I was at a gathering of particular diocese recently. There was a Cork man there who lives in Donegal and works for the Church. Spoke about how renewal cannot happen unless we help people develop a personal relationship with Christ. He actually also mentioned about a crisis in prayer, meaning that most people know how to say vocal prayers which are important, but so few know how to listen to God in prayer and hear Him speaking specifically to them. He said this is what the focus should be on. He spoke about the need for evangelisation first and how this is the deepest identity of the Church, because this leads to salvation of souls.
There was stunned silence after he finished. If an alien walked into the room then, they wouldn't have received as strange a look as this man. It hit me then that the people leading the day who are in leadership in our Church are not on same wavelength.
A few days later I happened to be in a Church in Donegal and saw this man with who I assume is his wife and five young children. And they were praying with the kids near the tabernacle. And I thought wow, this guy gets what being Christian is all about.
This video today reminded me of that. Well said.

I know this family. Courage is very rare these days. A lot of people in the church tip toe around topics as they know it will get negative responses or silence. There is a lot of good happening in the church but it needs more courageous people like the person you are speaking about willing to speak at these events and tackling the objectives head on

Very good. There was an excellent talk organised in Donegal this past week on evangelisation. Said that unless we build a personal relationship with the person of Jesus Christ, nothing else will work. Said Irish Church is currently in maintenance mode and managing decline but needs to change to mission mode. Church exists for purpose of evangelisation for the salvation of souls.
They were right. We do need a complete change of mindset in Ireland.

You hit the nail on the head... People don't know Christ and He is not convenient with their lifestyle. It's heartbreaking to witness. People with zero experience with abuse within the Church hold that as a candle of perceived righteousness to not use the Holy Sacraments. Even if not directly affected. Then this was the gates of hell opened for women's Lib, LGB, abortion, sex ed curriculum the list goes on. We need to pray relentlessly for these people. They all all Christs children and are most definitely lost! I pray they have a profound experience with Christ and start living their real potential in Him. satan will do everything to stop them realising their mission.

You've been candid and open in this podcast. Many of us were lapsed Catholics also who have come back to the sheepfold. It's important that people hear our stories and how we realized our errors or our doubts.
Many saints went through what they call a spiritual famine or attack and sometimes GOD allows this to let us find The Truth and become stronger.
It's good that you are calling out The Church in Ireland. They have taken a back seat especially since The Reforms of Vatican 2. The moral compass in the country has almost been extinguished.
Most of it is because of the lack of proper cathechises in schools. Religious knowledge is now ecumenical (about all the other sects in the world and not about The Truth of Revelation). Luckily I was taught what The Church always taught for 2,000 years back in the 60's. That was the last bastion of The Faith being taught in Ireland. They weren't afraid to talk about hell, purgatory and sin. They also concentrated on the Divinity of Jesus in The Eucharist being transformed in the physical sense, not just a re-enactment of The Last Supper.
I'm so glad that The Truth of 2,000 years since Revelation was taught to me then. I wouldn't like to be cathechises in this day and age!
The abuse crisis didn't help but, there comes a time when they must get over it by exposing it and casting it out of the Church. This includes vetting those with inclinations in that direction to not be allowed into seminaries. It's a bit like cleaning up an area that is infested with drugs. They need to tackle it and get on with preaching the Gospel in its fullness. Not preach one side and forget the other.
If they get back to their true mission then the Church will right itself again. Confessions will become paramount, Church attendance will increase and The Faithful will believe fully once again in Eucharist as being the summit of our Faith and truly physically The Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ our Savior!

I agree if the laity know their vocation it will bear many religious vocations, perhaps more effectively than the local bishops can foster.
The sermon today from the diocesan Bishop was all about protecting God's creation and the bodies that are being started to promote this, a topic that seems to be coming more to the fore in the Church. I can't recall , Fatima, Lourdes or La Salette stressing this message. Feed the sheep!

I agree with you re people not sitting at the front of the church. I went to Mass in a chapel in a village in Donegal that I visit. I was totally shocked that no one sat in the first 6-8 rows on either side. I was sitting alone. At first I thought maybe they were going to be filled with the choldren of the parish but no.
I asked the priest afterwards why no one sat there but he couldn't answer. I thought it was very sad.

There's a sort of reluctance to go into the front seats in parts of Donegal. There's a fear of being seen as a "holy joe" or kissing the altar rails..... I remember a priest saying people who sit up front are able to get to heaven too but the remark was lost on the people at the back.

This was powerful. There is no denying your love for Christ and His Church. It was very moving and equally applicable to those of us on the other side of the pond. As a member of the parish pastoral council, I find myself constantly frustrated by the constant calls to activism. As if another marketing campaign or another committee will fix what ails us. WE NEED PRAYER! Thank you and God bless you and your audience.

I constantly struggle with sermons because now I can see the focus of our priests is so misguided ...
Today while visiting a parish church a charismatic lovely strong speaking priest made the whole focus
    (from all of todays readings)
about how we need to build bridges with all faiths..
( didn't specifically describe that process)
but was saying instead of judging people if other faiths thinking we as Catholics are better we need to not judge etc ...
Nothing wrong with that of course,
but his polarizing of Catholic judgement and non judgement is not the full messages at all from today's readings...
He omitted that actually Jesus said
don't stop those who do "miracles in my name"
In My Name ( That is mega important ...need not focus on errors of other faiths but we need priests to preach truth of ours)
He never mentioned Jesus speaking truth and to have fear of the Lord etc ..
    what that means ...
Everyone at mass was certainly left with the message that all faiths are ok with God ..
that is just not true ..
Jesus need not have come at all if that was true.
the teachings of the holy Spirit and of Jesus in today's readings were basically ignored
and one aspect or perspective over focused on...
The thing is this priest is a good and I'd say holy man
    That is beautiful to behold
but the congregation were not taught truth today ..
and at the conclusion of mass as the choir beautifully sang Glen Campbell's song
    " try a little kindness"
Listening gto the words as everyone clapped
it summed up the the whole ethos of the Catholic church right now ..
    everywhere !

I will try and meet our Bishop in Gougane Barra next week.
We were supposed to have a Mass there commemorating St Finbarr today but the weather was so bad it was called off.
But hopefully next week, the big draw will be apparently Bishop Fintan should be there. If he'll talk to us, be great! I believe it's 1430 Rosary and 1500 Mass.
If you've never been there, great place to visit. West Cork is lovely!

Same thing here in England. A lot of bishops are just managing decline. Our diocese is good at generating paperwork and bureaucracy that bogs priests and lay volunteers down. But that doesn't bring souls to the good news of Christ. I know it's all to easy to moan about the failings of others and change has to start with the things we can control and that's ourselves, not the bishops and bureaucrats.

    Great podcast, Robert.
Your statement that for many Jesus is an idea, rather a real person/2nd Person of the Trinity.
He lived in Judea and He preached, He performed miracles, He was killed, He rose from the dead 3 days later. He is not an idea. He is real.
The Church has to aim to imbue its members with the lesson that the only task of the church is the saving of souls.
The saving of souls happens in this life. We pray and work to saves souls in this life, for the next life.

Perhaps the reason the Gospel isn't preached by bishops priests and deacons is that they themselves don't really believe in the Gospel or that it can't accomplish anything valuable. Jesus calls everyone to "Reform your life, repent and believe in the Gospel." Believing in the Gospel leads to reforming our lives from a state of sin to a state of grace through repentance, forgiveness and participation in the Holy Mass. Why aren't those who are "in persona Christi" not speaking His word calling the people to redemption. Without the Word of God there is no hope for mankind.

If all religions lead to God and Jesus is God will they lead to Jesus or will they deny him as God

The message is very real and relevant for salvation, but the Jesus, the Messiah, the Christ, the anointed One that is portrayed in the New Testament in reality, NEVER existed in real time or place.
