I just finished week 3 of training for my first ever half marathon! During my 5 mile run today (longest run ever to date, lol), I started feeling pain at my upper thigh, where the thigh bone fits into the hip socket. I don't know much about running or anatomy so I was not sure what was going on (I am a total beginner) - but I stumbled across this video when I got home and it was JUST what I needed!! Thank you so much! Just liked and subscribed ✨
(Do you have any insight into what this pain could be from? i.e. is it most likely from lack of warming up the hips, improper form, wrong shoes, something else? Any insight would be appreciated!)
Hi Sophie, amazing work on the 5 miler, well done!! Don't down play it, thats a fantastic run. Good luck with the half marathon journey, I'm sure you will get the running bug after it. Keep me updated with your progress.
Regarding your niggle, it could be hip flexor area from overuse. Your muscles are simply not used to the repetitive use and get overworked. It's hard to say without actually seeing your body in-person. Be sure to progress your running distances slowly so that you let your body adapt over time as it is really easy to feel ok on the run but then overdo it and when we stop its then that we realise weve done too much. If it persists I would get it checked out. Hope this helps and thanks for commenting.

Omg that outward rotation exercise felt so strange a first, clearly a range of motion my body isn't used to. My right hip was basically screaming TIGHT through the first iterations, but felt so much better afterwards. Thanks for all the great work, Ash!

Ive started doing couch to 5k. Everything has been a breeze until week 4 when I've suddenly been getting runners hip. Ive been neglecting stretching this whole time! This helped a lot with my pain and stiffness this morning.

Thanks Ash! You recommended this video from a comment I had on another one of yours. I've done this twice now, and even by this second time, I feel it much more. I especially like the breathing part, you certainly give it enough time for the breathing instructions to be able to take effect. A lot of people say 'Don't forget to breathe' and then almost immediately move on to the next exercise. I definitely have a lot of work to do on both hips, but doing this after each run... it'll be interesting to see how it improves.

Hi thankyou so much for this stretch routine , I just struggled with glute and hip pain on my last training run before my half next week,and this really freed things up ! Should I do this stretch routine regularly this week as prep before race day or just after ?
Yes absolutely. I literally sent this to a client last week and said the same thing, to do it maybe 3 times a week as a day stretch doesn’t have to be post run. Regular mobility/flexibility work will pay off like this 👍🏻😊

Just stretched the hamstrings in a seated forward fold at the end. Enjoy hip flossing and working on strength in the single leg opening move in stag position. Control in movement and breathing, so good.

I was extremely stiff in the hips after my marathon run and this really helped to loosen things up a bit. I looked at some other videos but I found that the movements in this one was just what I needed. Easy to do and loosened things up nicely. Thanks!

very nice video to strech the body and cool down after a run. I have some overweight and often hip pain but try to run more regularly bc i enjoy it. so proper streching for the hips war really good! Followed your channel

Can you do more like these.. I have tight hips/glutes and had snapping hip and runners knee.. physio sorted it out but it still gets tight when I get to the 5k mark and prevents me going much further now
