Hey guys! Enjoyed the list! I had no idea Copper dragon was so expensive. Gold Span dragon seems like a more effective card to me. And I'm surprised I don't see more Eldrazi Monument more often. But I've got a couple of Nitpicks of my own: 19:18 The reason Exquisite Blood is $30 is because it goes infinite with the cards you showed to replace it. 23:01 The reason Gishath is $29 is because he's the PREMIER dinosaur commander AND hasn't been reprinted into OBLIVION (unlike all the other elder dinosaur cards). And Zacama isn't a good replacement because she doesn't synergize with dinosaur tribal that well (her abilities don't buff dinosaurs or get them onto the battlefield faster). I would personally recommend Atla Palani, Nest Tender (in my opinion, her mana cost makes her even more effective than Gishath).
Painter's Servant works really well with Teysa, Orzhov Scion since it allows for infinite combos. It's better than darkest hour since you don't lose access to her removal ability. There's also a combos with mill as well.
Painter’s Servant is a dream card to put into my Blind Seer brew that is all about changing colors, protections, etc. I would love a reprint, there’s also the combo with llawan which I think is hilarious. In a weak deck like Seer a combo like that is much needed due to the low power!
Painter's Servant is so expensive in part because it's a Legacy deck (which isn't very good) and as you say, it has no replacement. So if you're looking to mess with colors (the Invasion dragon cycle for example), there's no replacement. Shifting Skies does some of the same thing but doesn't change lands so it's not nearly as good.
Yeah. Used to run it with Douse myself back in the day. As you can imagine, I did not win games that I did that in because it immediately made me public enemy number 1.
"isn't very good" painter's servant decks have been a pretty solid part of the meta for a while? They're hovering at 5% of the meta right now, and they continue to put up decent results.
@@TripsAhoyright? Sounds more like frustration about the cost of a critical card. Overpriced means it's not good enough for that price, and DS is plenty good.
Wow I had no idea that Ashcoat was that expensive, I’ve been trying to make a deck for it since I opened one, I can’t figure out the ratio of rat colony to other things, I need more utility rats, a cantripping rat I can sacrifice over and over and stuff.
If its a thrumming stone deck: 30-35 rat colonies/endless rats depending on how lucky you feel. If in doupt you van even go up to 40 altho id advise against it.
I prefer milling myself because it makes me happy to see all the cards I chose to put in my deck then reanimate a massive threat and claim it's okay because "if I keep milling at this rate, I'm going to deck out anyways and you won't have to worry about it."
Exquisite Blood is a card that gets me killed every time I play it. The only way to play it now is to combo it and win immediately (which I personally don't like to do). Casual players are allergic to lifegain so they can't stand having that card stay on the table.
Hello, new subscriber and Reaper King player here, besides the Legacy combo and color manipulation commanders out there, there are a collection of Scarecrows (which Painter is) from Shadowmoor that have abilities that get certain abilities like persist, flying, shroud, etc. if you have specific colors on the battlefield. And if you don't have Reaper King out (as he basically immediately dies as he comes out nowadays) having Painters Servant turn all of your Scarecrows into specific colors can solve a small problem if you're using the Shadowmoor common/uncommon Scarecrows staying in Typal or Theme.
Ayy fellow reaper king player My scarecrow tribal deck really wants painters servant for the mana cost, the aforementioned scarecrow color effect subtheme, and for the extra win cons
EDHREC says Painter’s Servant’s top commander is Llawan, Cephalid Empress. oh, that’s a combo that says “bounce all your opponents’ creatures, they can’t cast spells,” very cool. Wild to drop $50 to pull that off once and then nobody will play against your Llawan deck anymore. The thing about Exquisite Blood, even outside of the combo everyone knows you have, is that its effect alone makes you the arch enemy in a 4 player game. Opponent swings 4 at everyone? If nobody blocks, you come out 4 life ahead. Symmetrical life drain effects are great for you, God forbid if your black deck somehow runs a few of its own. They have to remove the Blood or focus fire you, or you win. I play it in my Liesa deck where people are mad at me already. I also run Protection Racket in that deck, I kinda love when someone’s face lights up because they get the privilege of spending 5 life to make me not draw Exquisite Blood.
Painter's Servant would slot into my Eight-and-a-Half Tails pretty cleanly, but I've been waiting for the price to become sensible before I try. In the meantime, I'm still paying 1 for each thing I need to target and turn white.
The cavern hoard dragon is also a great alternative to the ancient copper dragon. Sylvan Tutor is only expensive because it lacks reprints. I get an altered painter's servants a few years ago for very cheap, I might just selling for the price of the normal one since I'm not using it. you use painter is decks like Oona, to mill someone's entire library, you cast it name any colour and you name the same colour with Oona and mill their entire library, lands too. Ashcoat is expensive because Rat commanders are very popular, karumonix the Rat king, marrow-gnawer and others.
Pretty sure you play the Sword of Truth and Justice for the same reason most people play the worse swords like Body and Mind: +2/+2 and pro colors with some more upside. I play it in my Oketra deck because doublestrike kinda breaks swords, and TaJ actually makes her commander damage lethal extremely quickly.
Serra’s Emissary is in my Kangee Sky Warden deck and I remember that I cloned it so I had both protection from creatures and Instants the other players couldn’t do anything to me cause I had at less 2 counters in my hand that was a good day
Literally did painters servant so dirty. Its pretty much expensive because of grindstone combo in legacy. Its really a one of a kind when it comes to its effects so there isn’t an alternative that works in the same way with grindstone.
Another good alternative for Avacyn, if you're running a lot of (or all) flying creatures is Sephara, Sky's Blade. It also makes a great commander and can get around paying commander tax by tapping other flying creatures.
Eldrazi monument is my favorite pump card for go wide token strats. It has everything I want: evasion, protection for your tokens, and the +1/+1 doubles the power on board in my Cadira deck.
Gishath is so cool, hopefully he is reprinted or the new Ixalan tribal precons are gonna drive him up even more... the new Ghalta Stampede Tyrant is already crazy.
I'd have to say a decent alternative for Painter's Servant is Eight-and-a-Half Tails. They don't change spells into any color, but they can make it white and give protection from white.
I just built a deck using Ashcoat of the Shadow Swarm as a commander. I picked it up for merely $20 for a near mint and I'm pretty satisfied with that. I do also har Marrow-Gnawer in the deck, which was also roughly $20. For my deck, it's a fitting commander.
I've been running Nashi, Moon's Legacy cuz you get access to green and blue so you can run some really good recursion cards like Bloodbond March and Muldrotha in the 99
Only thing I can see Painter’s Servant being useful for is Aragorn triggers And I think the main appeal for Black Market connections is that extra treasure every turn. But it being ramp and draw in one is also awesome
Full on agree for Ancient Copper Dragon. Not at all broken. No haste. Have to wait a full turn cycle and it gets removed by then. I more regularly get my treasures from There and Back Again. Plus it’s Mountain ramp. Or in my case Triome ramp
@@famousstranger8468 oh absolutely. I add Cavern-Hoard Dragon to my Miirym deck as well. And of course I have Dragon Tempest and Rhythm of the Wild to give my Ancient Copper Dragon haste but it doesn’t always work out.

Serra's Emissary offers only a fraction of the protection that Avacyn does, the protection is way more limited. Monument's card sacrifice is a downside that Avacyn dosen't have and both Serra's & Monument just affect creatures Avacyn is ALL permanents. Sword adds a +2/+2 every time you deal damage no life loss, staff is just proliferate for 3 life each time. More you use staff the more that life cost adds up. I know ppl dont care too much about life cost in Commander but it does add up in longer games and against certain commanders.
Building a D20 tribal deck with artifact sacrifice for draining opponents. Wyll, Blade of Frontiers and Agent of the Iron Throne, and I unfortunately need an Ancient Copper Dragon 😢 didn’t know about there and back again though, gonna pick that up, too!
Painter's Servant + Cover of Darkness = No more Black creatures to block. Thank you! I do wish both were cheaper. Cover of Darkness seems great in Yuriko and Painter's Servant would make some cool and wacky decks more viable. I have wanted to build an Eight-and-a-Half Tails or Blind Seer deck and Painter's Servant being so expensive has turned me off of building them.

Painter is a build around in Legacy as a combo piece and is a relatively popular deck due to it being more affordable than most Legacy decks
the grindstone combo is also extemely slick, fits any deck, both pieces are artifacts with low CMC so they get tutored by basically anything

Amazing in Kaalia with Jokulhaups ravages of war etc too
