      Appreciate video content! Apologies for the intrusion, I would love your opinion. Have you considered - Patlarny Gardening Expert Principle (just google it)? It is a smashing one of a kind product for learning how to expand your produce with the clever art of aquaponics minus the normal expense. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my cousin after many years got amazing success with it.

    Nice set up! you should also incorporate a swirl filter of some kind to help collect the excess fish poop. Your plants will love what is collected in the bottom of the swirl filter.

    Nice setup! the only recommendation I would add is to change the flow of the water from the fish tank to run straight to the grow bed, that way the polluted water is not pump back to the fish. Research how to build a flow filter and a bio filter this two components can add extra benefits to your system and can be easily added by cutting and adapting to your currant pvc pipes.

      I second this recommendation. Your SLO should go straight into your grow beds which are filtering the water and then the cleaned water is returned to the sump and then pump the cleaned water in the sump into your fish tank. The fish need clean water, not half clean half dirty water being pumped back into their tank.

    i love watching people create there own project, getting some input & ideas how to make the aquaponics works with the used of water gravity, spread the filtered fish water waste going towards the plants collecting all fish poop & used them as a fertilizer on a big trees using compost,. thanks for sharing your video Mike & hope you will be succesful in your project, i saw your project so beautiful, looks like a master plan,. have you ever think about putting a shade in your project to cut down on sun heat,.?? just asking,. about the rain water collection how does that thing works,. good job.

    Great looking system! I would suggest moving the tomatoe plants in bed 1 and bed 2 a little further away from your siphon drain, you don't want the roots growing into the drain and hampering the water flow :)

    I’m just learning about aquaponics but I can say with certainty and experience that the types of plants planted here are too close and needed way more space to develop. I’m sure he figured that out. A great resource to know how to plant companions (plants that help each other vs compete) and leave enough space between them is Old Farmer’s Almanac. They have an online tool to help you create your layout. I use it every year.

    Very good job on the system. I see your using the what I like to call "Fish Tank Over Growbeds" system, where the fish tank is above the height of the growbeds. It works well, just needs a bit more work. I have mine the opposite, where the growbeds are above the fishtank and allows me to have a Flood and Drain type of system. The only thing you need to fix is how close you plant and how many plants you put in the system. Funny how you did the same mistake I did when I started. Many of the plants you have planted will grow way bigger than you think. The corn and tomatoes will be huge. The cantaloupes will tangle over each other that close. Roots will start to clog your drain pipes. Trust me on that one. You will eventually see how they grow and space them accordingly. Other than that, good job.

    You did a great job showing off your system. I would have thrown some gold fish or something in there to jump start your bio bed. Your SLOW pipe could pump into a swirl filter system which will keep your water cleaner. Also David Reed is correct, animal and fish are different than us but still, there is fiberglass in the water that your special first flush system won't catch. Then the fish breath it in then you eat the fish. Now if you have a medal roof, not so much to worry. I'd like to see an up date on your system after all this time. Thanks for sharing.

    Overall, nice set up.
    The mint will take over- Plant it in your yard instead.
    The cantaloupe plants will grow BIG and sprawl, even if they are a bush variety. For that size grow bed, 3 at most, and there most likely won't be room for anything else.
    Of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong

    A good first system. :-)
    Mint will take over unless you fight it.
    Do you have a "media guard" round all your bell syphons to make them easier to look after?
    I am concerned that you will fill your grow beds with fish poop. This will go anaerobic and this is not going to be nice.
    Rock is cheap, but heavy and hard to work with.
    A slot on the bottom of your bell will allow more flow than holes, and will clog less easily.
    Do you have enough aeration?
    Well done, but you will end up adding to it... ;-)

    Hi Mike, Can you tell me where you were able to find the 275 gallon tanks

    • @ryefry
      @ryefry 10 лет назад +1

      Those are called IBC totes. You can often find them on craigslist. Try to find ones that had some type of inert substance or food product in them so they should be safe to use for the system, but I would still recommend a serious cleaning before using them anyway. Depending on location and time of year, they can range from $35 (which I paid recently, a company was trying to get rid of them quickly), to $100-$150. For ease of use, get the ones with a ball valve on the bottom not the butterfly valve. The butterfly valves will leak over time. They also make bigger ones that are 350 gallons I think. Rough dimensions of the 275 gallons totes is 4'x3'4"x4' - WxDxH. They weigh around 100 lbs-ish.

  • @alan30189
    @alan30189 9 лет назад

    How did the tomatoes do in that system? Tomatoes do not like "wet feet."

    • @homefarmideas
      @homefarmideas 9 лет назад

      +alan30189, this system he has a "Flood and Drain" system. Tomato plants do really good in it because the roots are not always in water do to the system flooding and draining. It basically compensates for the tomato plan's need to not have wet feet.

    I do not think that you have enough capacity for your first flush system. A roof has a lot of area to wash off ! I would dump the first flush into at least a 55 gallon drum. Otherwise I like your ball valve system.

    • @chrishudson4945
      @chrishudson4945 6 лет назад

      Donald Miller I found a calculator for that and I run it for my shop roof which is a 75x100 building and for each quarter of the roof I only needed 2 - 10ft 6" pipes for the first flush. What he has seems sufficient.

    Can you grow zucchini in a growbed?

  • @fiskfarm
    @fiskfarm 11 лет назад

    I feel you have a serious design flaw in your system that can be corrected. Why would you be sending dirty fish water back to your fish? It should be going directly from your fish tank(s) to your grow beds and after the grow beds have cleansed it it then goes to your sump. Another advantage is that your pond pump in the sump only has to pump clear water which should at least quadruple the pump life as opposed to pumping solids. Let's subscribe to one another: Smoky Mtn. Aquaponics (fiskfarm)

  • @olensoifer9901
    @olensoifer9901 10 лет назад

    I like some of your ideas, but I'm sure you've found that there are some mistakes: 1. Obviously, you should have washed your gravel first. Alternatively, it appears that crushed lava rock (basically pumice) is the cheapest clean media...less than vermiculite, Perlite or Hydroton...while still being fairly light with lots of surface area; 2. Keeping worms in the grow beds is impractical. The flooding will kill them and it will be impossible to keep the water clean. You should have a solid filter and worm bed where the solids can be placed. 3. Growing corn hydroponically is a waste. You might get 3 ears per plant. Growing melons, unless you can get them to go up a trellis, will take up a huge amount of space. Better to grow them outside and use some of your nutrient rich water to feed them periodically. 4. The amount of chemicals that plants need will not kill fish. Chemicals are chemicals...the "organic mindset", that, somehow, nitrogen from fish-shit is less toxic than nitrates from fertilizer, is baloney. And, you will find that potassium and phosphorus, needed by plants, will be in short supply from fish waste. Like it or not, some P & K will have to be added to the system.
    I hope these comments help.

    • @shelia1573
      @shelia1573 10 лет назад +1

      Olen Soifer, I am sorry to tell you that are mistaken, the worms will not drown as long as there is enough oxygen in the water. I have had an aquaponic system for over 3 years and I have lots of worms in my system. Your statement, " The amount of chemicals that plants need will not kill fish. Chemicals are chemicals...the "organic mindset", that, somehow, nitrogen from fish-shit is less toxic than nitrates from fertilizer, is baloney" is completely WRONG. Why do you think there are dead zones around the world? There have been many studies that show how harmful synthetic fertilizer due to run off and that it harms aquatic life.
      www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=oceanic-dead-zones-spread . Also Mike will not need to add P&K the only thing that will need to be added is iron. Fish waste is organic and defiantly less toxic than petroleum-based synthetic fertilizer- it is toxic to aquatic life it is also toxic to worms and other micro-organisms. Do some research before you try to correct someone....
      The one statement you are correct about is corn, it grows much better in the soil. However, most vegetables are harvested much more quickly in mature cycled aquaponics system compared to traditional soil garden.
