This was really helpful, David! You do such a terrific job of breaking concepts down in a way that's easy to understand. Quick question: If you shoot in RAW and then go back to the computer to edit the image to be what you like, do you recommend then saving the image as a jpeg + deleting the RAW file in order to save space?
this video is 3 years old but still useful. I've been on the fence using raw because of the file size and laziness. but, I'm already starting to learn to do videography in raw and might also start photography with raw. I like taking tons of photos that's why I'm also lazy to edit them. But, guess like you say, you never know when you want to improve more on that one good pics you wanted to save and edit. lol
Thank you for explaining "RAW". I had no idea what raw was or how to use it. I am about to buy a Nikon Z6 II, now I might give raw a go and see if I can work it out - with your help and explanations!
Thanks David for what you do! Your videos are top of my must watch every week! I have just started shooting raw and trying to learn lightroom. As a casual photographer that does most of my shooting in the summer the lightroom subscription doesn’t make sense to me, do you know any more affordable alternatives?
Tis crazy that I used to store all my Raw files on Dvd roms back in the day. I still go back and edit them though, with new ideas etc. I only shoot RAW. Having settings saved in Lightroom is great for quick edits.... I liked this video, I enjoy nodding along to your opinions. You could do a video (if able) on an old DSLR vs newer ones... maybe.. best of luck

But great to catch up with you again. Your entertainment and enthusiasm is priceless bro, thanks so much for sharing your experience and knowledge with us really appreciate it. Stay safe and catch up again real soon bro. God bless you.
I think the absolute white balance value is the best thing about RAW for me. Makes it much easier to homogenise white balance over a series of photos (say an event). I know some cameras have a white balance lock but mine doesn’t
I read stuff on conflicting sides. I generally want to get it right out of camera because I am trying to learn how to do get my camera to do what I want it to do. I just started doing Raw + JPG, I plan on just keeping the raw files on an external hard drive and then the JPGs in my Apple Photos. If I ever need a raw file, there it is, but I don't have to load up my personal life photos with huge files.
Hey David, Thanks for that. I have always shot in RAW, and have had a little understanding about the information difference you capture with RAW v JPEG but when I tried explaining it to a friend of mine I was a bit lost for the right explanation. I have told him to watch this video of yours.
Not really. 11:14 you pushed the TEMP to 30 on jpeg, and only to 6 on RAW? How is it justified? Why do I not see much of the highlights or Shadows coming back on Sony a6300 Raw file? I use Photoscape and not lightroom. Is it software problem?
All RAW images are not created equal. Your camera will be limited in dynamic range to the sensor in the camera. So you won't be able to pull things back as much on a file from an a6300 than you would from something like an a7RIV. But you will be able to pull more back from a RAW file out of your a6300 than out of a JPG file from your a6300
This is a good example. I shoot with jpeg + raw. I’m not sure if I can edit raw files on my iPhone in Lightroom mobile. I don’t know which file type it imports from the camera to iPhone.
This is a great comparison video. I would like to see a similar one on compressed vs uncompressed raw. If the point of shooting raw is to get as much detail as possible then why shoot compressed if there is a loss in detail?
This gave me more information in an easy to understand way than a year and a half of film school. (All we learned of RAW was that it let you punch in without degrading the image as badly and that you should only use it sparingly because it used so much space). If you ever wanted to do a video of alternate color grading software that doesn't need a subscription that would be really cool. :)
I don’t usually edit my pictures so I normally shoot on jpeg, but it really depends on whether Ik I could edit a picture to make it even better but I just do jpeg since I don’t post majority of my photos online to instagram. Mainly post on vsco
Thank you for this. I knew that there was a benfeit in shooting raw but I didn't exactly know why. I"m not a photographer I just like taking pictures. I just got back from a bucket list trip to Alaska and happened to catch the Northern Lights. I got some AMAZING pictures. However, I forgot that I had circular polorizer filter on my lens so I think the pictures aren't as bright as they could be. Thankfully...I shoot all of my Alakan trip picture in jpg + raw. The only image editing I've down is a crop and maybe a little brighten of jgp that's about it. However, I"m going to get Lightroom and edit once in a life time Northern Light and Glacier pictures so that I can have them printed and hang them in my office. Thank you for this!

I always shoot raw + Jpeg which makes viewing photos in the explorer more anoying and bloats photo storage on my drive alot. The thing is other than 10 or so photos ive printed ive never felt the need to edit a photo, mine are usually good enough thanks to canon colours, jpeg processing being good and taking 5-10 photos of the same thing just in case. If i still shot on my fuji which tended to be noisy and soft or my sony which had some of the worst colours id ever seen from a camera Id still do it but im canon only now so im finally just going to go full jpeg and delete my raws or put them on a micro sd for later if i ever want to go back.
