Bonnie's brother had his wedding reception in a hotel I worked at...hearing bonnie singing Angel from Montgomery and their dad John Raitt the broadway star singing Oklahoma thru the closed doors of the hotel ballroom was cool as hell. Hotel customers walking past had no idea what they were actually hearing was live and not a wedding dj.
Bonnie wrote this song after seeing an news program about a Olivia Zand who met her donor who received her son's heart. She was so moved she wrote this song.🙏🙏❤️❤️ I cry everytime I hear this song because I am a recent liver transplant recepient post 23 days. ❤❤❤
While the song was based on a news program, at the time BR was mourning the death of her dear friend and singer song writer legend John Prine, who after surviving cancer, died of COVID. BR said she was devastated by JP's death and wrote the song as a message that even when living with a great loss, life can bring you hope and comfort.
The story of the song was inspired by a true story Bonnie learned about in the media. From the Wiki: In an interview with American Songwriter, Raitt explained that her initial inspiration for the song came after she saw a human interest piece on the news in 2018 about a woman who donated her deceased child's organs and was meeting the man who received his heart. The segment moved Raitt to the degree that she was compelled to write a song about the selfless act, noting "I just lost it. It was the most moving and surprising thing. I wasn't expecting it. I vowed right then that I wanted to write a song about what that would take. Every time I hear about a family donating organs when their child has been killed, or there's some sort of sudden death - as if you're not in grief and shock enough - to have the view and the compassion and the love to be able to pay it forward like that is so incredible"
On 4/26/2019 I received a new heart, from a brave family and donor. Bonnie is great for giving attention to Organ donation. I have no words for my gratitude to my donor. Maybe someday the family will contact me. So I can at least try. 💔🖤❤️
Blues singers just get better with age. Saw her in concert twice in the 70's. She has always been the best. Glad to see another generation appreciate her skill. Enjoy your commentary. Short, sweet and to the point.
It made me cry the first time I heard it and has every time since then. It's not only the sorrow of losing a loved one but it affecting your whole life with sadness until finally achieving peace or "grace" as she says.
Yeah Harri, she can break your heart. I have 21 of Bonnie's solo albums and countless collaborations. She's on of the best slide guitarists in the world, a superb blues writer and singers. In a word THE BEST.
What a great song . I have listened to it sooo many times , and still my eyes well up. What writing and what singing . Talent unmatched. To have this song at this time in her career, I’m very happy for her.
When I first heard this song I was sitting in my chair crying. My wife asked me if I was okay. Took me a long time to tell her. This soulful song reaches into and won't let go
Bonnie is indeed a TREASURE, a musician's musician, so much heart and soul in her music.. but she "outdid herself" with THIS amazing song! As others noted, such a hard-working musician that didn't often get much of the recognition she deserved, so what a TREAT to see that look of complete SHOCK on her face when she won THREE Grammys re: that album/song! No one ever deserved it more! 🥰
Great choice Terry! Bonnie Raitt is one of those original artists from the Troubadour club in LA during the sixties. So many wonderful artists were discovered there; Linda, Jackson, Elton, Eagles to name just a few. I have often thought that Bonnie Raitt never received the acclaim she really deserved. She certainly has longevity on her side, as Harri has pointed out. Thanks Terry and Harri 🌺✌️
The title track from her 18th album, " Just Like That" from 2022, this song was inspired by the loss of Bonnie's dear friend John Prine. She said she was carrying a piece of him in her heart. ❤ Told in the perspective of the grieving Mom, the lyrics are so sad and breath taking at points, that Bonnie delivers beautifully. The guitar is so phenomenal and blends effortlessly with the pain of the tune. Multiple awards for this precious song. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Terry. 👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
This sounds beautiful, great storytelling, and I love when the story is told not another word is added, just an outro that leaves you to sit with what you just heard.
I play "Just Like That" at least once a month. Ms. Raitt shows us in the first stanza and refrain how the deep the pain ("no knife can carve away the stain, no drink can drown regret") such a loss must hit the survivors of a death of a child, particularly if there is any chance that the survivor could feel responsibility for the death, however unintended it may be. But the redemption found in the second half of the song is as overwhelming as the pain is in the first half. "Just like that, your life can change, look at what the angels send" is followed by something that lifts the hardest of hearts. In his 1993 farewell speech (ruclips.net/video/HuoVM9nm42E/видео.html ), Coach Valvano urges us to laugh, think, and cry every day. Bonnie Raitt's "Just Like That" gives you a full daily ration of all three. A lot of songs have meant a lot to me over the years, but this song has a special place of honor for me: someday, I hope to visit my Olivia Zand, for I know that there is someone who lost a son, a brother, or a lover in early April 2015, and his heart beats in my chest now.
Terri - Aside from Bonnie Raitt being my favorite female performer over the past five decades, this is an outstanding submission. The fact that this is the title track from her 2022 album and a Grammy winner clearly demonstrates that Bonnie Raitt has lost none of her fantastic skills. The lyrics are so moving and deep while telling the story behind this song. Harri, your professional review and knowledge are fully displayed and well-earned. Brilliant submission, review, and song. Bravo!!
Bonnie was clearly SHOCKED to hear her name called when they announced she was the winner of the Song of the Year Grammy. She had zero expectation of winning considering she was competing against Taylor Swift, Beyonce and Adele.
All the other Song Of The Year nominees were the regular “stuff”. This blew me away the very first time I heard it. Shocked it got the votes. If this touched you I STRONGLY invite you to listen to “Down The Hall” on the same album. It’s even MORE powerful. 🙏
To hear her voice at its peak, listen to Takin My Time, Three Time Loser, Gamblin’ Man…ballads are ok but she can really belt out a hardcore blues tune.
I don't listen to very much "modern day" music, but this song hit me like a ton of bricks. Such pain and then joy. She saw or read about a situation like this one and it touched her so deeply she felt impelled to write a song about it. No frills, just a stripped back beautiful love story. Well done, Harri! I totally agree with your reaction and thoughts you shared! Another song from that album is "Down the Hall" - another song that will make you think and feel. (Listen carefully to the lyrics)
Can you even imagine what that "heard her son's heartbeat" moment must have been like?......By the way, her competition for "Song of the Year" were Adele, Beyonce, Harry Styles and Taylor Swift
I see you talk about happy songs a lot, when you are covering blues and sad songs. For me happy songs are easy. Yes, there are great ones, but most are a dime a dozen. It’s easy to share happiness. But the best songs hit you deep. Even if you haven’t experienced that pain, a really masterful song conveys it, and that is perfection. Much harder to share pain than happiness. So when a song like this makes me feel so much, it makes me happy. Thus, sad songs that really move me make me happy!
Beyonce was the fan favorite to win and there was a lot mad people after Bonnie was announced the winner. One headline read Beyonce robbed by unknown singer if you can believe that
The writing style in this song is surely influenced by John Prine. Several lines remind me of some from his songs. I have been a fan of Bonnie since 1974. Have seen her in concert about five times. But to be honest this recording is okay but nothing special to me. And if this song won a Grammy it may be a reflection on the current state/decline of music.
Bonnie Raitt wrote the song as result of the loss of her dear friend John Prine of COVID. BR said she was overcome with grief and wanted to write a song of hope and comfort in times of great loss.
She'll be 74 in a couple weeks and still sounds the same (voice is a little deeper) as the first time I heard her in 1971.
Her voice is so beautiful and natural -it's wonderful that she still loves to sing
🎉 Bonnie is just... incomparable... Beautiful, in all manors and ways... and I will Love her as long as I live. And be it tears ...or smiles.
Yes, ❣️

I wish you well pixie. Lucky girl live well live long.
Yes, the song was inspired by a news story, but Olivia Zand is a fictional character in Bonnie's song.
While the song was based on a news program, at the time BR was mourning the death of her dear friend and singer song writer legend John Prine, who after surviving cancer, died of COVID. Bonnie is a very rare treasure.

She still gets me after all these years. ♥♥♥ Thanks, Harry!

When I heard this on the radio it stopped me cold. Masterful songwriting
Oh, yeah! So glad you got to this song. Bonnie is a class act.
Every single notes on that guitar made much more sense when played over her voice, she truly has music in her heart
Yeah Harri, she can break your heart. I have 21 of Bonnie's solo albums and countless collaborations. She's on of the best slide guitarists in the world, a superb blues writer and singers. In a word THE BEST.
What a beautiful, remarkable and touching song! Absolutely loved it! Great suggestion and enjoyed your comments as well!
I’m balling my eyes out thinking about my own boys. God this song is emotional.
Bonnie is one of the greatest musicians in rock history
She is incredible
Bonnie is my ❤
I love her music more than words can express
What a great song . I have listened to it sooo many times , and still my eyes well up. What writing and what singing . Talent unmatched. To have this song at this time in her career, I’m very happy for her.
I love this song but I cry my eyes out when I hear it. So powerful and beautiful.
Bonnie is the best
What a talent she is.
Such an amazing gift to us, is 💝Ms Bonnie. 💝
And she's so beautiful, too.
When I first heard this song I was sitting in my chair crying. My wife asked me if I was okay. Took me a long time to tell her. This soulful song reaches into and won't let go
More from this wonderful artist, please -
Same here, Harri. Did not see it coming. Tearing up here. Wonder who is on organ? Wonderful. Thanks to you both.
Glenn Patscha on organ

Halfway through I thought "This sounds like a John Prine song." Go figure. 🙂
Name of the song is, Just Like That. Good tune.
Bonnie Raitt 💕💕💕
Something to talk about old soul.❤
"I CAN'T MAKE YOU LOVE ME" by Bonnie Raitt...beuatifully sung
Never heard this one! What a beautiful song! Thank you for posting ❤❤

Such a beautiful song from a beautiful soul. She's a treasure.
Truly amazing song and performance!

Seen Bonnie 5 times. I am still waiting to be disappointed. At 5.40 and onwards you can feel the pain in the voice, brilliant.

Nice reaction.

Bonnie is a natural to win over Beyonce, who can't measure up to Bonnie's ultra-ability. Unknown singer? How ridiculous.
a sign of the times changing-meaningful trumps materialistic 2022
Sublime wasn't it. Thanks for the review, your reaction does you credit.
She traveled with John Prine and this song is influenced by him and his type of songwriting.
Try storm warning
