  • Ginny Buckley reviews two 1997 model hot-hatches - the Volkswagen Polo and the Citroen Saxo VTS, comparing their performance and handling, as well as taking a look at their unique features. The Polo has a 1.4L 16 valve engine which produces 100bhp, giving it a top speed of 117mph and a 0-60 score of a not so impressive 10.5 seconds. The Citroen Saxo VTS, however, comes with a slightly more powerful 1.6L engine also with 16 valves, and produces more power of 120bhp, which gives it a top speed of 125mph and a 0-60 score of a more impressive 7.2 seconds.

Sorry but the Polo had nothing on the Saxo in the day. I like them both but if I wanted fun I'd pick a Saxo any day. Even an 8v VTR will beat the crap out of one.

Does she have OCD with flashing the full beams all the time? It also seems nothing's changed with VW coz when it comes to standard equipment they're still miserable!

    I Had both, so:
Saxo:great performance and breaking , superb handling, cheap parts, engine that can gain lot of power with some mods. Cheap interior quality, reliability problems, minor second hand value.
Polo :strong build, great handling, good image for its age ,great safety feeling, high second hand value. Poor engine performance (related to Saxo vts), some rust issues, lack of rear brake disks.
I recommend Saxo for petrolheads until the age of 20-28. Otherwise Polo is my choise..

vagtav310 wouldn’t really gain a lot of power but it might sound louder. Only way to really gain any power out of that psa engine would be to turbo charge it. But very expensive to do. Or change the cam timing also expensive and risky. If you mean induction kit you would probably loose power if anything even with a ecu remap.

Not many new cars can pull the 60 sprint in 7.2 with just 120bhp. Even the smaller vw up gti with 113hp needs over 2s more

The Saxo did 60 in 2nd do no 3rd gear change slowing things down

MK1 VTS looks good, but on them VTR alloys it puts me off. I guess the MK1 VTS were on them alloys anyway? However, I notify the VTS being the MK2 VTS on the 15" alloys/different style alloys. I picked up a VTR last month for my new project. Love it!

They should have compared the Saxo vts with the Polo GTI not the 1.4 16v

    • @markturner-smith5309

Probably not possible as the 125ps 6n2 GTI didn't arrive till late 1999 (namely 2000 year model, Europe had the 6n1 GTi 120ps by late 1998 - 1999 year model we did not) so the "16v" 1.4 16v 100bhp was the best/most powerful one they had at point of filming. Shame missed a chance as by time the 6n2 GTI 125ps arrived hot hatches had moved nearer to 130-140bhp. I have a 2001 6n2 GTI (not the first) they are brilliant fun underrated things.

The polo and Saxo are no real comparison. The saxo accelerates faster, has a higher top speed, and corners faster than a Porsche 911 4s of the same era. It's an absolutely awesome car, for it's age.

There are more old polo's on the road today than saxos, says something about which is more reliable really, my one is 21 years old and still going.

Saxo had more appeal to boy-racers so were more likely to be thrased and/or crashed

Fiesta 1.6 Zetec S. was better than both of these. That was actually worse than the car it replaced too.. The XR2i with 20 BHP more and sounded decent too.

VW not necessarily more reliable just built with better steel and rustproofing so longer lasting than a Saxo.
No idea why she keeps giving it full beam.....
Pitting the VTS against this Polo is like bringing a feather duster to a fight with a gun. Who thought this was remotely fair? Even the VTR would rip the Polo a new one as its lighter.
You couldnt have really called this 1.4 16v Polo a hot hatch.

+Livesinthe Shadowsofthenight I have had Citroens for my entire life, BX, Xantia, Synergie, Xsara Picasso. and guess what? they have all been fantastic, done hundreds of thousands of basically trouble free miles. if you think Citroens are rubbish then you are small minded, because anyone with decent knowledge of car history will know that Citroen is one of the most innovative car companies ever. sorry if you don't understand my educated English, I like to make my point xoxoxoxox
