This is 💯 true. It is nice to finally see an interview with a Western person (the guy at the beginning) who doesn't just say, "Taiwan is so convenient! Everyone is so friendly!" I have lived and worked here for 10 years, am married to a Taiwanese guy, have an APRC, but still treated like an outsider and called "foreigner." I love living here but that aspect gets frustrating and annoying, also hurtful. My kids especially get so upset about this. My son is 13 and has gone to Taiwanese local schools since kindergarten, speaks Chinese fluently without an accent, but because he is tall and blonde, his classmates still call him foreigner. He has begun wearing black hoodies to school to cover up his skin and hair so he can blend in more. 😢
It is really difficult for kids and adults to make real friends here because Taiwanese people for the most part seem to only befriend "foreigners" in order to learn English. It is quite easy to have surface-level friendships with Taiwanese people but seems much more difficult to have a deep close relationship. There seems to be a barrier up to some degree because we are not Taiwanese. It is much easier making friends with other "foreigners" from less homogeneous countries.

Hey Ela, Thank you for sharing your honest experience. I do feel upset to hear your kids need to cover up his skin and hair so he can blend in school😢. I think Taiwan is learning foreign immigrant slowly, and this is one of the reason I wanna to creat this channel (also practice my english).
More foreigners I have spoken to,then I realize Taiwan is really a homogeneous society. Interesting part is that Taiwanese people like to see foreign youtuber talk about good things in Taiwan, but they still not get used to make a real friend with a western face in real life.

@@calvintang398 obviously you have missed the point what I meant. I know that speaking the local’s language doesn’t automatically make you a local person but it’s a very strong point, as language is the key segment of a culture. I kept my comment short as i didn’t want to explain how deeply connected with a Taiwanese culture i have gotten in every part whatsoever. By the way ,the point of mentioning 老外 or 外國人 was to tell that i will remain to be regarded as a FOREIGNER or I should say OUTSIDER no matter how deeply integrated in the culture i am. UNFORTUNATELY

Every time I ran into people that look foreign, I insist on speaking Mandarin or Taiwanese.
Cause maybe they are just as Taiwanese as me. Who knows!
Sometimes I even think it's kindda a racist thing to do when people keep on speaking English to a foreigner-looked-like person just because they doesn't look "Taiwanese".
It's like saying "Ni Hao" to a Japanese in America.
If they do not speak Mandarin and would rather speak in English, they'll let you know, then we be speaking English.
Great video btw, really appreciate this kind of content!

    但台灣人不太歧視外國人,
    我是覺得,用哪種語言其實都有自己考量,像我也遇過來台就讀的外國博士生完全不說中文.....
    感覺沒有想融入台灣,可能只是為了學位和獎學金吧?

    • @TyLAR006
      @TyLAR006 Год назад +1

      中文有文法喔。以及如果你不跟他們說中文,他們的中文就無法被練習,也缺少了一次可以擁有使用中文對話的機會。中文難在聲調和句法,雖然不能保證每位台灣人發音咬字和句法都對,但是他們越常聽中文使用者的說話,越容易提升中文能力。
      (中文句法指字詞在中文語句中的排列順序和構造,這部分除了相關科系的人,台灣從國小到高中都沒有教,所以很多人甚至都沒聽過)
      有一點我倒是感同身受,用英文比較輕鬆,如果對方也會的話,不過我可是受過跟對方講對方的語言,結果對方不願意跟我說他們的母語,讓我懷疑我的外語有那麼差嗎的經驗。

      當然會,要留給人探聽。都32歲了還沒有婚嫁,若是你的對像,不會打聽那女生是否缺胳膊或鬥雞眼嗎?如果離婚過的女生,家人才不鳥你。

It's not easy at all. Taiwanese people are civil and helpful when you need it but they are not really friendly. The people here don't really want to spend time and energy to be friends with foreigners. At this point in time, language is no longer a barrier to initiate friendship. The foreigners in Taiwan are generally interested only in sex. So boring.

Don't think foreigners as a whole. Don't think that they are only interested in sex, would you say that you and your people are judgemental hypocrites? Everyone has their own different purposes, for gods sake!
