The craziest thing about this gigantic explosion is that it was only 2% the force of the bomb dropped on Hiroshima, and did not expose people to a gamma pulse or radioactive fallout. The most eye-opening thing about this blast is how much worse the blast over Hiroshima must have been on so many levels.

Almost to the day 5 years later, an explosion almost 4X larger of 2700 TONS of Ammonium Nitrate leveled a large portion of Beirut. (2700 tons of Ammonium Nitrate was equated to 1100 tons of TNT, while Tianjin's blast was equated to 300 tons of TNT)
Based upon what Beirut officials saw at Tianjin, they had FIVE YEARS to preemptively reduce/eliminate the risk.

I remember that Adam Minter wrote about this port and said it was thought to be a very well-run and safe facility. The problem was that while most people were doing their jobs properly, there were a few who were on the take (bribed to do something or not report something) and that's what led to the hazardous material being stored there.

Calcium Carbide, We used this in it's natural form to fuel Miner's acetylene Lamps. My Father and I used these exploring old Hard Rock Mines. Not near as good as Battery powered lamps but you just need the CalCarb rocks and water to have light, instead of carrying extra Batteries. And if you walk into dead air, no O2, they go out as a warning where batteries would keep working and you're dead. There are heavy gases that pool in abandoned mines. Everything from C O2, which is heavier than O2 and will collect in Un-ventilated low spots. And there are gases that come from rotting timbers, timbers used to support the back of the mine. Walk into those and you don't get a second breath, not consciously. A few breaths more and your gone.

Usage of water in portal area fires should be completely banned. Same tragedy happened this year in Bangladesh, containers filled with Hydrogen peroxide created massive explosion due to usage of water to fight small amout of flame at first. More then 40 people died and 150 were injured. Most of them were workers and firefighters.
