- Footage of two massive explosions in the Chinese city of Tianjin, taken by a stunned eyewitness, captured the fear and terror of those who saw what happened. Dozens of people died and hundreds were injured when a warehouse owned by a company specialising in handling hazardous goods caught fire and exploded. City officials say they still did not know what materials were at the warehouse at the time of the fire, or what caused the blasts. Eyewitness Dan van Duren filmed the moment of the explosions, before he and others fled to avoid the danger.

This is probably the most dramatic footage of an explosion to exist. The skyscrapers up against a backdrop of a fire storm reaching to the clouds, talk about an apocalypse scene.

Laughing is a reaction that most humans do when they don’t know how to react in a situation like this and when there are other people around them. Same with if people see someone dead on the street in broad daylight in a busy city, nobody does a thing because they are afraid of other people’s reaction. But when one person takes action, the rest finally takes action as well. In this video you can see finally one person decided to leave so the rest said ‘okay’. But before that, they all just laughed even though they knew humans were dead in that first explosion. The human brain is very interesting...

The stuff of nightmares, really. We often not think of explosions as being very scary things, but here we get a perfect representation of just that. Truly frightening to the point of horror. Look up the alternative-angles footage, and you'll see footage of someone who was much closer and it is literally footage of their last seconds alive, no doubt the phone recovered by wreckage removal / rescue teams of the deceased camera person.

Bruh, that's not even what we see in the video. The first explosion was a load of nitrocellulose that hadn't been stored properly and the second was a load of ammonium nitrate that went up because of its chemical properties and the fire. Ammonium nitrate decomposes into nitrous oxide and ammonium when heated. This is an exothermic reaction so it creates a positive feedback loop, resulting in detonation. Also, the fact that nitrous oxide(one of its products) is an oxidizer doesn't help.
This was one of the largest artificial non-nuclear explosions on record.
Similar explosions include the Halifax blast of 1917, the Texas city disaster of 1947, the pepcon rocket fuel factory explosion of 1988, and the much more recent Beirut fertilizer plant explosion of 2020.

I was there during the incident. I was very lucky to survive considering the explosion reached untill 1 km away from my place in Tai Da. It was midnight I think and I didnt hear the explosion nor saw it but my father did and ran outside to see what happened. I was 7 at that time. I thank all the people who have fought against this terrible event and I am very happy that i am still alive.

Theres a video taken by a dude that was to close to the blast site, the last few seconds you just see shit tons of shrapnel.
The first explosion in the video led directly to the deaths of 25 firefighters from the fifth detachment of the Tianjin Fire Brigade, and even more poignantly, they were an average of 20 years old, and one of them had just celebrated his 18th birthday.

Some serious props to Dan for filming this so well, most cases like this the cameraman would jump or get startled and the shot of the explosion would be missed, we saw everything so clearly, its an incredible piece of historical footage now of a terrible disaster

@@PumpkinHoard yeah, I mean it seemed like it was pretty far away but you never know the possible extent of the next explosion. One great example of this was the Beirut explosion. In this case atleast there wasn't a destructive shockwave.
I saw another video from the same explosion that’s horrifying, they managed to record much closer before the first explosion and you can see the wall of fire shooting straight at then down an alley way, it cuts off just when it hits them

Honestly I would run the fuck out of there the moment I saw a glimpse of smoke or fire from that powerplant, took my family and would be gone in minutes. God knows for how long they knew it was burning? Happened to me in Bordeaux recently with the wine storages, just gathered all the information I could in 10 seconds and realized its not dangerous to me so we stayed where we were, but when I was in Charkiv and I had an ammunition storages close to my hotel I was checking it every minute out of the window and would run the fuck out if I saw any danger.

I'm guessing this is the largest non-nuclear explosion ever caught on film. Fucking huge.
Yup, the previous largest was a rocket fuel distillery that caught on fire when a worker dropped a cigarette, there were literally only 3 people within 5 miles of the explosion so no injuries (and this place was in the middle of a desert) but the guy who filmed it was like a few miles away working on a tower of some sort and he happened to have his camera on him at the time and recorded it, far less injuries compared to this though, because other than the building itself the only other damaged was some disturbed dirt.

Spent 2 yrs of my career managing the construction and startup of a mfg plant in TEDA that was 5-6 miles away from the blast. I wasn’t at the plant at the time but it did significant damage to walls, windows and sensitive mfg equipment.
