I've had these same MRE ration packs when I was at Canadian Air Force Trenton Base. I'm with the Army cadets of Canada and I've come across these videos and they bring back memories. We were never allowed to bring back rations to the barracks however alot of cadets hid them in their suitcases.
We also had solider fuels included in the kit. Everyone would want to collect those soldier fuels. The second most collected was powders. If you combined all of the powders we called it Jesus juice.
+gschultz9 no imp's. They would cut the bags and take out the cadets warming package, meal and side meal, then they would boil it. We are these breakfast, lunch and dinner. They would hand us the empty bags, tell us to take our covers out and carry our food to the table. We had powders, the coffee and snacks were all included in the bag.
gschultz - Once again you are the gold standard for professional, interesting AND organized Ration reviews! Fantastic and Fresh - just like your 2016 start!
I'm very glad to hear that. That was my original intention when starting out doing these videos--to give someone who might be curious about MREs, but never had a chance to try one out, a chance to see what they're all about. Thank you.
My MRE's just arrived yesterday. I am so looking forward to your reviews on all of them. Very nice review on this one. I also agree that the tropical punch is an odd flavor for a breakfast meal... but like you said... having a variety is always nice. Also having the option to open a different one up and swap out the drink with this one and or just save it for later too... that is what makes MRE's nice. You don't have to eat everything that comes in the package with that meal. You can save it for on the trail later or mix them up the way you like them!
You know what they need to put more of in MREs? Beef jerky. When I was in the Navy, I only HAD to eat an MRE one time and I noticed that right away. The First Strike Rations seem to be a step in the right direction with things you dont need to heat up, but I guess sometimes you want a hot meal. More jerky, and more "sandwich" type products that dont taste bad.
+Jimmy Russels Now that you mention it, it does kind of surprise me that we don't see more jerky or jerky-type snacks in MREs. They seem like the perfect thing for a little hand-held snack that gives a little extra protein. They have put jerky snacks in, but it doesn't seem to be a regular thing. I almost wonder if they felt like people would feel it was too much of a "typical" thing to put into a long-term storage food and intentionally tried to avoid using too much of it.
+gschultz9 Probably good they don't. The nitrites in processed meats, particularly in heavily cured meats like jerky, are suspected to be the culprit behind why these types of meats have been found to be Group 1 carcinogens.
The Favorite Gentleman I believe its the cost factor they have to deal with. Jerky itself is fairly expensive for a decent sized bag and you only get so much of it. The rations i did have that did contain jerky was caffeine infused.
You need it for something to burn off and so that they have something to enjoy after a while or sometimes people collect the snack part and sell them or save them for later.
I remember how excited you were to try fresh civilian MREs when you got that case from XMRE last year, and this year is starting out with MKS. I am still hoping you will open a ration from each that has the same entree to do a comparison. I bet the guys already in the field are liking the switchup on some menu items. Thanks for the review as always!!
+marshallhippie Thank you marshallhippie! That's a good idea about doing a direct comparison between XMRE and MKS. I don't have any XMREs at the moment, but I might consider doing that. And it's true, when I first got some commercial MREs direct from the companies I was pretty excited--as I never seemed to be able to get genuine MREs that were anywhere near as fresh.
Brown cake. Brown bread with brown peanut butter. Pastry with brown sugar. Hash browns. Brown chocolate drink. Brown coffee. That's a LOT of brown for breakfast! Thank goodness for that fd&c red beverage drink to break the monotony!
the flame-less heaters use iron filings as a component in the endothermic reaction that produces the heat and Iron tarnishes with contact with air and moisture and when tarnished they will not react as easily.
The hash browns certainly look more appetizing than past versions did. Thumbs up for that. The word that sprung to mind for the wheat snack bread was "underdone" when you described it. I also noticed that all the products were by SOPAKCO. It will be interesting to see if the other MKS meals are likewise because of all the military suppliers, I think SOPAKCO does the best job with MREs and TOTMs. Great job again, G-Man.
I just have checked with my Meal kit Supply box, Canadian ones are still the not up to date as yours. ours are still using the meal kit supply FRH and menu No.9 is Pork sausage patty, Hash browns with bacon. i guess Canadian Meal Kit Supply is still catching up!
Really gonna have to try this one! I always enjoy putting the snack bread in the heater with the entree to give it that "fresh" warm bread type of taste. I would probably hold back with an entree like this though, I'd want it to get all the heat it can lol.
I need to buy me one or two of these to try out. I heard the calorie count is unbelievable on these packets of goodness. My grandfather was a marine in Vietnam, now I know why he likes black instant coffee
Ameriqual is the one that packages them in that extra clear layer of packaging. Sopacko is the largest of the companies though, as far as military rations go. I was actually told by someone who works at the company several times that the reason my orders from them take so long is that they are working 24/7 on large volumes of military meals. Most of the Canadian IMP Entrees are actually made by Wornick for the Canadian government.
+ShowToddSomeLove It would seem that there are a number of different styles of "hash browns" out there. This is a variant that doesn't seem to be exactly what most people are thinking of when they hear the term "hash browns". While I really like these, I can imagine that if you had these camping and were cooking eggs over a fire it would be awesome to throw these in the pan and crisp them up!
Call me crazy, but I've been getting the feeling that the MREs produced for civilian consumption seem to be of high quality. I can't quite put my finger on why. This pack doesn't really seem like a military ration.
this doesn't say higher quality to me. I'd be very interested to find out what is up with that beverage base powder. maybe it's just me growing up in the south where hash browns are fried and have sliced onions instead of minced ones. this is another one that could have used some hot sauce just for some kick and not to cover the taste. nice that there are three drinks here, Natick could take notice of this for its breakfast menus.
The bread definitely looked a little pale. Nonetheless, the ration as a whole seems really good, and hash looks even tastier than the older version. Thanks for the video!!!
Nice video. Looked at the website and unfortunately, they do not ship to Australia. Such a shame, as I liked the new look of them,. I will be going to an Army Navy supply store here in Perth to see if they have anything like the MRE's. It would be interesting to taste.
+Paul Lunn That's a shame that they do not ship to Australia Paul. You might want to check out XMRE (xmremeals.com) as I believe they do ship internationally (wouldn't swear to it or anything). It might be VERY expensive to do so, but at least there's the option.
Yes they do but unfortunately for a case of 6 they are $68.99 and the shipping is $85.89, giving a total of $154.88 USD. With the conversion rate of around $0.70 a dollar, that is around 250+. Shame really, but that is okay. I will keep watching your great reviews.
What is your opinion on the best MRE supplier: XMRE Mealkitsupply FirstStrike Just wondering. I've looked over all those websites and most offerings are not that attractive. I had K and C rations in VietNam. I notice that the modern rations don't have toilet paper, which was much appreciated I the 70's.
First off, I should mention that genuine military MREs DO still include the little toilet paper packs--just like the old days! The commercial ones just give you a napkin. I haven't heard of First Strike as a supplier of commercial MREs. First Strike Rations, which DO look a lot like a commercial product, are actually genuine government-issue items. Between XMRE and Meal Kit Supply I have a tough time recommending one. They're both good products at a similar price point (kind of high), but they do have subtle differences between them. Meal Kit Supply is the only commercial MRE that actually gives you a side dish along with a main entree (like you'd find in a real MRE). Sometimes they use the term "side dish" is a little broadly. It can mean a genuine side dish like Fried Rice or Beans, or it could be a Toaster Pastry. XMRE is the only company I know of that gives you a Hot Beverage Bag. Seems like a small thing, but depending on how you're planning on using your MREs it can be a very important component! Another nice touch that XMRE has it that they actually have some of their own branded snacks in them. They're the kinds of things you'd find in genuine MREs, but have been packaged specifically for XMRE. And XMRE also offers a wide range of product lines to meet many different needs. It can be a bit confusing, but it's nice that they can offer so many variations on calories and content. Meal Kit Supply really only has their three-course standard MRE and a lighter two-course one.
I like your reviews, we see the standard MRE reviews on lots of the other channels, it would be cool if you mixed it up a little and eat them not quite like they were intended, like make a peanut butter and cocoa paste sandwich, maybe use the fruit drink and a little water to make "jelly", or add coffee powder to a vanilla dairyshake, like eating the same mre's everyday and you have to come up with interesting ways to eat them. I think it would benefit your reviews immensely.
+Indian Tech Support That's a good idea. I never really did much experimenting with MREs when I was in the service, but I know a lot of people do. I've considered doing a series on MRE hacks lie you mentioned, but I don't really feel qualified since I never did it myself. Maybe I'll ask for some "recipes" from people on "Ranger Pudding" and other hack treats on the Facebook page and then film some of them!
I was in the army so I want you to try this, take your instant cocoa, your instant coffee, and the peanut butter add a little bit of water mixing together like a pudding and it's called Ranger pudding it is so good try it!
We Canadians get the different heater the same as the genuine us mre so... yay So I notice there are 3 kinds the green one the sopako and the genuine heaters and I noticed that sometimes they give you 2 heaters so right now I have 3 extra heaters at my cupboard
+Gameplay All Day If you're saying I should just use what's in the MRE and not add any water or anything, check out my "Just How 'Ready-to-Eat' is an MRE?" in my "MRE Basics" series. That's pretty much what I did in that one.
I do wonder, though, how well does "seared" food survive in a retort pouch? 'Cause I would wonder what'd happen if the potatoes were browned crisp and then retorted...
What is the cocoa powder drink? Is it like Nestle's Quick with milk powder? Have you tried putting some of that coffee creamer in it for creamer chocolate milk?
I'm new to these MRE vids and seen a few different youtubers do them. It seems like the Canadian ones are so much better than most of the others out there. Would that be fair to say?
+roof pizza I've only had one Canadian IMP, but I thought it was excellent. Part of that might be a bit of fatigue with the U.S. ones I've had so many of, but it's certainly at least on par with MREs, and maybe a bit better in taste quality. Hopefully I'll get a chance to try more eventually to put that theory to the test!
I extremely find it satisfying watching these MRE vids and I'm only an 11 yr old (pretty weird right??) and I have one question, where can I buy one of these???
how does he chew and swallow that fast after ye puts the food into his mouth he straight away talks is ge feeding it to his dog or something??? its only possible if he dont chew but his voice dosent even change a tone i thunk he is feeding it to his cat or dog
It's actually a case of editing out as much of the chewing noises as possible--both so you don't have to hear the sound of me eating and to attempt to make the videos as short as possible. I'm surprised more people haven't asked about that. Sometimes I try to leave in just enough time between the spoon going off camera and me saying something to prevent people from wondering, but it ends up seeming like a lot of dead air.
Amanda Jay I'm not in the army but I'm in a sort of army for secondary schools and the uniform body treats u like the army and they give u 'half' an hour to eat as it's said but the drills will always end late and they will give u less than 10 minutes to eat
+Dillon Flatt The legend of MREs includes many stories of people getting the runs from them. At the same time, a lot of people claim to get totally stopped up by them. I haven't had many problems because I try not to eat too many of them in a short period of time. The nutritional makeup of MREs is indeed unlike most "normal" foods and eating a steady diet of them can definitely mess up a person's guts for a bit. Which way it gets messed up is always a surprise!
gschultz9 Thanks. I was just wondering because currently a pretty bad stomach virus is going around my town and unfortunately I have it. Just going to play it safe and not eat my supply yet, although tempting. I think I'll stick to the Beefaroni with a side of rice xD
+April Jones more color is generally unhealthy or doesn't keep as long it seems. I feel there is too much color. Food coloring is unhealthy and they're filling it with sugar and such, fueling troops with unhealthy food that isn't even appetizing. They're losing both sides
+April Jones nope! The goodies inside do a amazing job for our morale!!! Food is food when you're in a combat zone. Or just too lazy to cook dinner at home 😁
*continued* I might've have liked a better flavor Pop-Tart, I must say ;) . And, do appreciate that MK provides a side dish, unlike the other civvie/military MREs!
I'm no veteran. but when i was younger my friends and i would celebrate spring but going out into the woods in upstate new york about a half our outside of ithaca for a few days. we would go with what ever you could carry in a book bag so we would bring a few MREs and some pellet guns to catch some squirrels if we got the chance. macaroni and chili cheese was the best.
I don't believe so--though I've never tried it. It's designed to be a one-use item that uses up all its energy. I suppose that, if you could stop the process by drying it it's possible to "save" some of that energy for a second use. Seems like it would be a big hassle for not much performance the second time around though.
One of probably few MRE reviewers I know of that doesnt chew loud as fuck right next to the microphone. Thank you for that. Almost makes this video elegant compared to "So lets give this a try *scrapes teeth against spoon* .. *SMACK SMACK SMACK*"
I'm very glad to hear that you appreciate that. It does take some extra time trying to not only eat quietly, but also editing out as much of the "noise" as possible. Believe it or not there are people who complain that I'm not really eating the stuff.
+Raven The Blood Alchemist Lets take the number 4305 for example. The first digit of the date code is the last digit of the year. For instance, 4305= 2014. The last three digits are the day. So in the example, packaged on the 305th day of 2014.
isnt only four algarisms like 5299 (201 *5* , *299* th day) a conceptual mistake? you might accidentally consume something that is 11 years old thinking it is just 1, and of course the main target is the military and they are supposed to know, but seems that saving one algarism just makes no sense is this case, why not *15299* ? after all those are supposed to last many years and might find themselves stored in remote isolated locations
That's very interesting. So they actually gave you Meal Kit Supply MREs in the cadets? Did they ever give you any IMPs?
These are civillian MREs so I doubt you did
+gschultz9 no imp's. They would cut the bags and take out the cadets warming package, meal and side meal, then they would boil it. We are these breakfast, lunch and dinner. They would hand us the empty bags, tell us to take our covers out and carry our food to the table. We had powders, the coffee and snacks were all included in the bag.
cool

Idk why but whenever i think or see MRE foods it makes my mouth melt and makes me hungry.
Same and I fell the need to get one just for fun
+lucas Rozmus same I was just thinking about getting one
yup
yup
+Vincent Greenwood lol same
I never knew how to work that instant coffee thing until I watched this video this was a great MRE tutorial great video
I'm very glad to hear that. That was my original intention when starting out doing these videos--to give someone who might be curious about MREs, but never had a chance to try one out, a chance to see what they're all about. Thank you.
+gschultz9 trying to give you some advice speed up good luck ☺
+gschultz9 I will give u a challenge do a video in 9:00
Great way to end the work week by watching the most anticipated menu "to me". Thanks!
My MRE's just arrived yesterday. I am so looking forward to your reviews on all of them. Very nice review on this one. I also agree that the tropical punch is an odd flavor for a breakfast meal... but like you said... having a variety is always nice. That's not at all what I think of as hash browns. I mean, they're not browned. More of a shredded ptato stew.
+Trish O'Connor It's hash, not a hashbrown. Should be renamed.
Yes, just "hash" is a better description.
+Trish O'Connor lol do you know what hash is?
Yes. I also know what "brown" is.
ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo dam daniel
You know what they need to put more of in MREs? Beef jerky. When I was in the Navy, I only HAD to eat an MRE one time and I noticed that right away.
Its been awhile but i had a few MRE's awhile ago that had beef jerky type product in them
they were decent but a tad bland.
well jerky is pretty salty. Maybe they think it will dehydrate the troops?
The Favorite Gentleman I believe its the cost factor they have to deal with. Jerky itself is fairly expensive for a decent sized bag and you only get so much of it. The rations i did have that did contain jerky was caffeine infused.
LOL "rest it on a rock or something" -shows diagram- "rock or something" 😂😂😂
his voice Is so soothing
Looks like a tasty menu, though it's pretty low on protein.
A motherfucking poptart! That's the last thing i would imagine being in a MRE lol.
You need it for something to burn off and so that they have something to enjoy after a while or sometimes people collect the snack part and sell them or save them for later.
It definitely serves as a morale booster and a sweat dessert after an MRE.
Ewww sweat dessert.
It sure was a sweat dessert after busting one's ass after running missions in full PPE-gear and finally get a chance to sit down and eat. lol.
The fights for having that one pop tart of the whole box of the day....
Always glad to see your reviews. Thank you.

I just started stocking up on the main entree recently after tasting this and really liking it. Very long shelf life when properly stored.

Asmr
I need to buy me one or two of these to try out. I heard the calorie count is unbelievable on these packets of goodness. My grandfather was a marine in Vietnam, now I know why he likes black instant coffee
The cocoa packet was great in the 80s when I was in the Army.
This fkn video made me grab 3 snacks during it.
same here I was like oh god that made me hungry
mudkip gaming. inc lol
The thumbnail looks like a school lunch I would not have told the difference if it didn't say MRE

One of my relatives was in U.S military, so he had some genuine MRE. It was really good.
love these types of videos where people review military stuff
I dunno why I love the way you say "spoon", but for some reason your voice sounds so amazing when you do... eh, I'm wierd already.

What is your opinion on the best MRE supplier:
XMRE

FirstStrike

+gschultz9 the most i can reply is like 5 words, this is probs my longest comment yet
Great job, as always friend ! Glad to see A different menu reviewed. Especially A Breakfast menu. Peace, Magnum, John.
+MultiMagnum62 Thank you Magnum!

I think it's cheaper to mass manufacture bags then also a sticker on when it's filled than print specific information on each batch of bags I guess..?
I have a question? does Meal kit Supply package the food or do they just get them really fresh before packaging the MRES?
+U1T1MATR1X That's a good question. I'm not sure of the answer.
I was in the army so I want you to try this, take your instant cocoa, your instant coffee, and the peanut butter add a little bit of water mixing together like a pudding and it's called Ranger pudding it is so good try it!
Nice review. Mostly wheat and starch, not very healthy. It would be filling though. Thanks
yes, you're right. I now have terrible reaction to wheat that I never did before. Makes me notice that part of any meal.
You're right, I'm sure they must do studies before designing the meals for maximum usefulness.
The corn beef hash from the 90's was my favorite when I was in the service .. with tabasco sauce!!
I've heard that was excellent (as far as MRE entrees go), but have NEVER had it myself. I missed out!
That def needs a ketchup and tobasco packet.
yea it does
I am very intrigued by these meals and rations and love watching your videos. Is there any way I could get some of these to try for myself?
People quit complaining about how unappetizing it looks, they are meant to keep you a live, not to please you.
Fun fact: In my Cadet Squadron, we call the Wheat Snack Bread "Constipation bread", for obvious reasons.
I call it communion bread, because it'll nourish your soul in the field.
You must have a deeply dead and dark soul to have a wheat snack bread nourish your soul. Andy Flores
We Canadians get the different heater the same as the genuine us mre so... yay
So I notice there are 3 kinds the green one the sopako and the genuine heaters and I noticed that sometimes they give you 2 heaters so right now I have 3 extra heaters at my cupboard
sometime you should try to use a mre but not use anything at all except the mre materials so you can test how good they are
+Gameplay All Day If you're saying I should just use what's in the MRE and not add any water or anything, check out my "Just How 'Ready-to-Eat' is an MRE?" in my "MRE Basics" series. That's pretty much what I did in that one.
Why do I like these videos so much
my FTX gave us these and my fav was the meatballs. I liked everything in them except soup and oatmeal.
Was the soup Potato and Cheese or Clam Chowder?
potato Cheese. I'm sure it tasted good I'm just squeamish and the soup looks off to me
Nice video G! Haha, October 27th is actually my birthday! Lol!
Super Video . I also have an MRE tested but from 1985
Cool! How did it hold up?
That actually looks quite lovely
I thought he was just saying "rock or something for the hell of it" but the label actually says it lol
another RUclipsr does what this guy does and he has a rock with him for this stuff. and he wrote on the rock "rock or something" haha
enjoy your reviews. - The hash browns remind me of "potatoes O'Brien " . Thank You for the review
Good to see thank you for the video.
That meal looked very tasty.
Thanks for the video.,
I do wonder, though, how well does "seared" food survive in a retort pouch?
Every soldier will miss that meal.
The Dreaded Cheese & veggie "VOMLET"!!! 😂😂😂
Why is this video maximum quality in 480p O_o? Weird...
Let's get this out on a tray .... nice
I've been eating MRE'S since my grandfather was in the army
I might not use all those drinks in one meal if I were out in the field. I'd probably ration them for other meals. Also that meal had a lot of carbs.
As always, great review!
That pop tart sounded REALLY HARD MAN.
This is better then the food in my pantry
the wheat snack bread is like the bread from a pizza lunchable
+camaeron young I'd have to try out one of those to be sure, but I think that's a very good comparison.
This is probably one of the top 10 MRE meals I have seen, minus the coffee for me, I don't drink that stuff. :)
I extremely find it satisfying watching these MRE vids and I'm only an 11 yr old (pretty weird right??) and I have one question, where can I buy one of these???
I'd like to eat "MRE", but it is hard to sell in Japan.
nice see you fron mexico
3:48 . how do you know the date code isnt 1290 (had this not been a newly introduced meal)? its the number to the right.
k really. i need this one man
how does he chew and swallow that fast after ye puts the food into his mouth he straight away talks is ge feeding it to his dog or something??? its only possible if he dont chew but his voice dosent even change a tone i thunk he is feeding it to his cat or dog
I was wondering the same thing
You're not in the military are you? Do you know how fast you have to eat sometimes?
Amanda Jay I'm not in the army but I'm in a sort of army for secondary schools and the uniform body treats u like the army and they give u 'half' an hour to eat as it's said but the drills will always end late and they will give u less than 10 minutes to eat
just came down here to watch an ad and say
NUMBER 9
Number 9, Number 9, Number 9...
For potatoes I think they might want to try making a freeze dried tater tot. That would be a nice side dish for a beef dish.
That would kind of be like coming full circle in a way. Back in the early 80s there was actually a freeze-dried (or dehydrated) "Potato Patty"!
I think I saw Steve1989 eating one in one of his videos now that I think of it.It does seem like a nice idea to have some crunchy potatoes.
Do MRE's give you the runs?
See if you can get Hold of British Army Rations
ahhh...jail coffee......good memories.
Why do I like this so much
All the food is brownish in color... some color would go a long way to make this meal more appetizing.
It is meant to keep you a live, not please you.
Riley Milligan Very true, but I'm sure that appealing food would go a long way towards good morale for your soldiers.
Or just too lazy to cook dinner at home 😁
is it just me or do MREs look better when they're not in a bag and on a plate
just thinking....re: trans fat free pound cake.... they are adding omega 3's in the next menu update. hmmm....
*continued* I might've have liked a better flavor Pop-Tart, I must say ;) . And, do appreciate that MK provides a side dish, unlike the other civvie/military MREs!
I'm no veteran. but when i was younger my friends and i would celebrate spring but going out into the woods in upstate new york about a half our outside of ithaca for a few days. we would go with what ever you could carry in a book bag so we would bring a few MREs and some pellet guns to catch some squirrels if we got the chance. macaroni and chili cheese was the best.
sounds like fun because some of these actually look tasty.
can you keep the flameless ration heater to use again if you dry out the heating pack? is that possible?
I don't believe so--though I've never tried it. It's designed to be a one-use item that uses up all its energy. I suppose that, if you could stop the process by drying it it's possible to "save" some of that energy for a second use. Seems like it would be a big hassle for not much performance the second time around though.
No but that's not really necessary. Almost if not all modern MREs have the heater I them. And you can buy them separately anyway.
Hash Browns with Bacon? It looked more like macaroni and bacon to me?
Got mine.
I know he put it on a food tray but that really looks like school food these days lol
One of probably few MRE reviewers I know of that doesnt chew loud as fuck right next to the microphone. Thank you for that.
Almost makes this video elegant compared to "So lets give this a try *scrapes teeth against spoon* .. *SMACK SMACK SMACK*"
Actually he edits out most of it
I'm very glad to hear that you appreciate that. It does take some extra time trying to not only eat quietly, but also editing out as much of the "noise" as possible. Believe it or not there are people who complain that I'm not really eating the stuff.
How do I read date codes?
+Finnian Madison If you have a few minutes, check out my video about date codes in my "MRE Basics" playlist. That should explain it.
Where did you buy the dish you out the MRE in ?
Now when you are talking about Kool aid at summer camps are you talking about Jonestown or what?
Shhhh...
lol just have to say something MRE'S are good
Oohhhhh, the wheat snack bread with bacon cheddar cheese spread is fucking delicious.
what is that packet that comes with cake
