In a way it was. The smoker was supposed to be used for moments with the family together. Memories that were meant to be cherished forever, especially for Jack. Then it became the exact symbol of Kate and Toby's breaking point the minute they used it. Sure it wasn't directly linked to the smoker but it definitely plays a big role in it for Jack. This was his first memory of many more that were supposed to come. It makes sense that Jack links the smoker to what happened that day
Omg right?? I was so scared it was going to be a huge burn or something like that!! It’s interesting though that future day Jack says he doesn’t like to be reminded of the day his parents marriage blew up… Apparently they never told him that their marriage was already blowing up before that happened. I really like the Toby Kate storyline because it is so very typical. Most people who get divorced don’t cheat or hate each other, they are just people who typically married young or married for the wrong reasons or at a certain time in their life and then when they grow into who they’re supposed to be they recognize that they have nothing in common. Something tells me that Kate and Toby are going to be able to coparent just fine and won’t hold tons of bitterness towards each other

I agree. It really aggravated me when Toby and Kate were arguing and Kevin jumped in. It seems like everytime they argue he buts in and I feel that it is disrespectful to Toby. Their issues in their marriage are for them to work through not Kevin. I feel he needs to worry about his own life instead of everyone else. It's like he needs to have a part in everything. And I feel like that is another reason Kate and Toby are doomed. She won't put Kevin in his place when it comes to their marriage. And Toby was right, every time he is around Kate complains and nit picks everything Toby does. The accident is both their faults. Toby didn't lock the gate and she taught Jack how to unlock and open the front door. But somehow she only sees what he has done. Also she is jealous of him. Set aside Jack falling and got injured, the fact that he went to the park by himself is a testament to Kate that she really has prepared him to be independent.
I rather disliked Kate this episode. She verbally degrades Toby which leads to him not closing the gate all the way, which leads to Jack getting out because Kate was the one who left the door unlocked and taught her son how to open doors. Yes there was irresponsibility on Toby's part but how irresponsible is leaving a child gate open compared to leaving a front door unlocked to the outside world? And she goes to argue and degrade him even more and when he finally caps back she hides behind her brothers
When Rebecca knew he was at the park and started running, I couldn't handle it. Her memory may be fading, but the real, raw, and intense love she has for her family is still there. Toby can be upset all he wants that Kate gave Jack the skills to be independent, but that Park Song honestly saved his life.

Kate is so upset with Toby because her 70 year old mom is moving a mattress, but let’s her run to the park alone to get Jack. How come Kate and Toby weren’t there. As a mom and grandma I would have ran to that park so fast.
I think it is mostly Kate’s fault, not just for teaching him to open the front door but for having him leave his cane when he arrives at the park. The cane is his eyes, it’s his tool for independence. While normally yes Kate/Toby is there to watch him at the park and make sure he doesn’t hurt himself, this time he was alone and left his tool behind. He cannot be independent without it, with the cane he would have know the ground wasn’t even and maybe not have tripped and got hurt. Teaching him independence is great and the right thing to do, but in a way where he can take care of himself fully for when Kate/Toby aren’t watching him.
I understand both sides of Kate and Toby. But Kate was totally in the wrong. On top of that, jack may be blind but is not totally hopeless. As Toby keeps saying. He was able to change his shoes from tennis shoes to red boots and leave the house to park. It’s time for Toby and Kate to leave each other. Toby deserve better and Kate needs to get over herself. It might sucks for children but it’s better for everyone.
Sorry not sorry but this is Kate's fault. Yes her intent in teaching baby Jack such things are to help in the long run. However at his young age, it could've killed him.
