    OMG you were hilarious! Thanks for the vote, I bought the blue quilted maple version two years ago and the Luthier said they were infamous for necks separating at the body. Mines still good and I love it. I love the thin neck, as it does have an electric feel to it. Sold my old Melody Maker years ago and I loved the neck on that guitar. Thanks for a great show, and yes I did subscribe.

    Il also going to cut a bone nut out for mine and stick a set of some Grover tuners with black buttons on it and find some strings that will ring good and maybe lose some of that treble on it. Then pull the electronics and trick that out. They are a gorgeous looking thing, but as for sound I want it closer to a dreadnought it also has a chip on the left front of the head, not a problem there then I'll rub it out and brighten it up a tad with some 3M super fine compound touch the heads paint up blend that and look for a hard case. Do you remember the all aluminum Travis Bean electric la from the early to mid 70s. I haven't since tben. Well thanks man I enjoyed that I'll check back with you and see what you playing with as I'm on a quest to learn a bunch of acoustic guitar songs and will probably start looking for a Dreadnought Yamaha, Martin, or somethings in the mid $ range. I can't believe how many brands are out there now and beautiful custom hand made ones also, and glad Luther's are getting off their butts and getting those beauties out there. BY

    How do Ovation handle environments like Arizona?... I ask this as multiple guitars I own have been screwed up when I moved here from Australia into this dry dust hole lol. I ended up with a travel Carbon fiber guitar which works really well... but something about wooden guitars feels right...would they handle it better being half carbon?.

    OK, you like comments, here's mine (I'm the Negative Grid guy).
    As for the Ovation, I've owned two Legacy Ovations, both came with the fret-board inlays not exactly lining up with the strings--which doesn't effect playing, and not noticeable to the average person, but drives me crazy every time I look at them. I'd like to see a review on their new Legacy line (even though I've sworn them off) if you ever get a chance.
    My other comment is in reference to the Spark Amp (hey, 7 months later and it finally came in) so I'll leave that in the other video comments.
    Finally, for those who would consider an Ovations--here's my experience with them.
    I found their string alignment in the nut and bridge string guides were always off for some reason and the bridge placement was also not perfect (adding to my frustration). I zoomed in on this guitar to check these things (would have been nice to have a full face view--maybe next time)--and it didn't appear to have these issues from what I could see. Check your bridge placement, bridge string guides and nut guides along with string alignment down the neck in reference to the neck inlays and obviously 1st and 6th string spacing down the outside of the neck--hopefully they have a better Quality Assurance system in place then they did in the past?
    That's all I have--hope this helps somebody--cheers for now.

    • @GearGasms
      @GearGasms  4 года назад

      Yeah this one was lined up perfectly. The only issue was resolved with a little truss rod love. I think they’re back to doing things correctly. I had a plum burst late 90s model Celebrity Deluxe that I gigged with for years and this sounds better in the room and into a PA. It’s still no Martin or Taylor but I think it competes favorably with say Washburn in that price range.

    I just got my Celebrity Elite with spalted maple top yesterday. I got it off ebay from a reputable dealer, and I love it! I'm going to call and see if they did an action job on it since it was a floor model, because the action is incredible and there are two saddle shims in the bag with the paperwork and wrench.
    I have to say that they sound even better in person than they do on videos. They, at least mine, have a beautiful ring to them.

    • @yobaby14
      @yobaby14 4 года назад +1

      @@GearGasms They all look good to me. The thing about getting a spalted maple top is seeing the guitar you are actually buying. Some buyers buy based on a stock photo, and are disappointed when the guitar they receive isn't as nice as they thought it was going to be. It's generally not an issue, but it does happen from time to time.

  • @souloftheage
    @souloftheage 5 лет назад

    "I've never turned a truss rod in my life". Rarely, have I bought a guitar that I DIDN'T turn the truss rod to get more relief as the action was set far too LOW. People, fear NOT the GENTLE turning of the truss rod. And ONLY turn 1/16th to 1/4 at a time. Then do as this reviewer did and let the neck sit and the wood re-model under the new stress. The adding of humidity helps greatly. I thought this instrument sounded less thin and plasticy than many Ovations Ive heard. Maybe it has a MEDIUM or DEEP bowl?(cant recall what he said the bowl depth was). I would like to buy one.

    Ever since I saw an Ovation brochure in 1970, I'd wanted an Ovation, but couldn't afford one. A couple of years ago I finally had enough spare cash to buy this exact model from Sweetwater. I am SO disappointed in it.
    It took me awhile to realise that it had a lousy setup. I improved the action by removing a saddle shim and tweaking the truss rod relief. That was a slight improvement, but it STILL lacks sustain on certain strings on certain frets. So much for the so-called 55 point inspection!
    I also realised that it is NOT made in the USA, but in China. Do NOT believe the bullshit that Chinese made Ovation guitars are as good as American made. I'm telling you from experience that the Chinese manufactured Ovations are inferior to the American made.
    I now wish that I had bought a Taylor or a Martin, but I'm stuck with this log of wood.

      That’s nothing anyone can answer for you. It’s nice for the money and they play really well and feel good in the hands. But you really should go play one and then you’ll know. Would love to have you subscribe if not already and please spread the word! Thanks Calvin! 🎸🤘🏻

      GearGasms it is an older one from what I can tell. Model # is CC257

      That’s like the one I used to have. There’s a couple of old in my cover song playlist where I’m playing it. It was nice- especially in the PA!

    I heard the story of an expensive custom ovation shallowback bought directly from Ovation that developed a hairline crack out of nowhere and not only would ovation not honor the warranty, they said it was his fault and blocked the twitter feed. Doesn't sound like a company that has good customer or quality skills.

      I’m not sure who owns Ovation at the moment but so far this has been a great guitar for my son.

      @@GearGasms Drumworks out of Socal owns them. Its sad that the quality is declining, they were great at one time

      Even a Drumworks Ovation is a fine instrument at the price point it is.

      I agree - it’s not expensive and holds its own very well against other stuff in its price point like Washburn and Takamine! Would love to have you subscribe if not already!

    Love the older 70's and 80's American made Ovations. With all respect I don't think your guitar sounds good at all. Looks great though.

      It’s my son’s and it sounds better in the room than it came out on video - I was just using a shotgun mic on the camera- and definitely sounds better with someone other than me playing it. But to me it sounds like a $500 guitar and not even in the same league as my $4000 Taylor. Thanks for watching and commenting and would love to have you subscribe if not already, Bill!

    If you play guitar you should know how a truss road works dude... Even more if you want to review a guitar!

    • @GearGasms
      @GearGasms  4 года назад

      It’s not that I didn’t know how to do it, it’s just never been necessary nor did I have the balls had it been necessary. You can review any number of things without knowing how to do maintenance on it. But thanks for the comment

      @@GearGasms Well, I didn't mean to be mean! I was also afraid of using the truss road the first time but if you do it little by little you can not damage the guitar, I live in the Netherlands and the weather is severe here. I have to take my guitar on a gig bag to give lessons so it's being exposed to warm and cold weather a few times a day and the neck goes bonkers. I am used to adjust the neck a few times a year.
      I ordered the same model yesterday to teach my pupils. I wanted a strong guitar and a 12 string one. So I hope to get it soon. Take care and have fun!

      @@GearGasms Yes, we are fine, we have a lockdown but not severe. I still teach some students face to face and some other ones online. But I am getting tired of the whole thing. Let us hope it will soon be over! I heard on the news that USA is in a lot of trouble, too bad, really, USA is a very cool place! Take care as well!
