      Actually, Your mower is identical to the Ariens IKON XD. It is a lot heavier duty ZTR than this EDGE in this video. By the way the Gravely ZT XL is also the same but has the heavier duty ZT2800 trannys.

    Wanted to give everyone some thoughts on mine here... I purchased my 2020 ariens edge 34 inch zero turn for $2800 out the door. Since then I have put 13 hours on it mowing 17 lawns per week. (My yards are small). Just a little advice to newer zero turn owners: I would learn very early how to do a 3 point turn. (So you do not rip up your lawn or a customers lawn). I also would start up your mower and let it run for a minute or two to let it warm up before you hop on it and go full throttle mowing. The dealer told me my first oil change can be @ 50 hours but I would recommend your first one @20 hours just because if there’s metal shavings/debris in the engine you can get them out. Overall this mower has been great I can fit through gates as small as 35-36 inches and it cuts great. Hope this helps!

      Thanks Jacob, I’ve been considering the 34” model, but debated the 42”. I have a 1/3 acre yard and just want to speed up mowing, but still get a clean, “push mower” cut look/striping. How would you compare a smaller deck to say at 42”?

    Ariens is the industry leader in snowblowers, I love mine. I owned an Ariens riding mower (not a ZT) and it was a great, reliable mower. I recently bought a Bad Boy MZ Magnum ZT and I’m blown away how tough this thing is. Easiest machine I’ve ever seen to work on. They are the residential industry leader IMHO.

    I love mine. I bought the 42 edge. The only issue I had was the discharge shoot had a habit of digging into the ground when turning right. It did break on me my first year. However I contacted Ariens and they sent me a new one at no cost. Their customer support is A1 in my book.

    I should have watched your video reviews before all the others, I found a lot of useful information simply from following your explanations of key features and how these mowers are constructed. I'm glad I did not "fast-track" my mower decision out of frustration of seeing the grass grow to knee height as what you said was indeed important and note-worthy .. simply stated you do outstanding reviews. You've got an excellent team - kudos to your photographers too ... well done.

    I ordered the exact configuration as well. Excellent mower for the price. Endless power from that Kohler V-twin given how light the machine is. I thought they had forgotten to include the anti-scalp wheels until I mowed for the first time and realized that yes, with the short wheelbase it doesn't need them. Great cut quality. I only wish the seat was a bit higher as I'm a bigger guy too!

    I've got a really steep grade in my backyard and I was pleasantly surprised to see that my Ariens Edge 42 had no problems getting up the hill. I've found that if you use a bungee cord or zip tie and keep the discharge chute in the up position, you have way less clumping from tall grass. So far, I really love this machine!

    • @PaulSikkema
      @PaulSikkema  2 года назад +1

      Yes, I really like the traction of the Ariens Edge and Ikon XD mowers. They are better than most of the other mowers on the market. I really like that they zero-turn easier without leaving marks on your lawn.
      I use the bungee cord to only raise the discharge up an inch or so. That's enough to let the grass spread evenly. Remember - having the discharge chute all the way up allows the mower to throw rocks, sticks, baseballs and anything that touches the blades. Those thrown objects will break windows, dent cars and seriously hurt people. If you mow with the discharge up NO ONE should be in your yard or be within 300 feet of where you are mowing. Yes, I've thrown baseballs out of the park (over 400 feet) by hitting them with a zero-turn.

    • @ciphercode2298
      @ciphercode2298 Год назад

      @@theianpaulmaxwell If I had a steeper grade to mow,but wanted a zero turn I'd look at a cub cadet zts. Zero turns,because of them having swiveling casters in the front have a real hard time holding a hill. Cub cadet zts uses a steering wheel that controls the front wheels,but still offers zero turn maneuvering and it still has 2 transmissions which on a hill act like a locking differential. I'm pretty sure they're rated for slopes of 20 degrees. They start out just over $4000 though,but definitely worth looking at. They call their steering synchro steer because it works in tandem with both transmissions actuating the appropriate power to the drive wheels while turning.

    Very nice and informative review Paul ! I agree with most of your comments, however I find that I feel somewhat cramped when sitting on the mower. The foot panel is a little short and may not be suitable for people of larger stature. The seat is not very comfortable. There is a 2 year bumper to bumper non-transferable warranty on the mower. Overall, it's a very good mower.

    • @PaulSikkema
      @PaulSikkema  4 года назад

      Yes, I talk about who it fits people in the mowing video. It is a great mower for people of small or "average" size but it is too small for large/tall people. Move up to the the IKON XD if you want more room.
      Very, very few manufactures offer a transferable warranty. If you are buying one for someone else be sure to register it in their name.

    Paul.... thanks for answering my previous question :-) BUT now I have more, lol. I was looking seriously at the Ariens 42" Edge, but it is getting HORRIBLE reviews on the way it cuts.... people saying it leaves raggety uncut look down the middle of the deck. I have an old John Deere 42 inch that does that and I HATE IT.... price aside, who makes a CLEAN CUTTING 42" zero turn. BTW, I got the brilliant idea I could fix that John Deere.... replaced the 7 inch deck spindle pulleys (2 blades) with 5 1/2 inch pulleys (bought for $15) to kick the blade tip RPM up but that didn't help much..... something just wrong with the deck design. I'm really kind of limited to 42" (gates). A friend of mine has an old (1997) 60 inch Dixie Chopper... it's so plain and ugly he calls it Frankenstein, but it is the cleanest cutting mower ever.... rough ground or smooth ground..... makes his newer eXmarks look like crap.

    • @PaulSikkema
      @PaulSikkema  3 года назад

      Just to be clear - the mower cuts great but when you attach the mulch kit it leaves strips of grass down the middle. The problem was the mulch kit - not the mower. Ariens has fixed that July last year and if you get a mulch kit now it won't leave strips of grass. That said,
      I prefer the cut of the Ariens IKON X, the Toro Timecutter and the Cub Cadet XT1 42. The Deere 400 series ZTRs with the deep deck also cut exceptionally well. One of the worse cutting decks is the Simplicity. (Keep asking questions - we'll figure out the best one for you)

    • @PaulSikkema
      @PaulSikkema  3 года назад +1

      It really depends on two things. 1. Are you happy with the EDGE? The Ikon XD won't mow any better - it's just a stronger built mower. 2. Is you lawn rough and twists the frame of the EDGE? If it does the IKON XD will last longer because the frame and deck mounts are stronger. The IKON XD also uses a longer life engine. (you get what you pay for)

    I have the 52" and really like it with one exception. The rear turf tires suck. Goes up and down a slope fine but worry if going sideways on a hill and can tell you that I've pulled this mower out of a slightly wet area where it will instantly lose traction. Better tires aren't available and would void the warranty. FYI.

    • @PaulSikkema
      @PaulSikkema  3 года назад +1

      Zero-turns, especially residential models are not good at all for mowing across slopes. They are even worse when going downhill and then trying to turn. They also are horrible if you have wet areas. When I had the lawn service I always carried 300 foot of rope so I could pull the ZTRs out a soft spot without tearing up the lawn with the truck. Check out my article on mowing slopes with ZTRs: todaysmower.com/lets-get-real-hills/

      this is one of the better ztr's for cutting an uneven lawn because the deck is supported on all four corners. Paul.... you've been pretty patient with me :-) I guess my priority is a clean cut. I am pretty mechanical, don't really care whether it is a Briggs, Kal, or Kohler. I have a little 28" cub cadet and it does a nice cut, BUT that automated choke SUCKs big time. It doesn't want to start when it's hot... I've adjusted the carb (limited as that is) but even a warm engine sometimes needs a choke. AND I'm not crazy about a fuel injected engine... when they're trouble, they are trouble. The 28 inch Cub Cadet walk behind does a better job than the 30" Toro walk behind and when you get to the end of the row you just whirl it around like a zero turn... you don't have to lift the front end of the ground and turn it like the Toro... and I was always a Toro man. These 42" zero turns are mostly within $300 of each other so I don't care whose name is on it, I just want it to cit clean. I maintain my tools.... retired. (more therapy, lol) Too old to run.... keep my guns clean too. lol
    : Anyway, was leaning toward the EDGE, lightweight, doesn't have the heavy overhead bar roll type crap which I don't care about. They're all about the same price.... why do you prefer the Ikon X as to cut? Tractor Supply carries the Cub Cadet and offer sales on occasion. I want the option of the bagger.... I strongly suggest you sit on one before you buy. It's a small mower - too small for me. My daughter and son-in-law are "average"size though and they love it.
      The IKON X is a a stronger, heavier duty mower and it fits me a lot better. The IKON X also has a 3 blade deck. (yes 3 blades on a 42) There is a lot of overlap on the blades so it never leaves a strip of uncut grass.
      If you get the EDGE and you want to mulch - order the mulch kit directly from Ariens. That way you'll get the revised version that doesn't leave a strip of grass.
      One thing to know - Ariens uses a powered bagger. Its another $300 more than the bagger on a Cub Cadet. (everyone else uses the standard, non-powered bagger) The powered bagger is great because you can bag anytime - even when the fresh grass is wet. (the power comes off the deck - there is no extra engine)
      The Ariens IKON X stripes well and you can get a striping kit for the Cub Cadet.

      It is a good choice. For over an acre I would suggest stepping up to the 52 inch deck. You will get done faster and the wider deck will allow you to trim around stuff easier than a mower with a 42 inch deck.

      Take care of it. Change the oil every 25 hours, sharpen the blades every week and keep at least one extra set because you will wear them down quickly compared to a commercial mower. Make sure you balance the blades when you sharpen them so you don't tear out the spindles. Grease everything that needs grease regularly and replace anything that breaks right away. If you do that it continue to work until it pays for itself. (By the way, I don't recommend the mulch kit on the 42 inch deck) Side Discharge and your belt will last longer.

    • @rabbit929
      @rabbit929 3 года назад +2

      I do industrial maintenance for a living, and I will be the first to say that overgreasing is the primary killer of bearings.
      If you hit it directly hard with a pressure washer, it’s a good idea to grease it. If not, don’t bother. 1 pump per year is more than enough.
      The bearings that last the longest, are the bearings people don’t seem to know are there. So spindle bearings, just enough to get the water out after pressure washing.
      Wheel bearings, 1 pump per year. Once the seal is destroyed, the bearings death sentence has begun. Not trying to sell you a mower by all means, but I do know that over greasing causes a bearing to have to “push” the grease aside, and generates heat. On a spindle that’s no big deal but a wheel bearing will generate heat, and cause it to sweat all the grease out, then fail.
      Even if it has grease zirks, your better off not greasing it at all then overgreasing it. I have thousands of bearings in my industrial plant that have never seen a shot of grease and have been running for 3 years at 1400rpms nonstop, we began this practice as the greased bearings don’t last nearly as long.

    • @PaulSikkema
      @PaulSikkema  3 года назад

      Most modern commercial spindles have a weep hole that let's excess grease out of the spindle. That keeps the bearings from blowing the seals if too much grease is put in. It you have a model without the hole you can make your own by drilling a very small hole into the side of the spindle.

    • @PaulSikkema
      @PaulSikkema  3 года назад +1

      Yes, The EDGE mulches very well. Just remember to mulch your grass properly. Only cut one-third of the grass stalk. For example if you are cutting at 3 inches you should only let the grass get to 4 to 4.5 inches before you cut it. That means if you mulch all the time you may have to cut your grass more than once a week when the grass is growing quickly in the spring.
      Mowers also do not mulch well when the grass is wet - they will leave clippings on the top of the turf.
      Mulching leaves are no problem. It will chew up any amount into fine particles.

      I owned my own landscape company in the 90's and was one of the first to buy zero-turns to replace the walk-behinds and Toro Groundsmasters that were popular back then.
      I also have many years of experience developing training for nuclear power plant maintenance personnel. That experience helps me to easily analyze how mowers work and ask the right questions from the engineers so I understand the details.
      Finally, I'm a farm kid. I was tearing apart mowers to see how they worked long before I learned how to ride a bike...

    I’m trying to decide between the Ariens Edge 42 (915283) and the Toro TimeCutter 42 (75746).
    My local dealer sells both. And says both are great machines. He doesn’t recommend one over the other. So it’s essentially a coin flip.
    Toro has longer warranty by one year. And the smart speed system.
    Ariens has bigger rear wheels. And 4 point deck. And the flip up floorboard.
    Both are fabricated decks.
    The Ariens is about $50 more. So essentially the same price.
    Any suggestions on which one to choose?

    • @PaulSikkema
      @PaulSikkema  Год назад +1

      He's right - both are good mowers.
      I strongly suggest you sit on the two machines to see which one fits you better. Why? I'm too big for the EDGE and I have a hard time using it because of that.
      One other mower to look at. The Ariens IKON 42 is a solid step up from the EDGE and the Timecutter. Theo mower is built heavier, it is a completely new design, and the deck is arguably the best cutting residential deck on the market right now. It has an upgraded seat, better motor, lights and the steering levers are so strong you can use them to get on and off the mower. It's only $150 or so more and well worth the extra cost if you want a mower to last many, many years.

    • @mrmichaeljmoore
      @mrmichaeljmoore Год назад +1

      The IKON does look nice. And it upgrades the warranty to 3 years.
      But it’s $3,899. The Toro 42(75746) is &3,449. And the Ariens EDGE is $3,499.
      My total property is only 1/2 acre. And I’m guessing about .3 acre of lawn. I’m not sure the $300 increase is worth it?
      As far as size, I’m average build. 5’9”, 175 pounds so the smaller EDGE isn’t an issue.
      This is quite a tough decision.

    • @mrmichaeljmoore
      @mrmichaeljmoore Год назад

      I’m still deciding between the EDGE and Timecutter. I think the IKON is too much machine for my smallish yard.
      The EDGE has a Briggs EXi2000 mower and the Toro has a Kohler 7000. Is one better than the other? Any concerns about the Briggs motor?
      The Ariens has bigger rear tires. I do have one section of my lawn that has some slope to it. I wonder if the smaller rear tires on the Toro will give me any issues.
      The Ariens has a 4 point deck. And the Toro is 3 point. And I saw you stand on the Ariens deck in the video. That was impressive. Is there a big difference there between the mowers?
      And the warranty difference.
      3 years/300 hours for Toro
      2 years/150 hours for Ariens
      I like how you said Ariens has lots of videos for homeowners to do their own work. Which one is easier for a homeowner to work on? Toro or Ariens?
      Thank you for your help with this decision.

    • @PaulSikkema
      @PaulSikkema  3 года назад

      The powered bagging systems for the larger mowers is excellent but I don't have any experience with the non-powered bagger for this mower. So I don't know how well it actually bags. That said, it is built very well and built a lot better than the MTD baggers.
      Non-powered baggers in general handle dry leaves and dry grass well. They will also adequately bag grass clippings on a sunny day. They will NOT handle wet leaves and wet grass well at all.
      If you want to bag all the time I suggest considering to mulch. Raise your deck up and mow at 3-4 inches. Mow more often so you are cutting off no more than 2 inches at a time.
      If you just want a bagger for leaves I suggest mulching them and then use a good lawn sweeper like the AgriFab 44 homedepot.sjv.io/kAJKV to pick them up.

    • @PaulSikkema
      @PaulSikkema  3 года назад

      Every small ZTR - no matter who makes it - suffers from traction problems. The mower are too light. They will slide down slopes and are almost impossible to turn on a slope. It's really hard to turn on flat turf without them leaving divots. They work fairly well on a good, well established lawn but any lawn that is sandy or has bare ground they will tear them up.
      If you are buying it because you have a small gate I always suggest widening the gate and getting a 42 instead.

      95% of the time the choke cable needs to be adjusted.
      1. Pull the choke knob out so the choke is fully closed.
      2. Follow that choke cable around the mower until you see where the other end clamps on the engine.
      3. The clamp holds the outer part of the cable.
      4. Loosen that clamp and slide the cable 1/8 to 1/4 inch to the right.
      5. Tighten the clamp
      The engine should start right up. Let me know how it goes!

      Dealers usually carry the Kohler - the big box stores carry the Briggs and the Briggs is $100 less. Personally I've never had an issue with either engine except I've had to adjust the valves on the Briggs after about 200 hours. So, if you are mowing an hour or less a week you will never have any problems with either engine.

    • @PaulSikkema
      @PaulSikkema  3 года назад

      For most homeowners battery powered string trimmers, blowers etc. is the way to go. I personally like the Toro 60 volt MAX line but Ryobi also has a good line of hand held and walk-behind mowers.
      If I review a Ryobi this year it will be the new 54 inch model with the fabricated deck.
      Right now Ryobi, EGO and Cub Cadet/Craftsman are the only residential models available and they are limited to about 2 acres max for run time.
      Ryobi is still using SLA Lead Acid batteries to keep the cost down but I have a feeling you will be replacing them every 4-5 years. ($600 plus)
      Cub Cadet doesn't have a zero-turn at this time
      EGO's new one looks promising but it will be $5000.
      I'm going to wait to see what happens with the new administration. If this President gets gas prices back up to $4-5 a gallon you'll see a lot more interest in electrics from the major brands like Toro, Ariens and others.

    • @PaulSikkema

      A big advantage this mower has for small lawns is that it is very lightweight. If you have to mow the lawn the same way every time it won;t leave grooves as quickly as a heavier commercial mower. That said,
      A residential zero-turn is designed to mow your yard about one hour a week, 25-30 times a year or about 40 hours a year. Based on that the mower will last you at least 10 years. A commercial mower is designed to mow 30-40 hours a week and last 10 years.
      So, if you use this mower commercially on 30 lawns a week, 15 minutes a mow, 30 times a year that's 300 hours.
      I suggest you price your mowing so that you can replace this mower every 2 years.
      I strongly suggest you look at the Ariens XD 42 instead. It's a much heavier-duty mower for only a few hundred more.

      I'm letting my daughter and son-in-law use this one and they love it. They are mowing a flat, 1/2 acre, in-town lawn. It's light, nimble, and cuts perfectly.
      The Simplicity never gets high ratings for cut quality or dependability. I'm also concerned about the brand at this time. Lat year Briggs put the division up for sale - no one wanted it. Then Briggs filed for bankruptcy and now a holding company controls it. Since Simplicity is not a huge money-maker I'm concerned that the holding company may just drop the Simplicity line altogether. That said,
      If your lawn is rough, or is more than a 1/2-1 acre I suggest you also look at the Ariens IKON XD. It's much heavier duty and only a few hundred dollars more.
