- For some, Charles Austin Miles's hymn which starts "I come to the garden alone, while the dew is still on the roses" is overly sentimental and smushy. But others have found such joy and peace singing this song. How about you? Let's look at its history, and the meaning of its lyrics, here today.

1. I come to the garden alone
While the dew is still on the roses
And the voice I hear, falling on my ear
The Son of God discloses
Refrain:
And He walks with me, and He talks with me
And He tells me I am His own
And the joy we share as we tarry there
None other has ever known
2. He speaks and the sound of His voice
Is so sweet the birds hush their singing
And the melody that He gave to me
Within my heart is ringing
3. I'd stay in the garden with Him
Though the night all around me be falling
But He bids me go, through the voice of woe
His voice to me is calling
SO beautiful!!! Love the history and how you tell the hymns story. I have been so drawn to this hymn lately… Jesus is beckoning me to come to the garden with Him to get refreshed as I share His love to the world and those in His house! Bonita Springs, FL
Thanks much 🙏🏻❤️🔥✝️
This song & Amazing Grace were what mom wanted sung at her funeral. When the singer sang it, is the only time I teared up.
You see, the last 15-20yrs I was very concerned about her Salvation. She absolutely refused to discuss anything with me & often said, “I don’t want to hear it!” She went on home hospice, I sat with her for 2 weeks. She was home bound the month of August.
Once she became uncommunicative (her last two weeks) I prayed for her out loud & played Gospel music from my phone, country Gospel was the only music that settled her.
Our daughter was here with me her last week to keep watch.
The day she passed, I left for two hours to run some needed errands. When I returned our daughter told me she’d cried out “Oh God! Oh God!” When she passed, (I was holding her hand) A very light blanket of peace settled over/in her house. A day later our young son told his job coach & his boss that “Jesus took grandma home.” I hadn’t used that phrase with him because I wasn’t quite sure. BUT GOD gave three clear signs she had Salvation when she passed. 🙌🏼🙌🏼
That's a beautiful picture of God's love. Thank you for sharing.
I enjoy the best of contemporary worship songs but I give thanks for the wonderful heritage we have of timeless hymns and gospel songs. I come to the garden is surely one of the best. Thank you for your explanation of how it came to be written.
I absolutely love this song. It brings tears to my eyes every time. ❤
TY Mr Powel, for sharing ur love of God with me/us. I was blessed to tears of joy and happiness... namaste
This is one of my favorite Easter\Resurrection songs! I’ve been listening to it all week! Thank you sooo much for sharing its history!!
i love this video of the history and meaning of this beautiful hymn written and set to music by Charles Austin Miles! Thank you Luke Powell for taking the time to do this.
The hymn is called "In the Garden". When I used to minister in a nursing home, one of the ladies always requested this hymn. It is so very sweet and lovely!
I love this hymn! I always feel I'm with Jesus in the garden. I'm a Gardner & whenever, I'm in the garden working, I always feel Jesus is with me, especially in the evening.
I love this song.. Thank you for sharing.. I use to sing this song in my concerts.. Wonderful to hear the Lord using his talent..God bless you 🙏
My father requested this hymn. He was a devoted United Methodist. Choir was his favorite thing. Perhaps above family sometimes. Thank you for this video.
I first heard this song way back in 1966. (I was in Grade 2). We had a talent show at school and this redhead boy (Grade 7) stood on stage and sang this song. The lyrics have stayed with me all these years. I am now 63
May the Lord bless you andd your family
I was just out walking my dog and singing this hymn to myself. I love it dearly and as soon as I came home I found your podcast while looking for someone singing it. This song has been sung in my family my whole life. (75 yrs and counting) it’s been sung at each funeral, and many family gatherings. I can hear my mom, siblings, and cousins harmonizing. The story of the hymn’s origin touched me deeply. His experience is glorious. I never knew that the song is based on John 22. Now it’s even more special. Thank you.
I'm a lady off 72 and I know this song for year's I always love the song. Thank you for shared this with us. Be blessed Pastor. 🙏
My father’s favorite song I love it so much brings so many memories with my father.❤️
My father-in-law was a WWII vet who fought in the Battle of the Bulge as a paratrooper. He was a rough man even in later years and never spoke of his years in the military. I remember clearly how he teared up one Sunday morning when we sang this song in church one morning. He told me that he had known the song during his years as a soldier. I had never heard it before but I always remembered it after that because of the reaction he had when he heard it many years after he had first been introduced to it.
At the age of 83 I've known this song for years Every time i hear this song it brings me so close to my Jesus and remember my late special friend in the Lord who taught me this song. The Lord is so good as I now have the privilege to hear it again through you. Praise the Lord for your ministry.
I have been singing this song as a young girl. I am 63 now and I found it to be one of the most beautiful songs ever written. I am always inspired listening to this song as the words really warm my Spirit and brings me to a place of quietness and peace.😊
This hymn is very intimate for me. I meet with Jesus every morning during my "quiet time" to seek His face and His presence. One day in the future when I have gone to Gloryland to meet Him face-to-face, this song will be playing at my memorial service, as my family and friends remember me and the impact that Jesus had on my life. Thank you for sharing the background of this hymn!
I miss singing this song with my late Mom
Yes I find peace in the garden thank you
The song is perfect. It reflects the writer’s personal feelings toward Jesus. “He walks with me and he talks with me.” That’s a close personal relationship, as it should be.
This was my dad’s favorite hymn. He’s been gone almost 35 years. He wouldn’t believe what’s going on in our country that he fought for and was wounded, got malaria and received 2 Purple Hearts for and his only brother died for. It’s so sad. I miss him and his wisdom❤️
I’ve always loved this song!! I miss hearing it at church these days.
Everyday I sit in my garden at dawn. It is just Jesus and me. He draws my attention to His creation. I am peaceful and eager to serve Him another day.
A favorite of mine and I have sung it many times over the years.
Thank you pastor, for sharing. God Bless🙏
Beautiful It touches the heart. Thank you for the explanation I loved it.I heard this in 2001 when I attended the "IAM"Conclave o Mount Shasta.
I found this song later in life as an adult, it is very sweet 💕
Yes HE came to in that song..I heard it when I was alone and never left me.
I love this song the Lord laid this on my heart ❤️ this makes me concentrate on Jesus it makes me think of our Savior I always loved this song even as a very young women I am 60 years old now.👑🌼🦋
This was one of my Gran’s favorite songs! In her late 80’s she battled dementia. One day we were sitting outside in her beautiful garden overlooking her pond and watching the ducks and I started videoing her as I sang this song - she picked it right up and began to hum and then full on sang it!!! Such a precious memory! 💕 Love your ministry my brother! God bless! 🎉
My father listed this hymn in his "Red Binder of Doom". We didn't do a public funeral. Dad saw how hard that was with our mother. We will reunite Dad's remains with hers in May. I will try to play my flute there, solo. And we will hire the Carillon. And "How Great Thou Art".
Mom hated that one.
My Dad was a 1:13 solo hymn singer. He had a besutiful voice. When he was in the congregation singing people would turn to listen. On long trips he would sing for us. Happiest of memories. My. Very fav.
My Dad was a farmer and gardener. When he passed away, this was one of the songs we played at his funeral.
I cry almost every time I take time to pray and I hear or sing this song. Thanks for the story..! God bless you!
For me Luke, this is a hymn which brings about that peace which passes all understanding & is such a comfort in our hectic lives.
Oh brother..... this song has been so instrumental ( no pun intended) I'm recent "Rebirth" in Jesus Christ and accepting Him as my personal savior for second time in my life. My testimony is proof of God and a medical miracle happened to me.....
A couple days after getting home from the hospital I was talking with a friend about God. It was then I realized that it was God in the hospital room with me that stopped my internal bleeding. At that moment the song came on and I dropped to my knees and receptive Christ back into my heart tears of joy tears of joy. My story is a long one but a beautiful amazing one and this song had a big part in my recovery and return to God
My family lived on base in Fairbanks AK in the mid to late 70’s. We attended the Protestant service on Sundays and we sang this song there. When God had us move to CA I was devastated as a nine year old. As we settled into our new home, we went to church. When we sang this hymn one Sunday I was overjoyed. I knew our new home would be okay and Jesus was with me.
One of my most favorite hymns. The emotions that I feel while listening to it are always so intense… but you have brought a new depth to this song that I didn’t think was possible and most certainly made this day very special to me! Thank you for this…
Yes, Luke, it draws me nearer - and oh how I need that! Thank you for sharing the history and music of these beautiful hymns. Watching from Kingston, Ohio.
Yes this beautiful hymn does draw me nearing to Jesus. I love you ministry.
I love this song. I can remember my grandmother singing it while she is busy doing all sorts of chores around the house.
My favorite gospel song ever so beautiful. It brings me closer to Jesus and ever and I just feel his presence and I sing this song to make it very personal and it’s beautiful melodies beautiful and you do a good job by the way my brother keep up the good work he’s old hymns they’re classics and they’ll never go out of style. They’ll never fade away. Most people are Namikaze listen to this new contemporary Christian music I Collett Christian crack music because you can’t really worship God to most of it and it’s just I don’t know it’s just the theatrics, but this song is very beautiful the best ever.
Absolutely wonderful.........for all of us who have experienced the personal relationship with Jesus.....we understand!
❤ my mothers favorite hymn, we sang that hymn in her funeral and just 2 weeks ago in my friend's funeral again. Beautiful hymn
Thank you so much
Blessings
A very comforting and encouraging beautiful song. Thanks for the history behind the song 🎉
I am 76 and really enjoyed this song growing up b/c my grandmother loved it.
Thank you so much Luke for this tender and sweet encouragement. There is NO better place than in the garden with Him and there's NO other voice that can touch and understand the depth of my being like His. Mary's encounter has been very daar to my heart since the 1st time I read about it many years ago but I have never known that it originated from there... . I should have known.. 😊 It's SO soecial.
I love this hymn. It's gorgeous. This composer Brant Adams uses In the Garden and What a Friend We Have in Jesus for his instrumental solos of worship music. Now I see the connection between these hymns. Both talk about having a personal relationship with Christ Jesus.
I think this is a lovely hymn showing us the important of spending time with God Thank you so much
Amen to this beautiful, powerful hymn.
One of my Lent season favorite song 🎵.
Thank you, Pastor Powell.
May you be blessed abundantly,
🙏 🙌 ❤
I love it it was my mom’s favorite
Thank you for the history of this song it was one of my Mother's favourites. Knowing the history makes me more emotional than ever.
Be blessed
I loved this song from the first time I heard it at 18 years old. It made God so real & personal to me! It still does -& I’m 63 now. Praise God!
Yes so very true. I feel as if the Lord and I are walking together in love so beautifully.❤
Lovely hymn. Praise God. Thank God for the lovely voice and meaningful words.
I sing this all the time ,it touches my heart❤
This was my mom’s favorite hymn. It was one sung at her funeral at her request.
Every time I hear it, my dear mom comes to mind.
Thank you Luke for sharing this beautiful story and song 🙏 God bless you today and always
I'm leading a Zoom study this summer on hymns, their back stories and related Bible verses. Alas, I only just discovered your channel at the end of the summer, but we have two weeks left and I will recommend your channel to the participants. I will to see if you have videos for the other hymns we studied and include those in future. God bless you
What a special privilege Mary was given! I can just feel the damp, fresh air of that morning! "Mary!" And the birds hushed.....oh my! Thank you again Luke!
This song has always been a favorite of folks who are trapped in convalescent homes, perhaps not even able to walk or talk in the garden any more. One of my pastors used to criticize it for being too thin theologically. I think he's repented since then. Age and perspective and gradually realizing the centrality of God's companionship help us mature and become more childlike again.
Oh yes. One of my favorites that makes me feel close to our Savior.
This hymn one of favorites
My mother enjoyed me walking her to the garden early morning
Birds bees Butterflies and flowers
Nobe other shall cherish
As we did
So I understand the verses
God's love never leaves us
Joy Calm peace
Thank you
Great stuff brother thank you so much! You are a blessing!
This hymn was one of my mothers favourite & it was played at her funeral & not many people there knew of it, but it reflected beautifully of both my mothers love of a garden & of her faith & now the hymn is mine too.
Thank you Luke, for bringing the story behind the hymn to us
God bless you for this.
Amen
Thank you so much Luke. Its a truly beautiful song and does bring peace and comfort
Thank you for sharing this hymn. This holds personal memories for me of my Dad who loved God. He died in 1986 but he gave me the heritage to treasure a relationship with the Lord.
This was his very favorite hymn.
Loving Christ with all of your heart results in a spiritual heart-to-heart love relationship with Him. I love hymns and sing them throughout my waking hours. This is one of my favorite songs because I imagine myself meeting Jesus in a beautiful garden, worshipping Him, and hearing His comforting words. Yes, I love Jesus.
Yes Miss Sonya! When things get crazy i close my eyes and sing this as i picture walking with our Jesus and all is well... then usually my mind goes to "It is well with my soul...." and am able to go back to my job at the hospital and let Jesus love people through me....🙏❤🕇
Hello! This was my g. g. gramma's favorite hymn.
She experienced an abundance of tragedies in her life, and I imagine this song was a deep comfort to her.
Thank you! My mother's favorite hymn.
My mother sang this song many times. We were children. I loved this song. My mother always had a beautiful garden. I am thankful she taught us to garden and to sing for the glory of God. Thank you for sharing this. 🙏🙏🙏
Loved singing this hymn and imagining that it was me in that garden. Heard it sung by actress Dale Evans Rogers who was an inspiration to me a fan.
@carolyndaly9368 loved her. 😍 Glad you were blessed to hear this beautiful hymn.
This was my grandmother's favorite song! I think of her every time I hear it. I searched specifically to see if you had made a video for this hymn, and I'm so glad that you did! Thank you!
I love this song, very emotional but it brings me face to face with Jesus at crucial times in my life
Sang this song many times in a small group ensemble, in a duet, and as a solo in my church. My mom loved and cherished it un she went to be with the Lord.
I am so glad I found your site Luke! Jesus led me to it. These old hymns I love! They still live because they were birthed out of eternity!
Your voice both in speaking and singing is so calming, adds such a sweetness to each song. God Bless you continually to share!

I love it so much. Brings a feeling of peace.
I love this song, one of my favorite! It speaks of the intimate oneness of a relationship with Christ, our beloved!
This is one of my favourites. I love singing praises to God, Adoni.❤
I love this song. As it is so very beautiful, my memory is that it was my daddy’s favorite. He has been gone many years now, but he portrayed the Father’s love in heaven. I love him so deeply.
This hymn was one of Dads favorite to sing at at times seems appropriate and at times out of place but always always a reminder of Jesus presence- He went home this past week to walk with Jesus a task that had been missing from his earthly life thses past 20 years. Such joy the thought that my Dad can now tarry for the eternity to come with Him in the garden.
Thankful for this song in my Dad’s life.
This was my grandpa’s favorite hymn. He heard someone play it on the saxophone once, and he thought it was one of the most beautiful things he had heard. I started playing the saxophone in 6th grade, and he always wanted me to play this hymn. I know I never played like the man he first heard, but every time I did, it would bring tears to his eyes, and I knew he wasn’t really hearing me, but the man who he originally heard play it. It was always something special we had, and I think of him every time I hear it.
I absolutely love this song. ❤
I love this hymn. 🥰 It is soothing and keeps my focus on Jesus and my relationship with Him.
I love the first moments alone with God each day. This song depicts the first time I surrendered my life, mind, body, soul, and my spirit to Jesus my Savior and Lord. This song brings me back to my closest moments each morning, when he prepares me for each new day. His mercies are new every moring.
This is another one of my favourite hymns. I love playing and singing to this song.
And I also like the history behind it and thanks 🙏 be to the Lord Jesus-Christ our Savoir!🙏🙏🙏🙏
And he walks with me, and he talks with me and tels me I am his own, and the joy we share... Austin experience this , myself too... That what most others have never known... So some at church don't want this hymn as they've not had this blessings but us who have these... We love this hymn... It is parallel to our walk in God
Thank you for the story behind this beautiful hymn. The hymn I loved but hearing your story this suddenly gave expression to my overwhelming fealing of peace and love when I visited & sat in the Garden Tomb in Jerusalem . Before this I could never explaine properly to others this fealing before, but now I can, by using this hymn and the story behind it. So thank you and may God give you his Blessings. Shalom.
This beautiful hymn is a special memory of my wife, her favorite..she died 3 yrs ago and is in that pardise ( garden) now experiencing in heavenly reality with JESUS.
I can't wait to see you and your wife there!!!! Thank-you Jesus!!! Praying for God's perfect peace for you brother as ONLY He can give. John 14:27.🙏❤🕇
A very special hymn for me - my late Dad’s favorite .. invariably tears flow when I hear it .. thank you for the history behind the hymn .. it makes all sense why it was my Dads favorite..
We sing this song often in our church,we have one Precious Saint, that sings this song louder and with such passion, the first time I heard her sing"sitting behind her and her husband" I thought it was an angel.... it was....every time I hear this song I think of them, both Praising God.... what a precious memory, thank you for doing what you do....
Oui,and I sing 🎶 it in French and it is very edifying!
Très édifiant et les paroles et les mots sont bien choisis 🙏🙏🙏🙏
So many memories of my mother singing this song. As far back as I can remember she sang this song even before she was saved. I am sure it held a special place in her heart after she was saved. Thank you for sharing the story of how this song came to be, it’s a beautiful story.
I love this hym, it reminds me of my mom
I love this song We sing it at church I love your program I am in Australia 🎉
Beautiful voice. Thank you for sharing the story behind the hymn. Now knowing it it based on John 20, I love it even more.
This is one of my favorites
This also makes me think of Adam and Eve in the garden before the fall, when the Lord walked with them during the evening breeze. How wonderful that was.
