    Our Story:
We are Carissa, Iwan & Frankie the sausage dog, and in 2020 decided one night over a bottle of wine that moving from North Wales to Portugal would be a good idea. Within a month we were on the road to Portugal to find the perfect piece of land to call home. We picked up Albi, Joao and Simao the cats along the way, as well as Diogo the podengo and a flock of chickens.
Subscribe to follow our project as we turn an old stone barn into our home, and learn the ropes of looking after a piece of land to make an abundant garden and one day, our very own winery.

Iwan and Carissa, your videos are delightful. Balanced between music (love the fact that you always muffle noisy machinery), timelapses (the moon one was beautiful), your interventions, the cats (😻), Diogo and Frankie,...
I can watch your videos more than once and find new details and the same sense of peace. Congratulations!

Iwan, keeping in top of the strimming will reduce your seed load making it easier in the long term. So i'm for strim now and then again before seed set to provide peace of mind later. I've been practicing that on my land (in parts) and it seems to be working, so i'll be extending the practice further over the next couple of years.

I love how close you live iwth nature and your lovely relationship with all your animal companions. 💚 The birdsong is amazing too! 💚 re your garden - it is really coming along beautifully! I am just getting into food gardening myself. Sharing a tiny allotment of 6'x7' in Vancouver, BC Canada. because it is so small, we are looking at square foot gardening. you definitely have enough space that. you don't need this, but apparently it reduces watering/weeding requirements. ;-)

Oooh, i just thought, adding the strimmed grass to the chook pen would help build some composted material quickly for the garden AND they'd eat the seeds, AND the seeds that sprouted would give them fresh greens 💚 💚 💚 #winning

@@FrankieOffGrid thank you, I'm so very pleased to hear you're not at risk of fires where you are. My property here in East Gippsland, Victoria, Australia borders natural dense forest of eucalypts and wattles (acacia) and every summer we are at high risk of fires here so must keep the grass and paddocks short. Last time about 3 years ago we were evacuated 3 times due to the fires so I'm very pleased you are not in an area like ours. Much love to you both and all your fur babies xxx

Bundle together sticks for starting the fire with string or cut socks that Diogo has made unusable lengthways a few times and tie around sticks ready for when you start your fire. Careful with the shade sail even well secured, in strong wind can become detached at a corner and be lethal when flapping about to human and pets/

An idea for your well-cap area...... A round pergola over a bird- bath (I havn't noticed any bird-baths on your homestead and they are great for attracting birds, especially in Summer) with plants in pots arranged around it. How about a grape vine over the pergola?.... Just an idea. Your videos are wonderful. Thank you!

Lovely weather, lovely views - and lovely birdsong!! Thank you for pointing out the nightingale - I think I heard one near the bottom of my son's garden one summer, but didn't know what it was. They appear here between April and August, so I'm going to listen out for it again, and compare what I heard. Beautiful sounds - all I get around my way is a load of crows caw-caw-cawing at each other, and it's just not as melodious!!! 🤣

P.S. here's a thought for the hedgehogs, why not build some form of protection over their burrows, so Diogo doesn't dig them up, a pile of rocks they can escape into as well, or a good size tree stump?

Get 2 goats, and you won't have to strim 😊

No chance! 😂 I’d prefer to strim! Maybe a couple of sheep one day.

Wow! You two are hard workers and there is always something to do. Have you thought of buying 1-2 goats and them tethering in the grassy areas you need to keep down? i.e. Instead of having to fence off areas from them? It would significantly cut down on your trimming; you'd only have to do around the trees that you wouldn't want the goats to go near. You'd obviously have to build some sort of shelter for them for the evenings, and to retreat to in the hottest weather. But it would not be a huge imposition of time/money.
