Hey Tom, I used the same technique on a Bex Gears Strat. Turned out pretty well for my first try. I used Krylon Super Gloss Clear, and it dried overnight.
Probably too much of mixing of products caused it to stay tacky. I always use the Minwax nitrocellulose lacquer, it does dry fast for wet sanding but let it cure for a few weeks before you get too wild with it.
Your LPJ style kit is looking really sexy after it got some killer paint job! haha Good job, Tom! Would love to see a demo once it's done. Nice stain brother! Love the build. If you need anything feel free hit us up we'd be happy to help 😉
Thank you. Unfortunately, I used a rustoleum clear lacquer on top and it never dried right, even after a month. I just repainted it yellow, and it was fixed overnight.
@@DougGarrett most guitars I get are used and I just paint them, but if I ever get another unfinished one, I'll definitely stain it this way, and just use duplicolor clear.

I had no clue what I was doing either. First time, and I just practiced on a small piece of scrap. If you are going to try it, make sure you test it out first. Also, my main reason to try this stain was the price and availability.
@@TomPetersonRefuseReuse Thats hilarious because I thought if this stain doesnt work out how I like Ill just pain it TV Yellow haha Im going for an Emerald Green PRS/LP Classic burst
Beautiful job and nice color choices. I recently did a mahogany guitar and bought grain filler for it. At the last minute decided against it - I want to feel the wood.
I ended up painting this yellow. I was happy with the dye, but the Rustoleum clear lacquer I used never dried. It stayed tacky. I'll show the yellow paint in a future video.
I really hope you do a burned and sanded neck with the orange lightly applied.... it would look cool. But mostly, i really hope you let us see you finishing it. And PLAYING it for us.
The back is all red with the neck sanded a bit. I assembled it as it came, and will just do as few adjustments as possible. I think I recorded it as a time-lapse.
@@TomPetersonRefuseReuse If it were me playing,.... you wouldn't stick around for long... I'm not that great... Im just a songwriter that plays just enough to fake my way. But in the hands of an actual guitarist, I'm certain that yours would sound good with a slightly hot and dirty p90.... something about it is begging for zz top tones. Does the grain filler just make the wood as smooth as glass or whats it's purpose? I think your guitar turned out really good. I like the red, orange and yellow mix you got
Thank you, yes, it fills in the grain to make the finish smooth. If you're attempting this, I'd recommend an actual grain filler, I just made my own because I like to experiment.
First and for most awesome job, Great work love the color scheme. However the down fall was Grain Filler. How is That? Dyes, Stains and Linseed Oil need to penetrate the wood grain blocking the grain kept it all at the surface the Tacky? that was a combination of the sealer and linseed oil that well never penetrated and allowed to dry, Still for a first run it all looked awesome. (Taurus/Hipoint Enthusiast) When Mine arrives I will be doing a similar process minus the grain fill. I will get it posted before and after. I am wood burning and Dyeing with clothing die. Green Whatchamacallit is the best I can describe it as.
Thanks, I wouldn't have used a grain filler, except that seems the norm. Some use a clear grain filler, after the clear coat. I won't be doing that again.
I could be wrong, I think I got the idea to do it this way from a PRS factory video. Some use a clear grain filler, I used a homemade one with some black stain in it to accentuate the grain.

You've outdone yourself yet again. Using the most basic products, you took that body to a whole new level.

This is amazing how well this worked! I gotta try this at somepoint ❤️

I learned something, I never knew about grain filler and didn’t think about using regular dye on wood. Thanks
Grain filler is new to me too, it really helps if you want to smooth out a board, but still have grain showing.
I just finished my first dyed guitar body, using Angelus leather dyes, which went ok, but I want to try the RIT dyes. Nice work.
