!! Keep videoing, you make they will come.

I would just use a short piece of rubber discharge hose (3-4") onto the disposal and in the open end of the hose insert a 1/2" or 3/4" copper cap (depending on the size of your hose) and use a hose clamp to secure it in place. Or insert a short piece of 1/2" or 3/4" piece of copper secure it with a ss clamp and use a sharkbite cap to seal the deal. Appreciate the feedback! Bob.

Hey Bob, first off, I hope you don't stop making videos. I'm a reasonably new homeowner and while I do respect the trades and call people when they are needed I also live in a city where it is notoriously difficult to get contractors who do the job right or at all (Pittsburgh). So, suffice it to say, your videos have been a godsend. That being said, some of the viewership might just be that while someone like me (most of your viewers) may view a video or two of yours every now and then for a very specific problem, you may not get continual viewership since not every video is applicable to everyone all the time.
However, I've got some ideas for you that might help.
    1. Would you feel bad about bringing a camera in to a job if it wasn't someone's house yet? Why not make a deal with a habitat for humanity type program to do some pro-bono/at cost plumbing and the tradeoff with them is that you'll do that but you'll get to take video of it for the channel? Seems like a pretty good tradeoff to me and it would be a great way to volunteer in your community.
    2. Most youtube channels that have millions of subscribers have them because they do, well, crazy shit. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate someone who actually teaches great information that sadly isn't available in most of the country (i.e. at any hardware store, school, or even with some plumbers unfortunately). That being said, you know, you could do a few videos where you do something really interesting plumbing wise like a series on the most insane problems you've ever seen/how you fixed them. (Like world ending or laughable plumbing problems, etc.) You could go through the legality of what homeowners are allowed to do depending on their locality/where to find information about that. (For example, can I turn off the water at the sidewalk myself if my main breaks?) You could even do a miniseries on building something neat with plumbing. Not like fixing home plumbing, but like, making a potato canon out of plumbing parts/what you'd need, etc.
    3. Advertise - Not like paying people to advertise, but the thing is, the people with the highest views do one of two things. Either a) They get really lucky and their stuff goes viral (usually is a one off and isn't continually like that) or b) they advertise to their friends, family, coworkers, etc. Word of mouth makes a worth of difference and I would think that if you told your clients "Hey I have this youtube channel if you ever have any questions about the work I did for you" then you'd likely get more views.
    4. Research your audience - What makes someone visit your channel? (You can always ask your viewers) If you can answer that you can get more subscribers. For example, I visited your channel because my home warranty company wasn't helping me fix a major plumbing issue, the city was screwing me over (waiting on them for a while to turn the water off at the curb as the main was leaking inside the house), and the plumbers who came out misdiagnosed where a leak was (even though I told them exactly where it was when they arrived). So, exasperated, I was like, screw this, I have a PhD in bioengineering, I can figure this out myself since no one wants to help me. Then I youtube'd it and came up with your video about globe valves, gate valves, and how to pack a nut to stop a leak thankfully.
    5. Giveaways - Oprah is very successful because she gives stuff away. Why not have a giveaway like "Win a free hour of consultation on plumbing with Bob" and then as part of that you use the material from the consultation for an episode?
On a side note, I apologize if some of these things you already do. I haven't made my way through all your videos yet as I'm a new subscriber to your channel, but I suspect with your help I'll greatly reduce the amount I spend on plumbing issues in the future.
One last thing, sometimes you have to think about the "next big thing" when it comes to getting views. I can tell you personally, one of my skills is being able to 3D print things/design/CAD things into existence. Now, obviously plastic can't be used for everything but I've actually made some minor plumbing fixes with 3D printed parts. I'm sure that would be interesting to some people (especially Millenials and Gen Z who are part of the maker generation).
For reference, the things I've printed plumbing related wise are things like 1)A plastic washer to fit inbetween the rubber and metal nut on a kitchen sink drain (I didn't want to go to the store so I printed it). 2) A plastic fitting that hugged the main valve/where it was leaking so I could divert the water into a bucket nearby. 3) A wrench (yes, and it works)

First of all, your videos don't suck. They are probably not what a lot of people are looking for as far as entertainment goes, but they are valuable tutorials that will probably still be on RUclips for decades to come. You have quite a library.
As you said you are retiring soon, I wouldn't worry about how popular you are on here now. Make videos when you feel like doing them. We, your fans, are always around to watch what you do. Maybe join TerryLove's plumbing blog and ask if you post some videos to help out with the blog. That is a great site with pretty good trafic. The worst thing that can happen is they say no.

I very much enjoy seeing your videos talking about things, but have to admit seeing realtime videos on you applying your massive talent in problem solving and hearing you think through things would drive me to the channel a lot more. I hope you can change your stance on not doing those soon.

I thoroughly enjoy your videos. Seems as though your customers would understand the reason for a camera. The public has become hyper defensive and wary of skilled tradesman such as yourself. Sad. Keep the faith.

Can you upload a Steam boiler install

Unfortunately, I'm no longer doing boiler installs, only service. Couple of reasons, It's a young man's game but mostly because of the bureaucratic N.Y.C. Dept. of Buildings BULLSHIT that is constantly penalizing the licensed contractor and putting the screws to the consumer. OVER REGULATION is running rampant, N.Y.C. is NOT a trade friendly place to do business.

It seems that the customers of plumbers who actually record their work don't have a problem with it. As long as you have their permission, why not.
I do enjoy your videos anyway but seeing actual situations with experienced experts like you solving issues is the way to go.
By the way, your videos DO NOT SUCK!!!
