Valerie Turner. I love her style. Simple, articulate, driving, wonderful. I try to play acoustic blues which means I find a lot of players to watch. Valerie is my new favorite. I rented a steel resonator guitar for a few days and found it really tough to play!
Mike from Canada again… still waiting as to when you can send your book.. :). …. LOve this song. best blues Ive seen since I saw Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee…. simple, direct and honest.. wow.. Hope your all staying safe and healthy.. one day when this covid is all over.. If I make it .. Ill sign up and show up at one of your workshops. be safe you two.
As an old guitar player, I recognize that Valerie is special. She plays advanced stuff with such a light, graceful touch, while singing beautifully. They go out to peaceful country locales, away from the noisy rat race, and it's ear-insulting music, and we all travel back in time for a few moments. A living art experience.
Very nicely done. That said, the guitar & harmonica are out of balance. Guitar softer than harp. You could bring the guitar's presence up in the mix and control the volume if you used finger picks. Best regards.
Hi, we are Curbside Jimmy & Washboard Jean. You two are our role models. We are down in Texas. I am guessing you are two college professors with double life as musicians.
"Sterno Canned Heat", fuel made from denatured and jellied alcohol, designed to be burned directly from its can. "Canned Heat Blues", a 1928 song by Tommy Johnson on the drinking of alcohol from Sterno Canned Heat
The Sterno and similar brands of alcohol used for cooking food weren’t always “denatured” it was at least for a time made with plain ethyl alcohol and was essentially moonshine and safe to drink. It was eventually made with methyl alcohol added to discourage people from drinking it, and if you did might make you blind or kill you.
So pure, So beautiful ! Tommy Johnson’s spirit is haunting this number
Saw them at Folk College in PA last weekend. Blew me away. Give a careful listen to this to appreciate all the amazing nuances.

Sa-WEET Blues!! Thank you, Valerie and Ben.
Now this is understated beauty. Gotta pipe it out the porch window to keep cool while I weed the garden. So darned good.
Real class, authentic as they come, understated and wonderful. Robin Witting, England

I would have loved to have heard her do this alone without the harmonica. Beautiful singing and playing.
What is "canned heat " in reference to ??

Yikes!...the hangover from canned heat must have been hell.
Wish'd I had her fingers, instead of the stubby nubs I have.
oh same
Too funny. Finger jealousy. I get it, but keep on strumming. :-)
The harmonica has killed this song by Tommy Robinson …. Dead
